As the sun climbed and the moon descended, a new and beautiful day arrived.
Yulim Wilivia woke up early as usual.
She had still suffered from nightmares last night.
After all, this was a curse left by a deity, not something that could be dispelled with a mere lullaby. Yet, Anna’s method hadn’t been entirely useless; last night had indeed been one of Yulim Wilivia’s more peaceful sleeps.
Quietly, she released Anna’s hand and rose, tidying her sleeping bag.
‘Anna is still asleep,’ she thought. ‘And Luosha… the coffin shows no signs…’
Yulim Wilivia’s thoughts abruptly froze.
‘Oh no,’ she realized. ‘I fell asleep straight away last night and forgot to wake up midway to check on Luosha in the coffin!’
Controlling her footsteps to be as light as possible, Yulim Wilivia hurried to the coffin and pressed her ear against its lid.
An elf’s pointed ears weren’t merely for aesthetics; they granted them superior hearing compared to humans.
But…
She heard nothing! Absolutely nothing!
Not a single sound emanated from within the coffin!
Even if someone were asleep, it was impossible for there to be no sound of breathing at all!
A chill swept through Yulim Wilivia’s heart. She circled the entire coffin, inspecting it, but found no tiny vents for air to enter.
She collapsed onto the ground, a terrible premonition rising in her mind.
‘It’s over…’
‘There’s only one possibility for this situation…’
‘Luosha, she… she must have already…’
Thud—
The coffin lid suddenly flew open before Yulim Wilivia’s eyes.
A petite figure sat up from within the coffin, stretching languidly.
“Haaah~”
“Hm?”
“It’s Yulim Wilivia. Good morning, you’re up quite early.”
Noticing Yulim Wilivia’s stunned expression by the coffin, Eve Wells greeted her with a smile.
Only then did Yulim Wilivia belatedly stammer, “Ah… good morn…”
Eve Wells climbed out of the coffin, glancing at Anna, who was still sweetly nestled in her sleeping bag. She lowered her voice as she asked, “Anna isn’t awake yet?”
Yulim Wilivia nodded.
To be honest, she was still somewhat bewildered.
‘Luosha’s coffin doesn’t look particularly thick, so why couldn’t I hear anything from inside just now?’
Yulim Wilivia reached into her hood and touched her own ears.
‘Had her hearing deteriorated?’
If Eve Wells had known Yulim Wilivia’s thoughts, she would have undoubtedly rolled on the ground laughing.
As an undead, not only did she not breathe, but she had no heartbeat. Wennya, who slept with her, had also become a Holy Spirit, similarly lacking these abilities.
It would have been truly supernatural if Yulim Wilivia had heard any sounds of them ‘sleeping’.
Eve Wells had chosen to sleep in her coffin in front of Anna and Yulim Wilivia last night because she felt the two girls had been completely open with her, sharing various secrets and information. In turn, Eve Wells was willing to be more transparent with them.
For instance, the coffin she carried daily – many who saw it likely assumed it contained a corpse.
But in reality, it was simply her and Wennya’s cozy little home.
Eve Wells figured that even if Anna and Yulim Wilivia discovered this secret, it wouldn’t matter.
‘After all, I’m Luosha now, not Eve Wells.’
‘If Wennya is discovered, it’s fine too; I’ll just say she’s my angel.’
Holy practitioners, after all, had a branch of their profession that involved summoning angels to battle.
‘Though Wennya lacked wings, did that mean she couldn’t fly? Were wings truly such an inconvenient necessity?’
‘Wennya could float; even near-ground levitation counted as flight!’
‘Yes, a perfect logical loop.’
Ignoring Yulim Wilivia, Eve Wells nimbly retrieved the coffin lid that had flown off and hoisted it back.
Because Yulim Wilivia had been sitting on the ground earlier, she hadn’t seen Wennya inside the coffin. She also had no intention of prying into Eve Wells’s coffin and, after Eve Wells left, rose to prepare breakfast.
