Chapter 8: Nowhere Left to Run

Su Yuan felt that voice pierce straight to the marrow of her bones, threatening to devour her sanity.

Bai Shimo had entered full combat mode.

One misstep and Su Yuan would be struck by one of those light orbs.

A head-on fight?

Absolutely no chance.

Su Yuan knew that better than anyone.

Succubi were never a race known for their combat prowess.

Their strength lay in concealment, seduction, and mental manipulation.

So she needed an opening.

An opening to create a crack in Bai Shimo’s resolve… and then release the pheromones that would loosen her guard and cloud her mind.

While desperately dodging the increasingly concentrated attacks, she forced herself to think calmly.

Bai Shimo’s emotions were clearly unstable right now—carrying three years of obsession and anger.

That was a weakness!

But her mana was too strong, and her will seemed exceptionally firm.

Ordinary pheromone interference might not work.

She would need closer proximity, stronger stimulation, or… a distraction!

Su Yuan darted between various racks and stands, her eyes sweeping across the chaotic room.

Got it!

She narrowly sidestepped another orb that whizzed past her cheek, the scorching heat stinging her skin.

Instead of continuing to flee toward the exit, she used a wall-kick to reverse direction, suddenly veering toward the inner corner where a pile of stage equipment lay!

“Stop running—”

Bai Shimo pursued closely, her staff lighting up again.

Now!

Su Yuan appeared to stumble blindly toward the corner—but in the instant before her body collided with the debris, she hooked the tip of her foot under a broken metal light stand, mustered all her strength, and hurled it upward and diagonally!

BANG!

CRASH—CRACKLE—!!!

The light stand hit something with precision.

Immediately after, a jarring short-circuit screech erupted, and a shower of sparks burst like fireworks!

At the same time, the entire dressing room—no, even the emergency lights in the corridor beyond—suddenly went dark.

The entire backstage area plunged into absolute, impenetrable blackness!

“Ngh!”

Bai Shimo’s pursuit faltered for a brief moment due to the sudden darkness.

In that instant of visual deprivation, even a trained magical girl couldn’t help but feel a flicker of instinctive surprise.

And that sliver of an opening was Su Yuan’s only chance!

In the same instant darkness fell, Su Yuan had already finished channeling her mana.

Glowing purple patterns quickly formed into a charm array around Bai Shimo.

Then, a faint wave of pheromones, carrying Su Yuan’s desperate intent, began to emanate.

It was the highest concentration of pheromones—enough to trigger, on a primal level, the human instinct of infatuation toward a succubus.

Bai Shimo immediately detected that subtle, barely-there fragrance in the air.

The scent wasn’t strong, even slightly sweet—like faint electrical currents, it seeped into her nostrils in thin strands, agitating her nerves.

No…!

Her consciousness felt as though it were soaking in warm tides, growing sluggish.

Even her limbs began to feel weak and unsteady.

It was that succubus’s doing!

She was trying to shake her resolve this way and escape in the chaos!

Bai Shimo’s teeth nearly ground together.

She would never allow that to happen.

Three years!

Three whole years!

Only now had she finally, truly caught her trail again!

If she let her slip through her fingers tonight, perhaps… this really would be the last time.

That sly, cowardly succubus would surely hide even deeper—so deep she would never find her again!

“Heh… foolish.”

Bai Shimo let out a low laugh from her throat, forcing her slightly limp body to brace itself, gripping her staff tightly.

Her cheeks had begun to flush uncontrollably, her breathing growing quicker—but the obsession in her eyes burned all the hotter.

The sapphire atop her staff lit up, casting a soft illuminating glow that dispelled the impenetrable darkness, revealing the ravaged space.

Within her field of view: only the scars of battle—cracked walls, the shattered remains of the wardrobe split in two, scattered debris and dust.

Nothing.

That slender figure was nowhere to be seen.

But Bai Shimo didn’t believe the succubus had already escaped.

The barrier was still up.

The passageways had been sealed.

She couldn’t have vanished silently and instantly.

She had to still be here.

Hiding in some shadow, holding her breath, those doe-like red eyes wide open, waiting for her to let her guard down.

The heat and weakness surging from deep within her body grew more pronounced, like countless tiny vines trying to entangle her reason.

Bai Shimo bit down hard on her lower lip—using the pain to grasp a fleeting moment of clarity.

“Come out…”

Her voice rang out in the silence, hoarse from the pheromone’s influence.

“Succubus… is hiding and cowering all you can do against me?”

“Do you think… that will make me let you go?”

Her gaze swept across every possible hiding spot, the staff’s light following.

“Coward… I… I’ve worked so hard to get here… and all you do is run from me…”

“Since you saved me… you should take responsibility…”

“Damn you… unforgivable…”

The last words carried an uncontrollable tremor.

Her body was growing weaker.

Her vision even began to waver slightly.

She knew she couldn’t drag this out any longer.

Just as the weakness was about to peak, and the thread of her reason stretched to its breaking point—a flash of ruthless resolve crossed Bai Shimo’s eyes!

She no longer tried to forcibly dispel the pervasive mental influence with mana.

Instead, she turned the tables—channeling all her remaining clarity and strength into one desperate gamble!

Raising the sapphire staff high above her head, she swung it down with all her might!

“HWOOOOM——!!!”

In that instant, a pulse of mana, like lightning, exploded outward from the staff!

The room blazed bright as day!

And in that same moment, using the last burst of her explosive power, Bai Shimo pushed off the ground with her rear leg—and hurled herself, recklessly, toward the faint anomaly detected by the pulse feedback!

CRASH!

Fabric tore.

Debris scattered.

“Ow…!”

Immediately after, a panicked, soft, and utterly helpless cry rang out.

The heavy velvet of a spare stage curtain was yanked down.

Two figures lost their balance completely in the darkness—tangled, rolling, and tumbling together onto the cushioned resting mat beneath the drape.

A soft thud of impact.

Dust filled the air.

Su Yuan’s soul nearly flew out of her body.

She had thought that, with the darkness and the pheromone interference, she had successfully concealed herself—waiting only for Bai Shimo to let her guard down so she could slip away through the ventilation shaft.

She had never expected the other woman to forcibly break the stalemate using a method so close to self-destruction!

Now, she was pinned solidly onto the soft mat, with Bai Shimo’s weight pressing down on her from above.

Nowhere left to run.
