Chapter 237: Another reconnaissance mission?

The heavy car door shut, completely isolating the outside noise and cold wind.

Inside the Rolls-Royce, it was unbelievably quiet. Above was a hand-stitched starlight ceiling, beneath their feet a soft wool carpet you could sink into, and a faint, high-end woody fragrance lingered in the air.

“The company has temporarily arranged a mission.”

As he spoke, Luo Shaotian took a black tablet from the center armrest and handed it to Lin Yu in the passenger seat.

Then, with practiced ease, he shifted gears and steered with one hand. This beast-like luxury car merged smoothly into the flowing traffic without the slightest jerk.

“In this mission, you are the fully responsible officer, and I’m only assisting you. So calling you ‘boss’ in the private room earlier wasn’t a joke.”

Lin Yu, still a bit dazed, took the tablet.

“This is a tactical terminal developed internally by the company. Its core system is directly connected to the Super A-grade ‘Taiyi.’”

When he unlocked it with his fingerprint, the first line of the mission briefing made his eyelid twitch violently.

【Mission Code: Ying】
【Responsible Officer: Lin Yu (C-Class)】
【Support/Security: Luo Shaotian (External)】

“So I really am… the officer?”

Lin Yu sucked in a breath.

But before he could enjoy this sense of vanity, his eyes moved to the mission details—and his whole body instantly went numb, like falling into a fog.

“Another damn reconnaissance mission?!”

“Last time we went to Platinum Han Palace for reconnaissance—what happened? Investigating, investigating, and in the end we ran into a pile of disgusting flesh, nearly got ourselves killed thousands of times, and I even got fed some unknown Nurgle toxin—earned myself a ‘pain experience card’!”

“And now the organization is assigning me another recon mission?!”

“Isn’t this just forcing a duck onto a perch?!”

Lin Yu turned his head with a strange expression, looking at Luo Shaotian in the driver’s seat, wanting to ask what the company was thinking.

At that moment, Luo Shaotian was focused on the road ahead.

The neon lights flashing past outside occasionally swept across his face.

Those deep eyes, sharp nose, and perfectly defined jawline.

Combined with his smooth one-handed steering and the Rolls-Royce worth millions beneath him…

The whole scene looked like a male lead straight out of some top-tier CEO romance drama.

The more Lin Yu looked, the more a strange irritation rose in his chest.

“Honestly, this anger isn’t for any other reason.

It’s just pure jealousy!”

Damn it, they’re both men—so why does this guy get to be this handsome?!

Lin Yu grumbled sourly in his heart.

It wasn’t that he blamed his parents.

They hadn’t given birth to him badly. His features, taken separately, were all quite decent. Put together, he was a clean and fairly good-looking young man.

The problem was himself!

Lin Yu deflated a bit, pinching the soft fat on his stomach.

No discipline in body management, no proper skincare—he had completely wasted his natural foundation.

Although, since becoming a magical girl, he had indeed become more delicate…

…it still couldn’t make up for the fundamental flaws.

The more he thought about it, the more miserable he felt.

Why did it have to be a magical girl… instead of a magical boy?

If it were the kind where you shout “Transform!” and put on Kamen Rider armor, or turn into a muscle-bound magic warrior, he wouldn’t complain at all—he’d even go out looking for monsters to fight every day!

But instead, it’s a short-skirt, sparkly magical girl form!

How is he supposed to live in the real world like this?

He couldn’t possibly… go on blind dates like that when his mom nags him to marry, right?

“What’s wrong?”

Noticing the resentful gaze from the passenger seat, Luo Shaotian glanced at him while waiting at a red light.

“You’ve been sighing since you got in. Seems like you want to ask something. Go ahead.”

Of course, Lin Yu wasn’t about to admit his “I wish I were a macho man” inner rant.

“N-no, nothing.”

He coughed twice.

“I was just thinking—you showed up at the perfect moment earlier. It was like it was rehearsed. If you hadn’t come right then and grabbed that fat guy by his weak point immediately, I really wouldn’t know how to end that meal.”

“It wasn’t coincidence. I had already arrived—I just listened outside the private room for a few minutes.”

“Huh?!”

Lin Yu almost jumped.

