Join the ServerWhile the Kingdom of Heinrich was immersed in the dramatic changes to public life brought by electrification, the Iron Eagle Empire to the north remained shrouded in the shadow of ice, snow, and steel.
In an underground base buried hundreds of meters beneath the frozen tundra, the air was filled with the smell of metal, ozone, and a faint hint of blood.
Konrad von Richter stood before a massive ring-shaped device, expressionlessly flipping through the report in his hand.
Behind him, several engineers in white research coats didn’t dare to breathe.
“Test subject number seven, after being injected with a standard frequency ‘psycho-interference field,’ its mental field was successfully stabilized at the preset critical value, lasting for three minutes.”
“However, its brain activity has completely ceased, and consciousness signals have completely dissipated. According to the determination criteria, the experiment is a failure.”
“Test subject number eight, an attempt was made to inject a modulated high-frequency electromagnetic wave to guide its mental power to produce a specific resonance.”
“Zero point three seconds after injection, the subject’s mental power instantly went rampant, energy overflowed the threshold, and its physical form underwent an irreversible chain disintegration. Failure.”
At the end of the report was a magic photograph.
On the photo, where the test subject should have been lying, there was only a pool of blurred flesh and shattered bones, fused together with the metal experimental platform.
“Reporting, sir…” a younger-looking researcher finally summoned the courage to speak, his voice trembling. “Should we… continue?”
His voice carried an uncontrollable tremor.
“This experiment of directly interfering with the sea of consciousness using a strong electromagnetic field is simply too risky. We still know nothing about the nature of mental power. It’s like trying to repair a clock with a battering ram.”
Konrad did not turn around.
His gaze pierced through the cold laboratory, past the nauseating failure reports, and finally landed on a huge map hanging on the wall.
It was a real-time updated magic map.
On the territory representing the Kingdom of Heinrich, tiny points of light were constantly being lit up.
Each point of light represented a town newly installed with “Ever-Bright Bulbs” or a fortress newly equipped with telegraph lines.
These points of light connected together, like a rapidly spreading spider web, enveloping the entire Kingdom of Heinrich.
“Risk?”
Konrad’s voice was as cold as the permafrost outside the base.
“When those nobles and merchants in Heinrich are enjoying the convenience of electric lamps and fans in their comfortable rooms, they will never know that Lia Farrien has opened a door for us to a terrifying domain.”
He picked up another document from the experimental platform.
It was the latest intelligence from the Royal Capital, a detailed analysis of Alistair’s telegraph system and the paper Lia had publicly published, On the Relay Amplification and Attenuation Compensation of Magitech Signals.
“Wired communication?”
A smile mixed with disdain and cruelty appeared on Konrad’s lips. “How ridiculously primitive.”
He tapped the report with his finger.
“They are still content with using wires to transmit simple ‘on’ and ‘off’ signals.”
“Like a group of primitives who have just learned to use stone tools, who have found a piece of iron ore that fell from the sky, but only want to grind it into a sharper ‘spearhead’ to hunt fat wild boars.”
His eyes became fanatical.
“They have no idea that the true value of this ‘iron ore’ is that it can be smelted, forged into swords, into armor, even into iron chariots that can split mountains and crack the earth.”
“Since the electromagnetic field can carry simple ‘on/off’ signals, then why can’t it carry more complex signals?”
He spun around, his sharp gaze sweeping over every researcher present.
“Like… thoughts?”
Everyone was intimidated by the crazed light in his eyes and subconsciously took a step back.
“What do you think we are doing here? Repeating those bloody and failed experiments?”
Konrad’s voice suddenly rose. “No! We are creating a miracle!”
He walked to the central control console of the ring-shaped device. On a crystal screen, the final data stream collected from test subject number eight was displayed.
Before the chaotic peak representing the collapse of mental power appeared, there was another extremely weak but identical frequency signal that had a fleeting resonance on another monitoring device connected to the brain of test subject number seven.
That resonance lasted for less than one-hundredth of a second.
So faint that it could almost be dismissed as an instrument error.
But Konrad had captured it.
“Do you see?” he pointed to the tiny spike, as if displaying a priceless treasure. “The theory is confirmed!”
“Mental power is, in essence, also a field. It can be modulated, amplified, and even transmitted through specific electromagnetic waves!”
“The death of test subject number eight was not a failure! He was the fuel that lit the path ahead for us!”
His inflammatory words sent a chill down the spines of the researchers present.
They looked at Konrad as if at a demon returned from hell.
“Bring in test subject number nine,” Konrad ignored everyone’s reaction and coldly issued the command.
“Increase the power of the core matrix and adjust the frequency to the band that just produced the resonance.”
“I will make mental power into a ‘radio wave’ that can be transmitted freely in the sky!”
“I will make my will, like a divine punishment, descend upon every corner of the Empire! I will make all soldiers act in unison under my thoughts! I will make all enemies suffer a mental collapse amidst the invisible whispers!”
He spread his arms, as if embracing a great future.
“Those so-called electrification applications in the Kingdom of Heinrich are just toys played with by an infant who has just learned to walk.”
“And we,” his voice was filled with an indisputable authority, “will fly directly.”
No one dared to object.
In the Iron Eagle Empire, Konrad’s will was the absolute law.
A new test subject was pushed into the laboratory.
He was a noble sentenced to death for treason, his eyes filled with fear and despair.
He was strapped to a cold metal platform, and a helmet covered in runes and wires was placed on his head.
Konrad personally walked to the control console. His fingers swiped quickly across the crystal screen, setting the new experimental parameters.
“Let’s begin,” he said softly.
The ring-shaped device once again emitted a low hum.
An invisible electromagnetic storm once again swept through this laboratory, located deep underground.
A new era, baptized in blood and fire, had quietly begun in a completely different manner.
