Eve Wells observed the familiar, balanced improvements of her new profession and could not help but grumble, “Isn’t this just the template for a Banner Undead all over again?!”
“A talent that summons undead to fight is merely a name change! Don’t think adding two more talents will fool me into not recognizing it!”
System:…
[Special professions are inherently hidden variants of ordinary professions. Given that you previously selected ‘Undead Banner Bearer’ as your main profession during the last class change, even if the original class change quest was incomplete, a special class change will only manifest as a variant based on the player’s chosen original profession’s fundamental template.]
Even with Eve’s casual complaints, the system still displayed a prompt explaining itself.
“So, if I had chosen one of the other two professions before, my current special profession would also have a corresponding variant, right?”
[Yes.]
“Why do I always feel utterly ripped off?”
If given the choice, Eve would honestly have preferred to become a mage, envisioning the satisfaction of a single super spell wiping out hordes.
Her current profession wasn’t necessarily bad, but the thought of a future identity swap, where her own undead minions might be obliterated by a super spell, filled her with a peculiar dread.
Her mood was an indescribably complex mix of emotions.
Still, she had chosen the profession herself, so there was no one else to blame. Eve quickly came to terms with it.
“Then, System, since my profession has changed, has the uncompleted quest changed as well?”
[Yes.]
[Saintly Martyr Class Change Quest: Bask in the sun for at least eight hours during the day, continuously for one week. Alternatively, confront a Holy Light Baptism.]
“You call this a quest? Sunbathing can complete a class change?”
A corner of Eve’s mouth twitched. “Truly befitting the Banner Undead class template; even the class change quest is so simple…”
However, a simple class change quest meant an easier time for Eve, and she welcomed it.
If it had been a high-intensity training quest like that for a ‘Undead Warrior,’ Eve suspected she would have been utterly useless.
Her drastic reduction in all attributes still had a significant impact. Her limbs felt weak, and all she wanted was to blow bubbles and be a lazy fish.
“Alright, then I’ll start the class change quest tomorrow!”
Eve serenely closed her eyes, too lazy to move. With one leg dangling off the side, she lay on the bed and drifted off to sleep.

Unlike the two women who were now sound asleep, someone else found sleep elusive.
The study lamp still burned brightly.
Xien Wells sat at his desk, continuously sifting through Yarokan City’s annals.
The cemetery outside the city had been built many years ago, its history far older than Xien himself. Finding information about its original benefactors was no easy task.
Yet, this was a mission entrusted by the Saintess, and no matter how difficult, it had to be completed.
Xien also recognized this as an opportunity.
It wasn’t just about atoning for the commotion caused outside the city earlier; if he completed the task exceptionally, he could earn the Saintess’s good impression. That alone would be an immense gain.
If he were audacious enough, he might even curry some favor with the Church. Then, in his father’s eyes, he, the fourth son, might finally gain some influence within the family…
A flicker of darkness crossed his eyes, but he swiftly immersed himself fully in the annals before him.
Aside from poring over the records, Xien had already dispatched his subordinates to seek out the cemetery’s former gravediggers for more clues.
This continued until the early hours of the morning.
The rustling of pages suddenly ceased.
“Eh? What is this…”
His gaze fixed with keen interest on the almanac in his hands; a particular entry had caught his attention.
[Continental Year 719, August 25th: The daughter of Duke Wells took her own life at home, and the entire city mourned.]
The entry was brief but marked in red within the annals.
For such a mark to be added, it undoubtedly signified a significant event.
The unnatural death of a Duke’s child, while a major event, was far from warranting such a special marker.
However, this was an entry concerning his own Wells family.
Xien couldn’t help but scrutinize it further.
After a quick mental search, he recalled that neither the family’s annals nor their genealogical records ever mentioned a family member committing suicide at home.
He was certain he would have remembered distinctly if there had been a relative who died in such a disgraceful way.
‘Then this almanac entry must be mistaken,’ he thought.
No sooner had the idea appeared in his mind than Xien furrowed his brow.
“No, that’s not right…”
“These annual records, submitted to the Royal Court to chronicle major and minor events, are specifically recorded by Royal Court officials. How could there be an error?”
There was something deeply suspicious about this.
Such a historical record, without even a name, absolutely concealed a colossal secret within it!
He swiftly flipped to the next page.
What if there was a great secret?
Xien had a clear understanding of his own position. Delving deeper into such matters held no benefit whatsoever for a minor figure like him; knowing too much was rarely a good thing.
The priority remained the task assigned by the Saintess.
As he continued to turn pages, it wasn’t long before Xien found what he was looking for.
[Yarokan City Public Cemetery, funded and constructed by Eve, daughter of Duke Wells, built on April 11th, 717.]
Clatter—
The almanac dropped onto the desk. Xien felt a shiver of dread run down his spine, and simultaneously, a thunderclap exploded in his mind.
The scene at the city gates flashed through Xien’s memory.
“Then, have you heard the name Eve Wells?”
This was the Saintess’s casual question in the carriage.
At the time, Xien had been somewhat perplexed.
It was a name he had never encountered.
Upon receiving the Saintess’s instruction to investigate the original benefactor of the cemetery, Xien gave it no further thought, merely assuming that the undead incident outside the city tonight might be connected to the cemetery’s original benefactor.
He never imagined that the Saintess had dug a massive pit for him!
With the appearance of the name ‘Eve’ in the almanac, Xien was now one hundred percent certain that the Saintess had asked knowingly!
She definitely knew that clan member named ‘Eve’!
Adding to that the suspicious anomaly in the earlier almanac entry…
Everything was now connected!
While Xien had long suspected that the Saintess’s purpose in coming to Yarokan City was not simply a leisurely trip for entertainment, he was still profoundly shocked.
Who exactly was this ‘Eve’? What monumental events had transpired back then that would compel the Saintess to travel all the way from the Church to the border just to investigate?
He interlaced his fingers, propping up his chin, his gaze fixed on the almanac on the desk as he lost himself in thought.
This was an opportunity fraught with both risk and reward.
Whether to seize this future lay within a single thought of his own.