After Yulim Wilivia departed, a tiny, adorable strand of hair cautiously peeked out from the edge of the coffin.
The little strand of hair twitched, seemingly observing its surroundings with caution. Once it sensed no one was paying attention, half a small head emerged, blinking a pair of golden eyes at the approaching Eve Wells.
“Miss Eve!” Wennya whispered, her voice barely audible.
Wennya waved at Eve Wells with considerable excitement. “Yulim Wilivia didn’t notice Wennya at all! Isn’t Wennya amazing!”
“Yes, yes, yes~ Our Wennya is the best at hide-and-seek~”
Eve Wells indulgently reached out and ruffled the little maid Wennya’s head. Watching the other girl’s blissful expression, she felt her own heart warmed once more.
Since Yulim Wilivia hadn’t noticed, Eve Wells decided to let it be. After a brief, affectionate interaction with Wennya, she carefully resealed the coffin lid.
‘Regardless, risk prevention must always be thorough.’
Once Eve Wells had hoisted the coffin back onto her shoulders, she went to find Yulim Wilivia.
The breakfast Yulim Wilivia intended to prepare was quite simple.
Using materials found on the spot, she gathered fresh-looking tender grasses from the prairie. Adding leaves she had picked from the Elf Forest before leaving, which they hadn’t finished, she used water magic to clean them thoroughly before arranging them directly onto three parchment-lined plates.
Next, she retrieved a small piece of black bread from her backpack, which had been broken into crumbs and stored in a bag.
She carefully divided it into three portions, crumbling each into fine breadcrumbs to sprinkle over the greens. Finally, she took out a nearly empty bottle of jam and squeezed a small dollop into the very center of each plate.
Thus, a breakfast that could generously be called ‘light and nourishing’ – but was, in truth, utterly meager – came to life in Yulim Wilivia’s hands.
However, given the finished product’s surprisingly excellent presentation, resembling a refined and refreshing afternoon tea dessert, Eve Wells’s actual score was—
“One hundred points!”
Eve Wells gave Yulim Wilivia a thumbs-up. “Yulim Wilivia, you’re absolutely amazing! If you became a chef, you’d definitely be a royal-class one!”
Upon hearing such lavish praise, Yulim Wilivia’s cheeks flushed crimson, and wisps of white steam seemed to rise from her head. She then shook her head frantically.
Though Yulim Wilivia uttered no words, Eve Wells’s mind already conjured the image of a certain timid, lonely girl muttering, ‘Oyster, oyster, oyster…’
‘Girls who love to cook are just so adorable!’
‘I’m dying! So cute!’
Resisting the urge to give Yulim Wilivia a head pat, Eve Wells stood up. “Since breakfast is ready, I’ll go wake Anna. It’s getting late now anyway.”
‘If I were to pat this socially anxious girl’s head, she’d probably just shut down, wouldn’t she?’
Eve Wells thought mischievously.
Crouching beside Anna’s sleeping bag, Eve Wells reached out and poked the girl’s soft, plump cheek. “Anna? Anna? Wake up, the sun’s already high!”
The deeply sleeping Anna remained undisturbed.
Eve Wells frowned slightly, then leaned down, whispering into Anna’s ear as if sharing a secret. “Anna, if you don’t wake up soon, I’ll eat your breakfast~”
Anna still didn’t stir, even rolling over in her sleep.
Seeing this, Eve Wells fell silent.
Then, a progressively mischievous grin spread across her lips.
‘Anna, oh Anna.’
‘You refuse the toast, so you’ll drink the forfeit.’
Without further hesitation, Eve Wells extended her ‘wicked’ little hand…
And aimed for Anna’s armpit, which was currently facing away from her!
“Take this, Anna! Witness the ultimate secret technique, the infallible killer move I used during my student days to rouse my lazy, eight-AM-class-dodging roommates! Heheheh!”
