The nurse sister’s smile froze.
Tang Yunle, in the prime of her youth, had never contemplated the heavy topic of death. She was still young, she still had vitality, and she still cherished this world.
But now… such a heavy question was being asked so easily by a little boy who seemed to be of elementary school age, more than ten years younger than her, as if he were asking what was for lunch today.
“Little Qin, why would you say that?” Tang Yunle walked to the hospital bed, bent down, and gently rubbed the little boy’s head. The sensation was nice, fluffy, and had a scent of cedar.
The boy lowered his eyelids, his eyelashes casting fine shadows on his pale cheeks.
“I have a very serious illness. Although my mom, dad, and big brother all say it’s okay, I know it’s very serious. Otherwise, they wouldn’t let me not go to school and just stay in the hospital.”
“Big sister, what medicine am I taking today? I want to eat candy after I finish.”
Perhaps because he was too close to the big sister, a blush appeared on the tips of little Qin’s ears, and he shyly turned his face away.
But he was still a child after all, and this shyness and calmness didn’t last long. Under Tang Yunle’s head patting, the tears and grievances in his eyes accumulated more and more.
The little boy’s tense emotions instantly burst, and tears streamed down his face. “I don’t want to take medicine… I can’t bear to leave my mom and dad, I can’t bear to leave my big brother, I can’t bear to leave my delicious snacks and fun toys… Wuwuwu~~~ wuwuwu~~~”
The force of his sobbing was so great that it gave Tang Yunle a headache.
Taking care of her younger brother and sister since childhood had been enough of a challenge, and now there was another one.
‘Little children are really hard to coax.’
‘Especially when they start crying.’
But thankfully, taking care of her younger brother and sister since childhood had given her a lot of experience, and she knew the general process: first, let him cry it out, then slowly comfort him.
“Don’t cry, don’t cry.” Tang Yunle gently patted the boy’s trembling back and wiped the tears from the corners of his eyes with a tissue. “We’re not taking medicine today. I’ll take you out to play, play fun things, eat delicious things.”
“Wuwu~ Really?”
“My mom and dad said I can’t go out to play. I’ll get infected by a virus.”
The little boy sniffed, tears still welling up in his eyes.
“Don’t worry, big brother is here.”
“Just stop crying first.”
Tang Yunle coaxed.
If this were the real world, she would never have done this. Taking a child from the intensive care unit out to play was not only irresponsible to his life, but also illegal and would land her in jail.
But this was a dream. In a dream, anything was possible.
“Isn’t it big sister? Why is it big brother?”
“It’s all the same, all the same.”
After comforting little Qin’s emotions, Tang Yunle looked around but couldn’t find the hospital room door, only four snow-white walls. So, she closed her eyes and silently recited in her heart.
‘Tang Yunke, it’s up to you.’
It seemed like a moment had passed, and it also seemed like a long time had passed. When Tang Yunle opened her eyes again, she was in a different world.
Sunlight poured down, a golden beach stretched into the distance, the clear sea sparkled, and tall coconut trees swayed gently in the sea breeze, making a rustling sound.
“Wow!”
“The sun is so big!”
Little Qin shota’s pale and slender little hand blocked the dazzling sunlight, then he excitedly rushed to the beach, grabbed a handful of sand, and threw it into the sky, his eyes full of joy.
And Tang Yunle found that at some point, she was holding a set of exquisite sandcastle building toys. She slowly walked to the little boy who was having a great time playing, gently reached out and rubbed his head, and shook the toy in her hand.
“Little Qin, let’s build a super beautiful sandcastle together, okay?”
“Okay, nurse sister!”
“You should call me big brother.”
“But nurse sister is so pretty. What should I call you if not big sister? Could it be that nurse sister is a foreigner and has many genders?”
Tang Yunle was at a loss for words for a moment and shook her head helplessly. “Forget it, call me whatever you want.” After saying that, she picked up the tools and started building a sandcastle with little Qin Liang.
Half an hour passed in the blink of an eye. Under the brilliant sunlight, several uniquely shaped sandcastles had sprung up.
Little Qin Liang’s round face was covered in sand, but compared to when he was in the hospital room, his eyes were now full of excitement and joy.
After playing for half an hour, little Qin Liang was hungry. He plopped down on the beach and rubbed his stomach pitifully. “Nurse sister, I’m hungry. I want to eat.”
Tang Yunle looked around. All she could see was the endless beach, the vast sea, and tall coconut trees, but not a single person, let alone any shops.
‘Tang Yunke.’
She silently recited in her heart.
In an instant, she felt some weight behind her. She reached out and touched it, and it turned out to be two fragrant portions of braised chicken rice and two cups of cold lemonade.
Tang Yunle looked at the food in her hands, then at the pitiful little Qin Liang rubbing his stomach, and couldn’t help but worry. Could such a small child eat braised chicken rice??
“Wow! What is this? Nurse sister, it smells so good!” Little Qin Liang’s eyes lit up. He grabbed a portion of braised chicken rice and began to devour it.
But just as he took a bite of the braised chicken, he was so spicy that he stuck out his tongue, his little face turning red. “So spicy! So hot!”
He quickly grabbed the lemonade and took a big gulp. The cool, sweet, and sour taste instantly revived him. His big ice-blue eyes sparkled. “Sour and sweet, so delicious!”
After finishing the braised chicken rice and lemonade like a whirlwind, the little shota, full and satisfied, lay comfortably on the beach, basking in the sun, his face full of contentment.
Tang Yunle quietly accompanied little Qin Liang, playing with him, eating braised chicken rice with him, and sunbathing with him.
This continued until the sun was about to set, at dusk.
The sun slowly set in the west, dyeing the sky a brilliant orange-red.
Little Qin Liang turned his head to look at Tang Yunle, who was dressed in white, beside him. After a moment’s hesitation, he asked, “Nurse sister, can you take me out to play again tomorrow?”
“Of course. I’m a nurse. Taking care of you is my duty.”
“That’s great! Thank you, nurse sister! I’ll ask my dad to give you a raise tomorrow. How about ten thousand?”
‘Only ten thousand a month? Is being a nurse so cheap?’
Seeing that Tang Yunle didn’t respond, little Qin Liang anxiously added, “If nurse sister thinks ten thousand an hour is too little, how about fifty thousand an hour? I still have some pocket money.”
Tang Yunle: …
‘Is this what a rich kid is like?’
‘I kneel before you.’
She nodded, considered as agreeing to little Qin Liang’s request.
Little Qin Liang cheered excitedly, wrapped his arms around Tang Yunle’s waist, and smelled her refreshing, sweet, and sour lemon scent, his eyes curving into a smile. “Thank you, nurse sister. Today was the happiest day of my life.”
“I hope every day in the future will be as happy as today.”