“L-listened?!”

A dignified criminal police captain eavesdropping at the door?!

Luo Shaotian didn’t find anything wrong with it and calmly explained:

“When I arrived outside, I happened to hear people inside talking. That relative of yours was indeed quite annoying. I knew an argument would break out sooner or later.”

“So to prevent things from getting out of control, I didn’t go in immediately.”

“Instead, I used those few minutes outside to connect to the company’s intelligence system via my wristband and quickly checked your family’s background—especially that Lin Han.”

“As expected.”

He glanced at Lin Yu.

“A Yu, remember this: truly powerful and confident people usually don’t show off. Those who lack real ability and rush to boast loudly everywhere are often just putting on a front. They’re the most afraid of having their weaknesses exposed.”

“In the future, when you meet arrogant people, keep that in mind. Don’t be fooled by their bluster.”

“…Alright, I get it.”

Lin Yu didn’t even know what expression to make.

“Am I touched?

A little, yeah—after all, he did it to help me.”

But…

“You didn’t have to sneak around eavesdropping, you know? Do you realize you looked like some kind of creepy stalker lurking in the shadows?!”

“Got it.”

Luo Shaotian nodded and said nothing more.

Lin Yu sighed helplessly.

He gave up on that topic and returned his attention to the tablet.

“Back to business.”

He scrolled the briefing, frowning again.

“I still don’t get it. Why assign me another recon mission? They know exactly how badly I messed things up at Platinum Han Palace last time!”

“I nearly died, and now they’re giving me another chance to redeem myself?”

“Don’t say that. If it weren’t for you fighting desperately last time, we might not have come back at all. You proved your combat value.”

Luo Shaotian turned the wheel, the car smoothly entering a quieter street.

“As for this mission, you don’t need to be nervous. According to Taiyi’s risk assessment, the danger level is extremely low—almost no chance of combat.”

“We’re just going to a church… to attend a mass.”

“Huh? A church?!”

Lin Yu frowned even more, looking uneasy.

“Is that appropriate? I’m not even religious! I’ve never even seen what the Bible looks like! My knowledge of Christianity is limited to movies—people drawing crosses and saying ‘God bless you, Amen.’”

“You want someone like me to attend mass? Won’t I get exposed and burned as a heretic by fanatic believers?!”

“Relax. Your assigned identity isn’t a devout believer.”

Luo Shaotian said,

“Your cover is a businessman who has struggled for years, hit a bottleneck, and is seeking inner peace through faith.”

“A businessman?”

“Yes.”

Luo Shaotian explained:

“It’s not the Middle Ages anymore. Most churches are open to the public now. You don’t need to be baptized to attend.”

“But the one we’re going to is special. According to intel, its core inner area isn’t open to the public.”

“However, they love recruiting wealthy non-believers.”

“So you don’t need to pretend to be religious. Just act like a newly rich boss who doesn’t understand doctrine but is fascinated by the solemn and mysterious atmosphere.”

“Churches need funding. Once they sense you have money and are seeking spiritual comfort, they’ll swarm you like sharks smelling blood—trying to recruit you, even inviting you into restricted areas…”

“…and getting you to willingly donate.”

“Oh… I see.”

Lin Yu nodded reluctantly.

“But…”

He looked down at his cheap suit and muttered:

“Me… pretending to be a rich boss? Isn’t that too much contrast? That’s some serious acting!”

“Shouldn’t this kind of flashy role go to you? You just stand there and people would think you’re a billionaire!”

“I’m not really some rich young master…”

Luo Shaotian shrugged.

“Besides, this mission is meant to train your disguise and adaptability. That’s why the ‘main role’ is given to you.”

“Those were Manager Qian’s exact words.”

“…Fine.”

Lin Yu sighed like a deflated balloon.

When you’re under someone else’s roof, you have no choice but to bow your head.

Even if the company told him to pretend to be the U.S. President at the UN, he’d still have to do it.

“I’ll take the mission. So where are we going now? Straight to the church?”

“Of course not.”

“If you’re going to act like a big boss, this outfit won’t do.”

“We’re heading to the city center—Hang Lung Plaza.”

“To get you some proper gear… fitting for your identity.”
