Chapter 118: A Promise Forgotten

Time and again, Eve selected several sets of pajamas for Fionn.

She also picked out a few beautiful dresses and other charming garments.

Just as Eve, feeling utterly satisfied, prepared to lead Fionn to the checkout counter, she noticed Fionn gazing longingly at a particular garment on a rack.

Eve leaned closer, discovering it was a hooded sweatshirt adorned with fluffy rabbit ears.

A sudden understanding dawned upon her: girls truly did adore cute clothes.

Reaching out, Eve ruffled Fionn’s hair from behind.

“If you like it,” she said, “go ahead and pick one out to buy.”

While Eve typically advocated for frugality, she was never stingy when it came to spending money.

After all, the one thing she currently had in abundance was wealth.

Fionn nodded, then carefully took down the rabbit-eared hoodie.

However, Eve couldn’t help but wonder if the size Fionn had chosen was a bit too small.

As Eve pondered this, Fionn turned around, holding the garment up against Eve’s own body.

“Mm-hmm! Luosha, you’d look absolutely adorable in this!”

‘So, *I* was the target customer?’

Seeing Eve’s astonished expression, Fionn shyly lowered her head, a faint blush creeping across her cheeks.

“Because Luosha has been picking out all my clothes,” she mumbled, “I wanted to pick something out for you too!”

“Could this outfit be added to my debt, then?”

“I… I’ll work hard to pay it all back!”

As she finished speaking, Fionn looked earnestly at Eve, her eyes shining with hopeful anticipation.

Eve found herself caught between laughter and tears.

What kind of situation was this?

Was it a case of “more debt, less worry” for Fionn?

Still, the girl’s thoughtful gesture of wanting to give back filled Eve with profound contentment.

With a dismissive wave of her hand, Eve declared,

“Alright, then! We’ll just buy it!”

Indeed, this was a major city. After all that shopping, the final bill at checkout amounted to nearly one gold coin.

As Eve placed the gold coin on the counter and watched the attendant take it, Fionn’s face beside her turned deathly pale.

The poor Demon Lord Lu, having never seen a gold coin in her entire life, was now witnessing one being spent for the first time—and on herself, no less.

The silver-haired girl’s eyes had glazed over, resembling mosquito coils, as she tremblingly counted on her fingers.

She calculated how long she would have to work to repay her entire debt if this gold coin was included.

“It feels like… even if I worked for Roly my whole life… I still wouldn’t be able to pay it all back…”

After Eve had stored all the bundled clothes into her wristband, she called out to Fionn, startling the silver-haired girl back to reality.

Leaving the women’s clothing store, they continued to stroll around the commercial street.

Since Eve possessed the wristband, there was no need to carry anything, making the actual shopping experience quite pleasant for her.

Along the way, whenever they encountered an interesting snack stall, Eve would buy two portions: one for Fionn and one for herself.

The two girls ate and browsed as they walked.

As their shopping excursion neared its end, Eve, who was enthusiastically devouring an ice cream, suddenly remembered a crucial detail, cold sweat beading on her forehead.

It seemed… she had previously promised a certain little maid that she would spend an entire day shopping and playing with her.

And at this very moment, the little maid was probably still…

The ice cream slipped from Eve’s hand and splattered onto the ground.

She instantly transformed into the distorted figure from the famous painting *The Scream*, stiffly turning her head to stare at the coffin on Fionn’s back.

‘She had made Wennya a third wheel for an entire afternoon!’

Eve, now an abstract blur of motion, twisted as she approached Fionn.

Fionn’s voice trembled: “Fionn… could you… temporarily return the coffin to me…?”

“Hm? Alright…” Though the silver-haired girl didn’t understand Eve’s intentions, she obediently unstrapped the coffin from her back.

She then asked, her voice laced with curiosity, “Luosha, why do you suddenly need the coffin?”

“Ugh… I need to begin my repentance…”

“Oh… ohh! I see! It’s the daily prayer that priests perform, right?”

“Exactly.”

After taking the coffin, Eve spoke earnestly to Fionn:

“Fionn, please stay here and don’t move. I’ll be right back.”

With that, she clutched the coffin and swiftly darted into a nearby alleyway.

****

‘ “Nia?” ‘

– “Hmm? Nia’s here, Miss Eve? What’s wrong?” –

The little maid’s puzzled voice emanated from within the coffin.

Hearing Nia, who didn’t sound jealous or angry, Eve found herself momentarily at a loss for words.

She repeatedly tried to explain her shopping trip with Fionn, but each attempt felt like it would only worsen the situation.

After much deliberation, Eve could only make a solemn vow:

– “Nia, next time, I absolutely promise to go shopping with you, and only you, and we’ll have a blast all day long!” –

Nia’s lively voice responded from inside the coffin:

– “Mm-hmm! Nia is super, super excited for that day!” –

Eve paused, then couldn’t help but ask:

– “You’re not worried I’ll break my promise?” –

– “Of course not! Nia always trusts Miss Eve’s promises! They’ll definitely come true!” –

The little maid’s matter-of-fact tone plunged Eve into silence.

Although she hadn’t been in this world for long, she had already broken her promises twice.

She had promised Alice she would wait three years for her in Yarokan City, yet she had run away.

She had promised Yulim Wilivia to conceal her whereabouts, but in the end, she had told Anna.

Deep down, Eve didn’t truly believe herself to be a trustworthy person.

At the same time, she felt there was no real need to keep her word.

‘After all, this was merely a game, and most of its inhabitants, besides herself, were nothing more than…’

‘Right?’

‘System?’

[?]

Seeing the system’s prompt box appear, Eve felt a wave of relief wash over her.

The system didn’t need to specifically answer anything; its mere presence, confirming its existence, was enough to provide Eve with the answer she sought.

Eve’s lips twisted into what was barely a smile as she hoisted the coffin onto her back.

“Yes, your Miss Eve will keep her promises,” she affirmed.

‘Since it’s just a game, what does it matter if I’m a little willful, a little unrestrained?’

She numbed herself with these thoughts.

She emerged from the alley.

Catching sight of Fionn, who still stood in place, waiting for her without having moved an inch, a flicker of dimness crossed Eve’s eyes.

‘Although… it seemed best not to make promises to others so casually in the future.’

Composing herself, Eve walked towards Fionn.

“I’m back,” she said. “Sorry to keep you waiting, Fionn.”

“No, no, I haven’t been waiting long at all.”

Fionn waved her hands dismissively, then stepped closer, proactively taking the coffin from Eve’s arms and strapping it onto her own back.

She then asked, “Luosha, are we going anywhere else now?”

After a moment’s thought, Eve shook her head.

“No, we’re not,” she replied. “We’ve pretty much bought everything we needed for this trip. It’s time to take you back and show you where we’ll be staying tonight.”

“Mm-hmm!”

Seeing the girl’s cheerful demeanor, Eve couldn’t help but chuckle.

“But Fionn, don’t get your hopes up too high,” she warned. “Our accommodations probably aren’t as good as you imagine.”

Fionn, however, didn’t appear disappointed; instead, she responded with utmost seriousness:

“It’s alright! As long as there’s a place to sleep, I’m perfectly fine! Even if I have to sleep sprawled on a tree branch, it’s absolutely no problem for me!”

Eve: “????”

‘Sleep on a tree? Are you a sloth-turned-Demon Lord?’
