Join the ServerLuo Shaotian had already been detained in Dawn Company’s “Medical Observation Zone” for a full week.
As a survivor who had encountered high-risk pollution incidents twice in a row—and walked away both times completely intact—it was only natural that the company would keep a close eye on him.
However, the development of events deviated slightly from the normal track.
According to standard procedure, it should have been—
Physical examination, disinfection, confirmation of no residual contamination, signatures and fingerprints.
Once this whole process was completed, the company had originally planned to release him.
After all, detaining an active-duty criminal police officer was no small PR headache, even for a behemoth like Dawn Company.
But the problem was…
Before the final “signature” step, an additional process had been inserted.
A process called “Forgetting.”
**********
A few days earlier, in Dawn Company’s Memory Cleansing Room.
“Zzzzzzz—”
A blinding white light flashed, accompanied by the high-frequency buzzing of the equipment.
Luo Shaotian sat on a specially made metal chair. The intense light made his vision blur for a moment, and he instinctively blinked.
“…Is it done yet?”
He looked at the staff member in front of him, who was wearing a white lab coat and sweating profusely while adjusting the equipment, his expression puzzled.
“I mean… what exactly are you people doing? This is already the fifth time. How long are you planning to shine this thing on me?”
The operator, named Zhang Wei, didn’t answer him. Instead, he turned to look at a colleague beside him with a ghost-seeing expression.
“Brother Zeng… th-this… this isn’t right!”
He pointed at the completely unmoving readings on the instrument, his voice trembling.
“I’ve already cranked the power up to 100%! At this intensity, forget wiping the last few days of memories—he should’ve forgotten what his own mother’s surname is by now!”
“But this guy… he looks totally fine!”
The veteran employee known as Brother Zeng took off his protective goggles as well. He stared at Luo Shaotian for a long while, his brow furrowed, before finally letting out a helpless sigh and picking up the internal communicator at his side.
“Calling supervisor… this is the cleansing room. We’ve run into a tough one.”
“Yes, that policeman with the surname Luo.”
“This guy… seems to have resistance to our 【Memory Cleansing Device】.”
If it had simply been a case of “can’t wipe,” there might still have been room to maneuver.
But fate, it seemed, enjoyed stepping on this unlucky man one extra time.
Just as the logistics department was at its wits’ end over this issue, news came in from the tech department—
The surveillance mainframe at the exhibition center, which had been damaged by shockwaves, had successfully had its data recovered.
A video file marked 【Top Secret】 was transmitted directly to Director Bai’s desk.
In the footage, the scene of a three-meter-tall dark-red giant—formed amid torrential rain and ruins—tearing apart an Abyssal Chanter with bare hands and head-on clashing with a high-level pollutant was captured with horrifying clarity.
That was not power a human could possess.
That was the posture of the 【Chosen】.
Ten minutes later, a highest-level order bearing a bright red seal was issued to the logistics department.
【Top Secret · File No. 20501204】
To: Logistics Support Department, Technical Development Department, External Liaison Office
Issuer: Bai Qiming
Subject: Emergency Detention and Research Directive Regarding Sample “Luo Shaotian”
Instructions:
Classification:
After technical review, it has been confirmed that this individual, after being contaminated by high-level 【Terror-class】 forces, was able to achieve dual regression on both physiological and psychological levels, without exhibiting conventional bodily collapse or irreversible mutation. This phenomenon possesses extremely high strategic research value.
Execution Measures:
Effective immediately, initiate Level-One isolation procedures.
– Technical Department: A dedicated research task force targeting this sample must be established within 72 hours.
– Logistics Department: Responsible for providing a high-standard confinement environment that meets the subject’s physiological needs, with round-the-clock monitoring of all vital signs to ensure sample viability.
External Coordination:
Regarding the subject’s social identity (active-duty law enforcement), contact Liaison Officer Zhao Liwei of the 【Municipal Emergency Management Bureau · Special Disaster Response Unit】.
