Chapter 120: The Weight of Immortality and Divine Fates

After a long moment, Eve finally regained her composure. “So, does the curse on you… affect your lifespan?”

Yulim shook her head. “The curse has already affected my lifespan…”

Just as Eve felt a sense of relief, Yulim’s next words made her heart clench once more.

Yulim continued, “Before I retrieved the Godslayer Sword… I also believed the curse would only make me lose myself in slaughter…”

“But in the Cursed Lands where the Godslayer Sword resides… I heard the lingering echoes of a deity…”

“In truth, immortality… is the cruelest curse the authority of Life and Breath bestowed upon the elven race…”

Eve paused, then grew confused. “Immortality is a curse?”

Yulim nodded.

“Is this truly a curse and not a blessing?

Is there something inherently wrong with eternal life?

Why call this curse cruel?

Many people desire immortality, yet find no path to it…”

Eve remained quite bewildered.

Yulim opened her mouth, intending to say more, but ultimately nothing escaped her lips. She cautiously averted her gaze to the sleeping Anna, changing the subject. “…Anna being sought out by the Goddess of Finality was no accident.”

Noticing Yulim’s clear intent to change the subject, Eve decided against pressing her earlier questions. As long as Yulim was alive and well, ensuring their shared drinking nights weren’t prematurely ended, Eve was satisfied. She then focused intently on Yulim’s subsequent words.

“Anna once told me… the Goddess of Finality sought to gain the support of the Sword Saint family through her… and then, with their cooperation, fully seize control of the divine authority of Freedom…”

“In exchange… she would lift the curse of Freedom from every member of Anna’s family…”

“However, Anna did not agree…”

“In fact, Anna has never agreed…”

“That’s why the Goddess of Finality frequently seeks her out…”

Eve nodded. The name Goddess of Finality hardly sounded like a benevolent deity. She likely represented the ultimate supervillain behind the scenes, an entity whose ultimate goal was the destruction of the world.

Such a being, growing even stronger after perfectly mastering her powers, would certainly not be good news for the entire world.

Though Anna could be rather clumsy, she certainly held strong principles when it came to the bigger picture!

At this point in their conversation, Eve suddenly grew curious. “Yulim, if I may interject with another question…”

“Aside from the Goddess of Light and the Goddess of Finality, how many other deities exist in the world?”

Eve had never specifically sought information on this topic. She only knew the Goddess of Light and the Goddess of Finality had made an appearance within her system.

She always had a feeling she might be the first to collect a complete ‘Divine Bestiary’ and become intimately familiar with every deity.

Yulim answered without much hesitation. “None… Currently, only those two deities remain on the continent.”

Eve was slightly stunned. “Only two? That’s it?”

Yulim nodded again. “Historical records indicate that only six goddesses have ever truly existed…”

“The Goddess of Destruction, the Goddess of Order, the Goddess of the High Heavens, the Goddess of the Forest, the Goddess of the Ocean, and the Goddess of Finality.”

“The original Goddess of Destruction utilized the authority of Destruction to create… to create… something seemingly called the Great Calamity, intended to annihilate the world… She was ultimately vanquished by the Goddess of Order…”

“Yet, after several millennia, the authority of Destruction still birthed a new Goddess of Destruction, who is now the Goddess of Finality…”

“The Goddess of the High Heavens once incited a ‘High Heaven Rebellion’ and was overthrown and defeated by all living beings on the continent… She ultimately fell into oblivion and vanished…”

“The Goddess of the Ocean, a new deity, was born from the very seas where the Goddess of the High Heavens perished, becoming the second wielder of the authority of Freedom…”

“But recently, just over a century ago… the Goddess of the Ocean was murdered by the Goddess of Finality, her authority stolen… and her entire lineage wiped out…”

“The Goddess of the Forest, however, voluntarily relinquished her divine authority and was slain by her own forest dwellers. The authority of Life and Breath was then claimed by the Goddess of Order…”

“So now… only the Goddess of Light remains, wielding the authorities of Order and Life and Breath, alongside the Goddess of Finality, who commands Destruction and Freedom…”

As she spoke these words, Yulim’s small face grew intensely serious, as if she knew with certainty that it would come to pass. She couldn’t help but ask, a hint of nervousness in her voice, “What’s wrong, Roly?”

Eve shook her head blankly. “N-nothing at all…”

“It’s just that you seem to know so much, Yulim, like an encyclopedia. I only need to ask, and you have the answer…”

Such a statement was, in essence, no different from direct praise.

Yulim didn’t consider herself particularly remarkable; she hastily explained, “Aside from the cause of the Goddess of the Forest’s death… all other deceased deities can be researched through various historical documents…”

“I merely… read a lot of books in the past…”

‘It shouldn’t just be ‘a lot,’ though…’

‘Yulim, you even know the precise details of divine authority changes and how many generations of wielders there have been!’

However, Eve soon found reassurance. Compared to herself, a newcomer to this world, Yulim, after all, was a young elf who had lived here for eighty years. Her experience was evident, and it was only natural that she understood various historical details.

After analyzing Yulim’s information, Eve drew a conclusion. “So, in essence, the current situation among the deities is that the Goddess of Light and the Goddess of Finality are in a state of mutual deterrence?”

Yulim shook her head. “It’s not quite to that extent…”

“The Goddess of Finality has not yet fully mastered the authority of Freedom, so her power is not comparable to the Goddess of Light, who fully wields two authorities.”

“Thus, the Goddess of Light still holds supreme dominance…”

“But if the Goddess of Finality truly gains complete control over the authority of Freedom… the world will undoubtedly face an unprecedented catastrophe!”

As she spoke these words, Yulim’s small face grew intensely serious, as if she knew with certainty that it would come to pass.

Eve fully comprehended the situation.

For now, the fate of the world rested in Anna’s hands.

As long as Anna continued to refuse the Goddess of Finality’s bargain, the advent of that catastrophe would be continually postponed.

Gazing at the sleeping blue-haired girl, Eve found herself with a newfound understanding of Anna’s penchant for oversleeping.

‘Anna has been secretly shouldering a heavy burden…’

‘Hmm… If that’s the case, then let her sleep a little longer.’

The small partitioned room fell silent once more.

Until Eve remembered her purpose for visiting, she quietly asked, “Oh, Yulim, it’s so late. Have you had dinner yet?”

The hooded girl hesitated for a moment, but ultimately chose to shake her head truthfully. “Not yet…”

Yulim had originally planned to rely on the leftover white bread in her backpack, thinking a small piece would be enough to curb her hunger when it became unbearable later in the evening.

However, Eve shook her bracelet and directly conjured a beautifully packaged bag of sweet treats, which she tucked into Yulim’s arms.

“If you haven’t eaten yet, then please take these.”

“I bought a lot of delicious things when Fionn and I went shopping this afternoon, and I prepared a portion for you and Anna too.”

“Consider these a token of my gratitude for sharing all this with me, Yulim.”
