Join the ServerIn the early morning of the Royal Capital, the air was still a little damp.
Klein stood before the heavy oak door of “The Laurel Branch.”
He glanced at the black crystal card in his hand, on which faint golden patterns flowed.
This was the highest-level token for The Laurel Branch; the last time he had come with Lia, he didn’t have this.
He pushed the door and went inside.
There were few people in the shop, only a female clerk in uniform tidying up the counter.
Seeing someone enter, she habitually put on a professional smile, but after seeing the black card in Klein’s hand, her smile instantly became more sincere and respectful.
“Sir, this way, please.”
The female clerk stepped aside to lead the way, guiding Klein directly past the fancy display cabinets in the main hall, through a corridor laid with a long-pile carpet, and into a spacious VIP room.
The room was very quiet, with soundproofing arrays on the walls.
“I’m here for a custom order.”
Klein stood in the center of the room. “You should have the measurements of the girl from last time on file.”
“Yes, the young lady with the very beautiful hair.”
The clerk immediately retrieved a record from the magical archive behind the counter. “But… are the previous measurements still suitable?”
Klein fell silent for a moment.
He thought of how Lia looked now.
That body, reshaped by magic, and the feel of it when she leaned against him.
“Change them.”
Klein recited a string of numbers.
Shoulder width, waist, bust, hips.
Every number was precise to the millimeter.
The female clerk held a quill, and her recording hand trembled slightly. She couldn’t help but glance up at Klein.
This level of precision could usually only be mastered by the most intimate of tailors or… the most intimate of lovers.
“Got it?”
Klein’s voice betrayed no emotion.
“Got it, sir.”
The clerk lowered her head, hiding the gossip in her eyes. “May I ask what style you require this time?”
“I need a few sets for daily wear, nothing too elaborate.”
Klein paused. “And one… special set.”
The female clerk understood immediately and turned to a display cabinet of special materials, the kind that only true mages could wear.
The female clerk understood immediately, turning to open a magical projection screen that took up almost the entire wall.
All sorts of styles began to scroll across the screen.
“This set is ‘Morning Dew,’ made from the finest cloud-spun cotton. It’s extremely breathable and comes with a three-layer thermostatic array.”
“This set is ‘Night Rose,’ with a dark-patterned design, low-key and luxurious. There are minor protective runes on the collar.”
Klein looked at the design sketches.
His gaze lingered for two seconds on a set of dark gray, everyday mage robes.
“The cut is sharp, and the cinched waist is just right. It allows for easy movement while also outlining the figure.”
“This one,” he pointed.
“Very well.” The clerk noted it down. “There is also this light blue dress, which shares the same design philosophy. It’s very suitable for occasions like the academy or the laboratory.”
“I’ll take them all.”
“And for the special set…” The clerk brought up another set of images.
This time, the styles were clearly much bolder. Silk, lace, semi-transparent chiffon.
Klein’s gaze swept over the pictures.
He couldn’t stop his mind from picturing Lia wearing these clothes.
His Adam’s apple bobbed up and down.
“This one.” His finger landed on a black evening gown.
“It has an open-back design, a fishtail hem, and the material is shadow-flow chiffon, which shimmers under the light.”
“You have excellent taste, sir,” the clerk praised. “This is our chief designer’s private collection piece, ‘Queen of the Night.’ It is the only one in the entire Royal Capital.”
“Wrap it up.”
“Of course. The three outfits will take about half an hour for size adjustments and enchanting. Please wait a moment.”
The female clerk withdrew.
Klein sat on the sofa, his fingers tapping lightly on the armrest.
Half an hour later.
Three boxes were placed before him.
Two were in exquisite blue hard-paper boxes, stamped with the silver foil logo of The Laurel Branch.
The other was a black velvet box, with no markings on its surface, but it had a deep, profound texture.
Klein stood up and waved his hand.
He walked out of The Laurel Branch’s doors, and the sunlight outside was just right.
***
On the top floor of the mage tower.
Lia was sitting cross-legged on the carpet, wearing robes Adèle had bought, though they looked a bit big.
She held a book on high-circle magic structures, but her mind was clearly not on it.
Too big.
Her downward gaze was suddenly partially blocked, which she found a little hard to get used to.
Suddenly, the door was pushed open.
Klein walked in.
“Klein.” Lia closed her book.
Klein walked up to her, and with a flip of his hand, two blue boxes appeared on the table.
“Try them.”
Lia’s eyes lit up when she saw the same boxes as last time.
Without any ceremony, she immediately scooped up the boxes and rushed back to her room.
Not long after, the door to Lia’s room opened.
Lia first came out wearing the dark gray everyday mage robes.
The cinched waist perfectly hugged her current curves, and the hem length was just right, ending at her calves and revealing her slender ankles.
The slightly sloppy feeling from her ill-fitting clothes was completely gone.
She did a little twirl.
“It’s a perfect fit.” Lia looked down at the cuffs. “How did you know my size?”
Klein sat in a chair, holding a teacup, and said nothing.
His gaze rested on Lia.
From the collarbone at her neckline, to the cinch at her waist, and down to the line of her legs beneath the hem.
The sense of restrained abstinence created by the clothing was, paradoxically, more captivating than direct exposure.
“I estimated.” Klein took a sip of tea.
“Well, you’re a really good estimator.”
Lia didn’t think much of it and ran back to change into the second set.
This time it was the light blue dress.
Compared to the competence of the gray, this set had a touch more gentleness.
As Lia walked out, she happened to run into Adèle coming upstairs with snacks.
“Wow!” Adèle nearly dropped the tray in her hands. “You look absolutely stunning!”
She placed the tray on the table and circled Lia several times.
“Lia, you look just like a noble lady now, no—you have more grace than any of them!”
Adèle reached out to touch the fabric of the dress. “This material, this workmanship… the mentor must have really splurged.”
As Adèle spoke, she secretly shot meaningful glances back and forth between Klein and Lia.
“Mentor, when did you go shopping? You didn’t even ask me to come along for advice.”
“It was on the way.” Klein put down his teacup.
“You managed to find such a perfect fit just ‘on the way’?”
Adèle winked. “The sizing is just too spot-on.”
Lia, who was adjusting the hem of her dress, paused at her words.
She looked up at Klein.
Klein’s expression was as normal as ever, steady as a mountain.
“Since the clothes fit.”
Klein stood up. “Let’s go to the Association together in a couple of days.”
“What for?” Lia ask.
“To get you certified as a Seventh Circle,” Klein looked at her. “Your magic fluctuations have stabilized. It’s time to elevate your status, to prevent any disrespectful old fools from making an issue of it.”
“A Seventh Circle Mage.”
In the Magic Association, that was already considered a high-level combatant.
Once certified, Lia would no longer be an apprentice needing her mentor’s protection, but a true Archmage.
Lia thought for a moment.
“Alright.”
Getting certified was a good idea; at least the situations where just anyone could come and question her would become much rarer.
“Then rest well for the next two days and get used to your current magic.”
After speaking, Klein turned and walked toward his laboratory.
Inside his spatial ring, a black velvet box lay quietly in a corner.
He hadn’t taken it out.
It wasn’t yet time for that ‘Queen of the Night’.
At least, he would wait until it was just the two of them.
Klein leaned against the laboratory door, took a deep breath, and suppressed the restlessness in his heart.
“Seventh Circle…”
He murmured in a low voice.
After the certification was over, some things should also be put on the agenda.
