Chapter 5: The Flight of the Abyssal Beast

Abyssal Beasts were the name people gave to creatures that arrived in this world through rifts.

They first appeared in this world thirteen years ago, during the infamous Void Cataclysm.

That invasion was global in scale, inflicting significant losses upon nations worldwide, many of whom were still embroiled in the Second World War.

Ultimately, numerous countries vanished in the wake of that disaster, and even the then-recognized superpowers—the Soviet Union, Germany, and the United States—were not spared its ravages.

However, times had changed.

Now, with Abyssal Beasts reappearing in this world, they could no longer wreak the same devastating havoc upon humanity as they had thirteen years prior.

Bang! Bang! Bang!!!

Following the captain’s precise instructions, the team members unleashed a barrage of fire upon the giant chicken’s head.

Under the relentless, accurate assault of such heavy firepower, the giant chicken clearly could not withstand the onslaught, emitting continuous, pained shrieks.

Yet, it was no mere punching bag to be passively pummeled.

Having been so brutally battered from the outset, it was bound to retaliate, eager to demonstrate its true might to these audacious humans.

Spreading its wings wide, the giant chicken hardened a section of its feathers and launched them forth.

They flew like bullets discharged from a machine gun.

One dared not underestimate these hardened feathers, for their lethality surpassed that of conventional bullets.

Had this been their first encounter with such a move, careless humans might well have suffered dearly.

However, since the giant chicken’s attack patterns and weaknesses were thoroughly cataloged in their database, the course of action required no further instruction, not even from the captain.

There was nothing they needed to do.

These hardened feathers were utterly incapable of piercing the protective gear they wore.

Crafted from Abyssal Beast materials, this armor boasted both exceptional hardness and remarkable lightness.

The feathers struck their bodies with no more impact than a gentle tap.

Not only hardened feathers, but even a wolf’s fangs would struggle, requiring considerable time to penetrate this protective suit.

Consequently, the team members paid no heed to the incoming feathers, maintaining their formation and continuing their precise assault on the giant chicken’s head.

Realizing its feathers posed no threat to them, and that continued one-sided bombardment would only lead to its demise in due time, the giant chicken lifted its head and opened its maw, preparing to unleash its ultimate move, a deadly heat ray, for a desperate final stand.

Yet, how could a technique also documented in their database possibly succeed?

Humans were not fools.

Knowing it was about to unleash a devastating ultimate ability, would they patiently wait for it to charge and then release its terrifying power?

No, absolutely not.

Seizing the moment the giant chicken began charging its attack, the captain raised their weapon and fired a direct blast at its neck.

That spot, as noted in their intel, was precisely the giant chicken’s weakness during its charge.

Any attack there would instantly disrupt its heat ray’s accumulation.

“WAAARK!”

Blasted unexpectedly in the neck, the giant chicken immediately let out a tremendously agonizing shriek.

It thrashed its body even more violently and erratically, with smoke even seen billowing from its mouth.

It seemed that an attack to the neck did more than merely interrupt its charge.

“Excellent.

Its charge is broken.

Everyone, continue aiming for its head and fire!”

Witnessing the giant chicken’s now precarious state, the captain knew their foe was at its last gasp.

It was only a matter of time before it collapsed, provided they kept firing at its head.

However, this particular giant chicken proved to be an exceptionally tenacious individual.

Even under such sustained bombardment, it refused to fall.

Instead, it turned, seemingly preparing to flee.

“Trying to escape? Not so fast.

Weige, Yang Wei, switch to restraint mode.

Aim for its legs.

Don’t let it get away!”

“Understood.”

Recognizing the creature’s intent to flee, the captain issued alternative orders to two of their team members.

Allowing this Abyssal Beast to escape into another area would undoubtedly lead to significant casualties.

Thus, it could not be permitted to leave; it had to perish here.

The two team members who received the special command broke away from the main group, positioned themselves on either side of the giant chicken, aimed at its legs, and pulled their triggers.

In the next instant, chains forged from special materials shot forth, coiling around its two legs, binding them tightly together.

With its legs secured, the giant chicken was utterly prevented from escaping.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, it would be battered to death by the relentless bombardment.

But all living creatures, when faced with imminent death, unleash immense hidden potential.

Even beings from other dimensions were no exception.

Under the looming shadow of death, this giant chicken, which by all accounts should have been flightless, desperately flapped its wings, lifting its massive body into the air.

“What?!

The giant chicken can fly?

The intel never mentioned this!

Everyone, target its wings!

Shoot it down!”

Witnessing the giant chicken perform an action entirely absent from their intelligence reports, the captain was momentarily stunned.

Yet, they swiftly regained their composure, directing the team members to shift their focus to its wings.

If they could cripple its wings, they could prevent its escape.

The team members raised their weapons, aiming at the wings as commanded, but before they could even open fire, a blue meteor descended from the heavens, piercing directly through the giant chicken’s body, pinning it to the ground.

For the giant chicken, already on its last legs, this strike was unequivocally fatal.

Having taken the full force of the blow, it had no strength left to rise.

After struggling on the ground for a short while, it grew completely still, its life extinguished.

“Are you all alright?

No injuries, I hope?”

A blue-haired woman, clad in a form-fitting suit, extracted her long spear from the giant chicken’s corpse before turning to inquire about the team members’ well-being.

Her previous strike had been immensely powerful, and there was a possibility of collateral damage if others hadn’t evaded in time.

After all, this wasn’t some game with friendly fire immunity.

Potent attacks could inadvertently harm one’s own allies.

“Just a few minor scrapes, nothing to worry about.

A quick dose of medicine back at base will sort us out.

More importantly, we’re incredibly grateful for your timely intervention.

Without you, we’d likely have needed quite a while longer to subdue this beast.”

Indeed, the blue-haired woman’s attack had affected some of the team members, but fortunately, none had sustained serious injuries, so there were no major issues.

In fact, the captain was more inclined to express gratitude for her assistance.

Truly, those with superpowers were in a league of their own.

A target they had expected to spend considerable effort on was dispatched in an instant by her.

“No need for thanks,” she replied.

“I merely happened to be passing by and saw you struggling, so I lent a hand.

I’ll be off to assist elsewhere now.

Perhaps we’ll meet again.”

Waving a dismissive hand, the blue-haired woman vanished from their sight the very next second.

This was neither teleportation nor time manipulation.

It was her superpower: [Hyper-Acceleration] (TL Note: A superhuman ability allowing the user to reach supersonic speeds for a limited duration), which allowed her to achieve supersonic speeds for a limited time.

This was how she could disappear from everyone’s sight so swiftly.
