How should she even describe this compensation…?
While one might accuse the system of being stingy, the sheer amount of gold coins was undeniably substantial. It was a veritable fortune, surpassing even the gold the Saintess had left for Eve.
Yet, Eve truly had no need for money. She couldn’t fathom where she would spend such a vast sum, especially since the system offered no shops or similar outlets to deplete it.
This left Eve feeling a touch disappointed, as she had initially hoped for rare items or skill books.
However, this minor disappointment quickly vanished from her mind. The system’s compensation had been entirely unexpected, and simply receiving something was enough. What if she needed money in the future, after all?
More importantly, the system could actually hear her feedback!
Any game that listened to player feedback for optimization and maintenance was already leagues ahead of its competition!
Closing the door, Eve returned to the picnic blanket and settled down, opening her quest log to peruse its contents.
All her previous side quests had vanished, leaving only two distinct quest categories.
[Starter Village Area Quests – Expand]
[Demon Lord’s Castle Area Quests – Expand]
It appeared all quests for a particular region were now consolidated. This update was surprisingly user-friendly!
Just as Eve had suspected, expanding the ‘Starter Village’ category revealed all her old quests. If they became too numerous or cluttered, she could simply collapse and hide them again.
Crucially, there were no pesky red notification dots!
‘I declare this system change to be far superior to anything its competitors offer!’
Collapsing the starter village quests, Eve then expanded the Demon Lord’s Castle quests below.
[Main Quest: Offer treasures to the Demon Lord daily within the Demon Lord’s Castle. Final rewards will be determined by the Demon Lord’s favorability after receiving the treasures. (Minimum rewards: EXP, Gold Coins, Demon Lord Affinity?)]
[Main Quest: Atonement in the Demon Lord’s Castle, the City of Redemption. Aid in defending its emptiness.]
[Side Quest: The Demon Lord’s Castle is severely understaffed and its defenses are weak. The Demon Lord is greatly concerned by this. Please assemble a powerful squad of demonic creatures. (Reward: 18 EXP, 10 Gold Coins)]
[Side Quest: The Demon Lord’s confidante, Eve Wells, has recently been troubled by something. Ask her what assistance she requires. (Reward: 4 EXP, 5 Gold Coins)]
[Side Quest: Accept the Demon Lord’s deployment orders. Travel to the Delicious Dora Bakery, find Lanya, and commission an exquisite 4-inch cake. Present the cake to the Demon Lord on June 6th. (Reward: 40 EXP, 40 Silver Coins)]
Compared to the dozen or so quests crammed into the starter village, the Demon Lord’s Castle only offered a meager four.
But!
After a quick glance at the rewards, Eve realized the experience points granted upon completion were ridiculously high. Moreover, the currency rewards were now in gold and silver coins!
The rewards absolutely dwarfed the paltry side quests from the starter village! What’s more, these weren’t impossible tasks.
The first main quest involved presenting gifts to increase the Demon Lord’s affinity. While the exact definition of ‘treasure’ remained unclear, Eve believed her considerable wealth would likely suffice.
The second side quest…
Eve paused.
She cast a peculiar glance at the silver-haired girl sleeping ungracefully beside her.
‘Why do I get the feeling our Demon Lord isn’t actually concerned about this at all?’
Pushing Fionn’s thoughts aside for a moment, Eve reasoned that since she herself was a demonic creature, the Holy Spirits she summoned were automatically categorized as such. This meant Wennya would also benefit from the previous buffs in the Malevolence Domain.
Therefore, if Eve simply summoned a few more Holy Spirits, this quest could easily be completed.
However, when she reached the third side quest, Eve found herself struggling to maintain composure.
‘What in the world is this?!’
‘Am I not Eve?!’
Eve pressed a hand to her forehead, utterly speechless. “Am I supposed to ask myself what’s bothering me?” she muttered.
‘What could she possibly be troubled by lately?’
‘Hmm… it seems there actually is something.’
Eve recalled the promise she had made with the little maid, Wennya, in the alley yesterday, and the myriad thoughts that had stirred within her.
‘That must be her most recent concern.’
[Side Quest Complete]
[Rewards Distributed]
[Congratulations on your advancement!]
[Current Side Quest Updated]
Eve stared blankly.
A sudden string of quest completion notifications popped up, leaving Eve utterly bewildered. ‘Huh? The quest is done just like that?’
She looked back at her quest log. There were still four quests, but the content of what had been the third quest had changed.
[Side Quest, Part Two: You have learned the truth of Eve Wells’s troubles. Please help her resolve her inner conflict. (Reward: EXP, Gold Coins)]
‘This side quest… is it a series? It has a follow-up?’
‘I have to help myself resolve my inner conflict? This is something else…’
Eve couldn’t shake the feeling that this quest had appeared because she had idly poked at the system yesterday afternoon, and someone had marked her down for it.
In any case, Eve currently had no idea how to proceed with this task; she was completely at a loss.
For her to resolve this inner conflict herself, it would likely just take time to fade. Eve believed she would eventually come to terms with it.
Thus, Eve temporarily set this quest aside.
The final side quest, by all appearances, seemed like a simple, straightforward errand. Yet, its experience reward was the highest of all.
‘Such an anomaly surely portends trouble!’
Eve’s mind raced.
It was common knowledge that quest rewards were generally tied to the difficulty of the task.
This particular side quest, however, detailed the required item and the submission time with unusual clarity.
This warranted deeper thought.
June 6th…
Eve had once heard a legend that the mythical demon Satan was born on June 6th.
Considering that most of the current Demon Lord’s Castle quests directly served the Demon Lord, Eve had every reason to suspect this date was Fionn’s birthday!
Delivering a cake to the Demon Lord on June 6th…
The implications were chilling!
‘Wouldn’t that be celebrating the birth of a demon and bringing calamity upon the world?’
If she actually delivered the cake, she would likely become a public enemy, marked with a “red name,” and attract all sorts of major trouble.
Of course, this was the worst-case scenario.
It was currently mid-October, and June had long passed. Even if Eve wanted to complete the quest, she would have to wait almost another year.
Eve had ample time to decide whether or not to undertake this particular mission.
At this moment, as Eve was deep in thought, she failed to notice the silver-haired Demon Lord stirring from the sleeping bag behind her, groggily sitting up and rubbing her eyes, which glowed with a faint red light.
She was awake, but it came at a cost.
Fionn felt she had slept incredibly soundly last night, as if she were back home. It had been so long since she’d felt such comfort that she now found herself reluctant to get out of bed.
Fortunately, Fionn remembered she didn’t have the privilege of returning home. She recalled having slept with Luosha last night.
At this thought, Fionn began to giggle to herself.
“Hehehe… Sleeping with a cleric like Luosha truly feels so safe and blissful…”
