The following morning, Roton Farrien awoke from his slumber, utterly content. Sunlight pierced through the gaps in the curtains, casting bright splotches across the opulent carpet.

The embers in the fireplace still glowed with a residual warmth, rendering the entire room cozy and inviting.

Master Maas’s promise formed the bedrock of his ambitious future plans.

He had even begun to calculate his next moves: once his troublesome niece was out of the way, he would start with that shortsighted little merchant guild in Leao City.

Just then, a hurried knocking at the door fractured his thoughts.

“Master, Master Maas has arrived!”

The servant’s announcement from beyond the door carried a hint of panic.

Roton bolted upright from his bed.

‘Master Maas?’

‘Why has he come so suddenly, and so early?’

‘Has something happened?’

A flicker of doubt crossed his mind, yet he swiftly dressed, daring not to show the slightest delay.

He hurried to the reception hall, where Master Maas stood pacing agitatedly, utterly devoid of the composure and reserve he had displayed at yesterday’s banquet.

“Mister Roton.”

Maas cut him off directly, getting straight to the point.

“I require your assistance. In a few days, I am to meet someone very, very important.”

Roton froze.

“This person’s significance to me far surpasses anything you could imagine.”

Maas paced back and forth across the drawing-room, completely oblivious to his own uncharacteristic agitation.

“I must greet her with the utmost decorum. Therefore, I need a completely new set of clothes – not robes, but proper civilian attire – and a suitable gift. It cannot be vulgar; it must convey my profound respect!”

‘An important person?’

Roton’s mind raced. ‘For a Five-Ring Mage from the Royal Capital to be so flustered, even using the word “respect,” the identity of this individual must be beyond imagination.

Could it be some great noble from the Royal Capital? Or an even higher-ranking Archmage?’

“Of course, Master, it would be my honor.”

Roton immediately adopted a respectful demeanor.

“Might I inquire which esteemed dignitary is gracing our Leao City with their presence? It would allow me to make appropriate preparations, lest I inadvertently offend such a noble individual.”

Maas halted his pacing and cast a dismissive glance at him.

“You have no need to know.”

His reply was simple, direct, and imbued with utter arrogance.

“Her identity is not for you to question. You only need to know that she is a lady, a… truly great lady. Do not allow your family to appear before her; that would be an unforgivable offense.”

Roton’s heart sank. He felt diminished, yet dared not betray a hint of it on his face. He could only suppress his curiosity and resentment deep within his heart.

‘A great lady?’

Lia’s image inexplicably flickered through his mind, only to be instantly dismissed by himself. ‘A mere girl, barely an adult, even if studying under Master Klein, could never warrant such an appraisal from Master Maas.’

“Yes, I understand.”

Roton bowed immediately.

“I shall escort you to the finest tailor and jeweler in the city.”

“Not jewelry!”

Maas immediately refused.

“Vulgar gold and jewels would only tarnish her. The gift must be extraordinary, something that embodies wisdom and intellect!”

Roton grew even more bewildered, yet he dared not press for details, merely offering a string of affirmations.

***

For an entire afternoon, Roton accompanied the black-eyed Five-Ring Mage, navigating the most exclusive commercial district of Leao City.

At the city’s most renowned tailor, Maas scoffed at the opulent garments adorned with gold thread and embroidered with gems.

He ultimately selected a set of deep blue robes, crafted from exquisite materials yet remarkably simple and understated in design.

Outwardly, the attire appeared unassuming, but its subtle details revealed extraordinary craftsmanship.

The process of choosing a gift proved even more arduous.

Roton suggested a magical brooch from the city’s largest mercantile house, rumored to have been unearthed from ancient ruins. It shimmered with a faint magical luminescence and was worth a king’s ransom.

“Utterly vulgar!” Maas declared, not even sparing it a glance.

Roton then proposed a bottle of the Water of Life, brewed by a master vintner and reputed to bestow longevity.

“She has no need for such things!” Maas retorted, clearly exasperated.

Roton racked his brain, presenting virtually every valuable treasure Leao City had to offer, only for each to be mercilessly rejected by Maas.

Fine beads of sweat began to prickle the merchant’s brow.

He simply could not fathom what kind of woman would lead a Five-Ring Mage to consider gold and jewels a defilement in her presence.

Finally, tucked away in a corner of a secluded antique shop, Maas discovered a particular set of items. It was a set of pen holders crafted from deep-sea sunken wood, with nibs forged from an unknown silver metal.

Alongside them sat an inkwell polished from a single block of obsidian. The entire set appeared ancient and elegant, devoid of any magical fluctuations, yet imbued with a profound sense of history.

“This is it,” Maas declared, picking up the writing instruments, a look of profound satisfaction gracing his features.

Roton gazed at the expensive yet seemingly unremarkable tools, his bewilderment reaching its peak. He found himself utterly unable to comprehend the mage’s reasoning.

Having completed his purchases, Maas departed in haste, even declining Roton’s invitation to dinner.

***

Upon returning to his estate, Maas immediately instructed his servants to press the newly acquired garments and to package the writing instruments in an exquisite gift box.

Only after all this was done did he finally find time to activate his magical communication device once more.

With a slight tremor, he sent a query to Horace, meticulously detailing the attire and gift he had prepared, seeking his teacher’s judgment on their suitability.

Soon, Horace’s magical letter materialized once more.

[You actually showed some sense! That writing set is good; she should like it. The clothes are acceptable too. Just don’t wear your flashy robes; you’d look like a strutting peacock!]

[I’ve already inquired for you, saving you from standing around like a headless chicken at the city gates! Klein says she’s arranged her own carriage.

Remember, the carriage is entirely black, adorned with silver magical patterns—not some gaudy country contraption!

She should arrive at the Birchwood Inn, thirty miles outside Leao City, approximately three days from now, in the afternoon.]

The contents of the letter finally settled Maas’s anxious heart. He carefully read every word, committing the carriage’s appearance and arrival time firmly to memory.

‘Three days.’

‘Just three more days.’

Maas paced restlessly about his room, a tumultuous blend of anticipation and anxiety rendering him unable to settle.

Impatiently, he donned his newly purchased deep blue robes and repeatedly practiced his opening remarks for meeting his idol before the full-length mirror.

“Great Miss Lia, I am Maas, Horace’s student—no, that’s too fawning.”

“Esteemed Lia, I am Maas, long have I admired your profound achievements in calculus and electromagnetism… no, too formal.”

“Hello, I’m Maas.” No! Too casual!

The Five-Ring Mage, so highly revered in Leao City, now resembled nothing so much as a flustered young apprentice.
