Though the situation was urgent, Zhou Huaian remained calm.
“Tian Lanxing, are you done over there?”
“I just got the people out. What’s wrong?”
“An accident happened right after you left. Members of the Stellar Track Faction found the safe house. They have a bunch of magical girls leading the charge, plus a special assault team. They’re launching a full assault.”
Tian Lanxing’s face changed color.
“Hold on, I’ll be right there!”
“We can hold out for maybe twenty more minutes. The first line of defense is already breached. I’m severely short-handed, and their firepower is overwhelming. You have to…”
Before he could finish, the communication signal cut off.
Tian Lanxing’s expression darkened.
They were asking for death. Those three dogs actually dared to touch her people!
To Tian Lanxing, the two most important people in her life were her deceased wife, Su Wanning, and her daughter, Gu Qianqian.
Qin Lan, standing closest to Tian Lanxing, also heard the call clearly.
She gritted her teeth, propped herself up on a rock, and struggled to stand straight.
“Leave the rescue to me. I have to go get the hard drive. Once I have the evidence, I’ll contact someone to release the truth. Otherwise, the public will definitely be fooled by the propaganda.”
Tian Lanxing looked at Qin Lan’s battered state and said anxiously, “You’re hurt so badly you can barely stand. Let me take you to a safe place first, and then…”
“It’ll be too late. By the time I heal, it’ll be ages from now. How would I have time to reveal the truth?” Qin Lan snapped angrily. “I haven’t kicked the bucket yet! You don’t need to worry about me!”
“Just drop me and Lu Zhiyi off at Central Park. Then you go save your people!”
Tian Lanxing looked at Qin Lan.
The expression on her face was one of absolute resolve, as if she’d rather die than back down even a single step.
That was her pride, her obsession to make up for what she owed Su Wanning, willing to give everything.
“Can you really hold up?” Tian Lanxing’s voice tightened.
“Don’t worry, old partner.” Qinlan forced a smile through the pain. “Ah… today, for Wanning’s sake, I have to make those bastards pay. This old lady’s life is tough. Even the King of Hell wouldn’t dare take me.”
“Alright.” Tian Lanxing wrapped an arm around both Qin Lan and Lu Zhiyi’s waists. “Hold tight!”
The next moment, she held nothing back.
The terrifying power of a Star God-level released itself completely!
“Boom!!”
A silver-white streak of light shot straight into the sky!
As it broke the sound barrier, a sonic boom exploded over the island.
Twenty Mach. That was Tian Lanxing’s limit speed while diverting a large portion of her star energy to protect the two ordinary people from being torn apart.
The ocean below blurred into patches of color.
From the underwater prison six hundred meters below sea level to Central Park in Linhai City, a distance that would take six hours by plane, Tian Lanxing’s extreme burst compressed it to fifteen minutes.
Central Park, Linhai City.
It was afternoon, and many citizens were strolling in the park.
Suddenly, a deafening roar came from the high sky.
Before anyone could react, a dazzling blue light descended and landed steadily by the artificial lake at the park’s center.
The light faded, and Tian Lanxing set Qin Lan and Lu Zhiyi down on the grass.
Lu Zhiyi pointed at a nearby metal box. “The distribution box is just ahead!”
Tian Lanxing glanced at the box, then worriedly at Qin Lan’s pale face.
“I…”
“Just go!” Qin Lan shoved Tian Lanxing hard. “I don’t need your concern. Just getting something, I can handle it!”
Tian Lanxing said no more.
“Wait for me.”
With those two words, the silver-blue streak shot up again, speeding straight toward the safe house in the suburbs.
Midair, Tian Lanxing’s gaze was cold enough to freeze blood.
The wind carried the smell of gunpowder.
The ground outside the suburban underground bunker was a mess.
Six magical girls sat slumped among the rubble. Blood stained the corners of their mouths. Their magical outfits, worn from the high-intensity battle, had shattered and dissolved into specks of light.
Several Stellar Track Inspectors had their hands cuffed behind their backs with magic-suppression shackles.
Magic-suppression shackles were graded to deal with different levels of magical girls. The higher the grade, the harder to manufacture. Also, high-level magical girls could break free from the shackles on their own. So when dealing with them, the inspectors would first drain their star energy completely, then use the shackles to prevent them from gathering star energy slowly to transform again.
“Let me go! You bastards!”
“Stellar Track dogs!”
The girls gritted their teeth, glaring hatefully at the inspectors.
If looks could kill, those inspectors would be chopped into pieces by now.
The lead inspector sneered, pulled out a notice stamped with headquarters’ official seal, and read it aloud.
“For defying the headquarters’ supreme order and suspected harboring of rebels, you are hereby stripped of your magical girl status!”
“Without permission from the Inspector Committee, you are forbidden to use your Heart Stone to transform for life. Anyone caught transforming secretly will be charged with a serious crime. In other words, from today onward, you are useless. Understood?”
The girls met his gaze with stubborn defiance. Not one bowed her head.
Nearby, beside an armored command vehicle.
The Stellar Track operation commander used the vehicle’s loudspeaker.
“Zhou Huaian! Stop hiding in there like a turtle!”
The commander’s voice carried the arrogance of a petty man who got his way.
“All your people have been captured! Come clean and hand over the Star Squad members! The higher-ups say if you cooperate nicely, they’ll spare your life!”
Soon, a curse blasted from the bunker’s speakers.
“Bah! Go to hell with your ‘spare my life’!” Zhou Huaian’s voice was resolute. “I’d rather be blown to ashes than hand anyone over to scum like you! If you’ve got the balls, come in over my dead body!”
The commander’s face instantly darkened, as if he’d swallowed a fly.
“Stubborn old fool.” He spat viciously.
A subordinate sidled up to him. “Sir, this old turtle doesn’t know what’s good for him. How about I take the men and charge in to grab them? It’s not like they have any fighting strength left.”
“Charge? Is that necessary?” The commander sneered. “How big can this broken bunker be? Just level the turtle shell! I don’t care if those inside live or die!”
He looked at the twelve magical girls behind him.
This was an elite squad specially dispatched by headquarters, all high-level combatants.
“Everyone, ready!” The commander shouted. “Gather your star energy. Raze this place to the ground!”
The twelve magical girls stepped forward in unison, raising their hands.
Various colors of star energy gathered and interwove in their palms, slowly expanding in the air into a sphere of star energy.
Inside the bunker.
Zhou Huaian slumped against the control console, unsure what to do.
The big screen showed the surveillance feed of the growing star energy sphere.
