A Glimpse into the Past

[Listen: Immediately acquire the locations of all undead creatures within a certain range centered on the user. During this time, senses are greatly enhanced, allowing the user to hear unknown voices. (No cooldown. This is a state-switching skill that continuously consumes magic power once activated.)]

[Assault: Enhance oneself, significantly increasing physical attributes. (No cooldown. Cannot be cast again while the skill is active.)]

Aside from Holy Light, which she had already used, the skill ‘Assault’ was relatively straightforward and easy to understand – a simple, brutally effective buff skill.

However, this ‘Listen’…

What did the description mean by ‘unknown voices’? A fierce curiosity seized her.

Eve glanced at Alice, who was still checking on the little maid’s condition, and decided to try the skill out.

After all, her current body was still unresponsive; she might as well do something productive.

“Listen!”

With a thought, the skill activated.

Everything before her swiftly drained of color, leaving the entire world a monotonous canvas of black and white.

After a momentary burst of cacophony, silence returned.

Profound silence.

Eve felt as though the world before her was an old black-and-white television, and she, the viewer, found the experience strangely ethereal.

Yet, even as the images on the screen moved, no sound reached her ears.

“Am I deaf?”

Eve frowned slightly, a wave of confusion washing over her.

Just then, a startled voice echoed from her side.

“E-Eve, Miss Eve!?”

In the pervasive stillness, this clear cry was jarringly abrupt.

Eve couldn’t help but notice it, instinctively turning her head towards the source of the sound.

There, on one of the room’s walls, hovered a translucent, ethereal blue figure, from which the voice had emanated.

The figure floated in mid-air, vaguely discernible as humanoid.

A chill ran down Eve’s spine.

It was the only thing in this entire black-and-white world that still possessed color!

Before Eve could even attempt to communicate, the figure let out a heart-wrenching wail.

“Miss Eve, is that really you!”

“Run! Get out of here! Leave Yarokan City! The Master and the others want you dead!”

“Everyone… everyone was killed by the Master!”

The ethereal blue figure swayed violently, as if struggling to break free, yet it remained anchored in place.

At that moment, a system notification materialized before her.

[Specter: A low-level undead creature consisting only of a spiritual body, possessing no means of attack. Due to lingering obsession before death, its soul remains tethered to the place of its demise, unable to dissipate.]

[Can be purified, with a 1.3% chance of transforming into a Holy Spirit.]

Eve furrowed her brow, scanning the system prompt before refocusing her gaze on the specter.

This was likely the second person Eve had encountered since transmigrating who knew her original body’s past.

Truth be told, Eve was quite concerned about her past life. However, Alice seemed only interested in doting on her and playfully teasing her, and she had no clear knowledge of the original Eve’s cause of death.

That was precisely where the problem lay.

No matter how affectionate Alice might be, she was still a Saintess, wielding immense power, and had been intimately close to the original Eve.

How could she not have thoroughly investigated her cause of death?

The original Eve’s demise was clearly a significant event.

And now, this might be an opportunity to learn more about her past self.

Yet…

‘Has she already become a specter?’

‘I wonder if we can still communicate.’

Eve murmured, then tentatively spoke, “Are you a servant of this household?”

The figure paused, then began to drift again, a somewhat shrill female voice ringing out, “Miss Eve, I am your personal maid! Do you not believe me?”

‘It seems we can communicate after all.’

Thinking this, Eve spoke again, “Why should I believe you? How could my father possibly harm me? What do you know? If you don’t tell me, it will be hard for me to trust you.”

From the specter’s fragmented words, Eve had gleaned that ‘the Master’ was likely the head of this household.

As for where ‘here’ was?

Although she had passed out when the knight carried her, the specter had called her ‘Miss’ and identified herself as her maid. It wasn’t difficult to deduce that this was likely the original Eve’s ancestral home.

Thus, the Master was most probably the original Eve’s biological father.

After a quick analysis, the situation became quite clear. With a little guidance, she should be able to extract information directly from this specter.

Indeed, the specter, lacking much intelligence, immediately spilled everything they knew:

“I overheard the Master talking with a knight. They said that if Miss had not gone to the slums, there would be no Alice, no Saintess.”

“They couldn’t act against the Saintess anymore, so they directed all their anger at you, Miss!”

“Oh, and there’s more! Poison!”

“The Master’s steward has already poisoned your food for today, Miss! Do not touch any of those dishes, nor the water! Even your cup has been poisoned by them!”

“Miss, you must believe me! I watched you grow up since you were a child. Everything you’ve done, I and the other maids in the house, we’ve all seen it! Your kindness is unmatched, and we will always be loyal to you, Miss!”

“We do not wish for you to die here!”

“So please, truly believe me, leave quickly! Get out of here—”

The specter’s voice grew increasingly agitated, increasingly anxious, as if some terrifying presence was drawing near.

Eve sensed that something unseen was reaching its limit. The next moment, the specter’s voice abruptly ceased.

With a throbbing sensation in her head, the familiar cacophony rushed back into her ears.

In the blink of an eye, the world regained its colors, and the ethereal blue figure on the wall vanished.

Everything that had just transpired felt like a vivid dream.

Yet Eve knew it had all been real.

The skill’s sudden cessation was simply because all the magic power in her body had been depleted.

The information the specter provided was also substantial enough; she needed some time to process it.

*Snap—*

Just then, two small hands clapped against Eve’s face, forcibly turning her head and interrupting her thoughts.

“Mm?! A-Alice…”

Before her eyes was Alice’s puffy, indignant face, her beautiful crystal-blue eyes now staring intently at Eve.

Alice: (ᗜ ˰ ᗜ)

Eve felt a pang of guilt, though she wasn’t entirely sure why she should.

With her cheeks held by the soft, small hands, Eve could only mumble incoherently through her lips.

“Wha… what’s wrong?”

Alice stared for a moment longer before retracting her hands and sitting beside Eve. “Eve-chan, what were you looking at? You haven’t answered me since just now, and you made me worry something had happened to you again.”

“I’ve told you, I’m not that fragile,” Eve retorted, then recalled the specter from moments ago. She decided it was best to share the information, turning to Alice with a serious expression. “Alice… I just met someone from my past.”
