After a moment of hesitation, Eve decided to down the healing potion.
Alice, after all, would never intentionally harm her.
“Gulp, gulp, gulp…”
Having finished the unsightly green potion, it wasn’t bitter medicine as she had anticipated. Instead, it tasted rather sweet.
Eve frowned slightly, smacking her lips as she savored the lingering taste.
‘Was this potion mixed with milk?’ she wondered. ‘Why did it have such a distinct milky aroma?’
‘Or perhaps this was simply how healing potions tasted in this otherworld, and she was merely prejudiced?’
The potion’s effects manifested swiftly. Her previously dislocated lumbar bones automatically healed, and a layer of holy light descended from above, enveloping Eve.
In an instant, Eve began to glow brilliantly, resembling a small golden statue.
The system’s prompt appeared precisely at this moment.
[You have consumed High-Quality Holy Water, gaining the Instant Healing buff (duration 30 seconds), Resistance Boost buff (duration 15 minutes), and Holy Light Protection buff (duration 15 minutes).]
[Note: As your race is Undead, the actual effectiveness of any divine-type item will be reduced to half of its original effect.]
Eve: …
Upon seeing the system’s prompt, Eve silently lowered her head, looking at the potion bottle in her hand.
The liquid remaining in the bottle, which should have been green, now shimmered with a crystal-clear milky white under the holy light.
Eve took a deep breath, then looked at Alice and asked,
“…Alice, is this truly a healing potion you gave me?”
Alice slightly turned her head, avoiding Eve’s gaze. A faint blush had, at some point, crept onto her lovely face. “Yes, it’s definitely real…”
‘If it’s real, then why are you blushing so fiercely?!’
Eve’s hand, still clutching the potion, trembled slightly.
Alice’s changing expression, coupled with the word ‘Holy Water’ in the system prompt and the mysterious milky aroma from earlier, stirred a troubling thought in Eve’s mind.
‘Something was wrong. Terribly wrong!’
‘This item definitely had a significant origin!’
Alice noticed Eve was still staring at her. That ‘confess, I’ve seen through everything’ gaze made her thoroughly uncomfortable, and she knew she couldn’t hide it any longer.
Finally unable to hold back, Alice said, her face flushed crimson, “Alright, alright, I’ll confess…”
She then twirled a strand of golden hair that fell beside her ear with her finger, and somewhat bashfully continued, “This potion isn’t actually the product of a legitimate alchemist. Instead, I made it myself on a whim during my free time, following the steps from an alchemy manual.”
“But I don’t know why, even though I followed the exact same steps as in the book, the potion I made turned out a completely different color from the one in the manual. However, I drank one bottle myself, and it definitely had good healing effects.”
“I figured, since it could heal anyway, the healing potion’s creation should be considered a success. So, I just used a simple light magic spell to slightly alter the potion’s color, making it look more like an ordinary healing potion on the outside. I’ve been keeping it close to me ever since.”
After listening to Alice’s explanation, Eve felt an inexplicable sense of regret. “So that’s how it is…”
‘No, what in the world am I regretting?!’
Well, Eve thought her brain must have been stained yellow by the holy light suddenly erupting from her body.
But then Eve came to her senses. Seeing the holy light vigorously emanating from her body, she finally noticed the crucial point.
She couldn’t help but ask, a shiver running down her spine, “What’s with this holy light on me? I’m an undead! Alice, I’m not going to be purified by the holy light, am I…?”
Alice, however, said confidently, “Eve-chan, don’t worry. Because the healing potion’s creation process uses entirely alchemical methods, alchemical products are effective on all creatures. So, even if an undead drinks it, there won’t be any problems.”
After speaking, she looked at the holy light on Eve again.
After a brief observation, she explained, “As for this, it should just be a simple protective effect. It can be used to block attacks and negative effects. The holy light from this protective effect won’t cause you any harm.”
After hearing Alice’s explanation, Eve finally understood.
‘Although this thing had ‘holy light’ in its name, it actually didn’t carry any holy light-related abilities. In essence, it was just a temporary shield.’
‘However, even so…’
“An undead wandering around, covered in holy light, seems a bit too preposterous, no matter how you look at it.”
Hearing this, Alice covered her mouth and chuckled softly. “Pfft~ I actually think it’s fine. Perhaps one day in the future, Eve-chan truly will be able to coexist with holy light.”
This sounded like a jest, yet Alice wasn’t actually joking. A genuine seriousness lay hidden deep within her smiling, beautiful eyes.
Eve shivered all over, thinking Alice had suddenly changed her mind and was preparing to bestow a proper holy light upon her.
Frightened, she quickly opened the coffin and squeezed inside.
With the coffin lid resting on her head, only a narrow slit remained. Through it, her ruby-like eyes peered out, warily watching Alice. “No, no, I don’t want to turn into ashes…”
Seeing Eve in this state, Alice found her both adorable and amusing. “Eve-chan, don’t be scared. I wasn’t planning on purifying you with holy light.”
“Besides, even if I wanted to attack you, Eve-chan, hiding in a coffin wouldn’t do much good.”
Eve, however, poked her head out from the coffin. She said with considerable confidence, “You can’t be sure about that. Perhaps even your strongest magic wouldn’t be able to harm me inside this coffin, Alice.”
Alice simply smiled without a word.
Eve saw Alice’s expression and knew that she definitely didn’t believe her. However, she didn’t ask Alice to try.
After all, she hadn’t fully grasped the beginner village’s defense mechanisms.
If Alice were to launch an attack, and it triggered the defense mechanism, causing her to get hurt or die, Eve would feel incredibly guilty.
Alice harbored the same thoughts.
If Eve wanted her to attack the coffin, Alice would absolutely refuse.
After all, she was a Rank 10 Archmage. A common wooden coffin like this probably couldn’t even withstand a casual Rank 2 spell from her.
If she didn’t hold back in time, or if Eve was even slightly grazed by the holy light, her Eve-chan would be completely gone.
‘Sigh, even after becoming an undead, Eve-chan is still the same as before. Truly adorably foolish~’
Alice couldn’t help but murmur to herself.
However, after all this commotion, Alice finally couldn’t suppress a yawn that rose instinctively.
Ever since becoming the Saintess, Alice’s daily schedule was essentially fixed.
The various tasks accumulated on her were often very heavy, and she frequently had to ‘work overtime’ in the evenings.
Normally, Alice would apply a buff called [Concentration] to keep herself refreshed.
But this time, she was out on vacation. How could she possibly apply a Concentration buff in advance? This was why she was getting tired so quickly today.
Fortunately, she had met Eve. With her companionship, the joy of their reunion had overwhelmed her drowsiness, keeping Alice invigorated.
However, now that drowsiness was returning, protesting against her body.
