Lin Xiaolu couldn’t help saying, “Sister Xingyan’s presence is amazing.”
“What do you know?” Gu Qianqian laughed. “When charging for love, you have to use all your strength.”
Time goes back three days.
Apartment living room.
Hua Mu’ai was playing a game with a controller, while Xia Xingyan watched seriously beside her.
“Captain,” the girl suddenly spoke.
Hua Mu’ai kept her eyes on the screen. “Spit it out. Can’t you see I’m in the middle of a crucial moment?”
“I want to participate in the performance too.”
The screen went gray. Hua Mu’ai’s character died.
She threw the controller to the floor and studied Xia Xingyan with her violet eyes.
“You?” Hua Mu’ai raised an eyebrow. “Going to be a mascot? I don’t recall you being able to sing.”
“Piano accompaniment,” Xia Xingyan said without changing expression.
“Accompaniment?” Hua Mu’ai narrowed her eyes suspiciously. “This is a live audience of fifty thousand, plus a live broadcast. How good are you? Don’t end up shaking from nerves and embarrassing yourself in front of tens of thousands.”
Xia Xingyan pondered for two seconds.
“At nine, first place in the Tchaikovsky International Youth Music Competition, piano category. At twelve, special prize in the Chopin International Youth Piano Competition, Group B. At fourteen, invited to perform a twenty-minute solo at the Golden Hall in Vienna.”
Her tone was as flat as if she were stating a few trivial matters.
The living room fell silent for a moment.
“You were hiding your skills deep, you little girl!” Hua Mu’ai’s mouth twitched.
“If you put this resume out there, you could directly become a teacher at a music conservatory!”
“So, is it okay?”
“Alright, alright, you’re amazing, your call.” Hua Mu’ai waved her hand and picked up the controller again. “It’s no big deal. I’ll just give Wang Kaiming a heads up later.”
Back to the concert venue.
Halfway through the piano prelude, a blue spotlight lit up on the left side of the stage.
Tian Lanxing slowly walked out of the beam of light.
Her silver-white hair flowed with a dazzling luster under the bright light, and her azure skirt swayed gently with her steps.
On the right, another golden spotlight lit up at the same time.
Chu Yuyao appeared from the light, holding a guitar.
The two met at the center of the stage.
Tian Lanxing turned her head, glanced at Chu Yuyao, nodded, and gave a thumbs up.
Chu Yuyao had been a bit nervous, but upon seeing the gesture, her fingers landed steadily on the strings.
The guitar’s strings cut into the coldness of the piano.
Tian Lanxing raised the microphone.
“Walking through the endless long night…”
The entire venue fell silent instantly.
This song, “Starlight Never Falls,” in its original version eleven years ago, was a battle hymn full of hope and strength. But at this moment, the first line Tian Lanxing sang carried a sense of vicissitude.
VIP viewing area.
Shen Tinglan’s eyes were filled with tears.
She had written the lyrics of this song, remembering even every punctuation mark clearly.
She had lain on the desk in her dorm, biting the pen cap in deep thought, writing the lyrics on manuscript paper. After she finished, Gu Qing took the guitar and composed the music bit by bit.
That was a song that belonged only to the two of them. It was the youth they had spent together, the proof of their love.
‘If only the other girl on stage were herself.’
She couldn’t cry, couldn’t show any flaw.
She quickly averted her gaze from the stage and swallowed her emotions back down.
The first verse ended.
Tian Lanxing took half a step back, yielding the brightest spot of the stage light to Chu Yuyao.
Chu Yuyao sang, “Starlight falls, flowers bloom in the mud…”
Her voice was completely different from Tian Lanxing’s, a clarity just breaking through the soil.
When Chu Yuyao sang “In the darkness, someone lit a lamp for me,” she couldn’t help but look back at Tian Lanxing.
Tian Lanxing was also looking at her, her eyes full of pride.
Her nose tingled, and Chu Yuyao poured her emotions into the song’s climax.
The chorus arrived. The piano rhythm quickened, the guitar strummed fiercely.
Tian Lanxing’s high notes were ethereal and clear, soaring into the sky. Chu Yuyao’s mid-range was solid and powerful, steadily supporting the foundation. It was the most perfect harmony.
The chorus ended. The stage lights went out.
Only a single white beam remained on the piano.
Tian Lanxing did Xia Xingyan a great favor. Next came her forty-second piano solo.
Beneath the veil, Xia Xingyan watched Tian Lanxing’s figure.
That was the person she loved most, who had saved her from despair.
But she was so dazzling, and so many people liked her. ‘Did she really have a chance?’
After these few concerts, the unease in Xia Xingyan’s heart had grown and spread, devouring her bit by bit.
‘She doubted whether she could truly attain love.’
Whenever this happened, Xia Xingyan’s heart ached.
‘She wanted to monopolize Tian Lanxing.’
‘If only Tian Lanxing belonged to her alone, with no one else coveting her, how great that would be.’
She increased the force under her hands, and the piano music became fierce and surging. Suppressed emotions flowed through her fingertips and buried into the keys.
As the final note fell like thunder, Xia Xingyan lifted her hands from the keys, her chest heaving.
Then the entire venue erupted in enthusiastic applause.
The lights came back on, and the song was about to end.
At that moment, Tian Lanxing suddenly extended her left hand. Chu Yuyao was momentarily stunned, then gently handed her trembling fingertips over. Their fingers intertwined as they sang together, “Tears stream down cheeks, turning into stars…”
“Sing together!” Tian Lanxing pointed the microphone to the audience.
Fifty thousand people, fifty thousand voices, converged from all corners of the stands to the center of the stage.
Each one was a witness to growth…
Lin Xiaolu and Gu Qianqian waved glow sticks, their voices cracking from shouting.
Even the usually cold and tough Qin Lan’s eyes reddened.
Shen Tinglan closed her eyes and hummed softly along with the melody.
“Face every challenge with a smile, because faith is tougher than magic…”
On stage, the piano grew more impassioned, the emotions pushed to the highest point.
Tian Lanxing and Chu Yuyao raised their intertwined hands.
“No matter how far, no matter how hard…”
“Starlight never falls!”
As the last note ended, cheers, screams, and applause drowned the sports center.
“With Tian Lanxing singing together, the concert officially concludes here.”
From the front rows of the audience, a unified shout suddenly erupted.
“Tian Lanxing, I love you!”
“Tian Lanxing, I love you!”
…
The confessions came wave after wave, unstoppable.
Tian Lanxing stood on stage, her originally cool expression breaking apart instantly. Not just her face, but even her neck turned a shade of pink.
‘Why are these guys shouting so loudly? Are they crazy?’
Beside her, Chu Yuyao covered her mouth in admiration.
‘Lady Tian Lanxing’s shy look is really adorable!’
After a round of thanks, Tian Lanxing ran to the backstage as if fleeing, and Wang Kaiming immediately followed.
“Lady Tian Lanxing, this is absolutely a miracle! Another record broken! The ratings and online viewership have directly broken the historical record for talent shows! As for our future cooperation, name your appearance fee whatever you like!”
“Wang Kaiming,” Tian Lanxing said impatiently, “My contract with you has expired. From today on, stop bothering me with this nonsense. Understood?”