Under the pretext of “involvement in a major public safety case requiring closed cooperative investigation and post-traumatic stress intervention,” issue a formal secondment letter to the Municipal Public Security Bureau.
…
Within a lawful and compliant framework, all uncontrolled contact between the subject and the outside world must be severed.
Note:
This matter concerns a core technological breakthrough for the company. No department may shirk responsibility. No matter the means, the person must be kept in our hands!
And so, Luo Shaotian was “forced into leave.”
He was transferred to a single-occupancy room inside the company.
The environment was excellent—minimalist Nordic decor, a soft large bed, a private bathroom, and 24-hour hot water.
Three meals a day were delivered by dedicated staff, even better than what he ate at the police canteen.
Except for…
There were no windows.
The heavy alloy door could only be opened from the outside.
And in the four corners of the ceiling, four cameras with blinking red lights stared at him like the eyes of Death itself, monitoring his every move around the clock without blind spots.
This was a coercive measure known as “residential surveillance.”
Originally, it was used against criminal suspects as stipulated in Article 74 of the Criminal Procedure Law.
And now, the humiliation of being watched and imprisoned had fallen upon him.
It was, without a doubt, a massive irony.
During the first two days, Luo Shaotian hadn’t refrained from resisting.
He pounded on the door, shouted his demands, and even tried to dismantle the cameras to express his protest and anger.
“I have the right to leave! I’m a police officer! This is illegal detention!”
Such shouts echoed in the well-soundproofed room, sounding pale and powerless.
Until the third day.
The tightly sealed alloy door opened.
A man wearing a crisp black suit and gold-rimmed glasses walked in.
He carried a folder and a tablet, his steps steady, his face stern, exuding the elite aura unique to large corporations.
At this moment, Luo Shaotian was sitting cross-legged on the bed, wearing a set of gray cotton pajamas.
Hearing the movement, he snapped his head up. His bloodshot eyes locked tightly onto the newcomer.
The man was not intimidated by the deliberately hostile gaze.
He walked to the table, calmly adjusted his cuffs, then raised a finger and pointed to the silver badge on his chest, speaking in standard Mandarin:
“Nice to meet you, Mr. Luo. I am the company-appointed exclusive liaison officer for you. You may call me—Guangu Jun.”
Luo Shaotian narrowed his eyes slightly, sizing up the uninvited guest, the corner of his mouth lifting into a mocking cold smile.
“Guangu Jun? That’s quite a unique name… What, Japanese?”
Guangu Jun pushed up the glasses on his nose and gave a professional smile.
“That would be a misunderstanding, Mr. Luo. Thanks to the company, I officially obtained Huaxia citizenship five years ago through the high-level talent introduction program.”
“Guangu Jun is my legal Huaxia name, and also proof of my love for this land.”
He paused, his tone still gentle.
“Of course, if you find it awkward, you may call me Xiao Guan.”
“Cut the crap.”
Normally mild-mannered, Luo Shaotian had developed a temper after days of detention.
“What exactly does the company want by sending you here?”
“Two things.”
Guangu Jun raised two long fingers.
“First, to explain the necessity of the special protective measures currently being taken with regard to you.”
“Second…”
“To share certain key information with you, in hopes of obtaining your agreement to cooperate with our subsequent research.”
“Cooperate? Research?”
Luo Shaotian let out a cold snort, as if he’d heard the biggest joke in the world.
He planted both hands on the table, leaned forward, and glared straight into Guangu Jun’s eyes, roaring through clenched teeth:
“On what grounds?”
Faced with Luo Shaotian’s erupting fury, Guangu Jun maintained his irritating calm.
He didn’t argue.
He simply placed the tablet in his hand at an angle convenient for Luo Shaotian to see, then gently tapped the play button.
“Officer Luo, perhaps you should first take a look at… this video.”
The screen lit up.
And Luo Shaotian’s face gradually drained of all color…
