Join the ServerAfter school, upon returning to the neighborhood, those hobbyists who claimed to be ghost hunters were still loitering around. However, they didn’t seem to be welcomed by the residents, who looked at them with sharp, almost predatory eyes.
These ghost hunters, however, were doing their own thing. Unlike the police or rescue teams, they didn’t need to ask questions or gather clues. Instead, they used various instruments to scan the area thoroughly.
They had even started going up the stairs, scanning the doors of other apartments. It was quite rude, no wonder the residents were annoyed. But no matter what instruments they used or how they scanned, they couldn’t find any clues or traces of ghosts. The reason was simple: even I had never seen a ghost in Liu Bai Yuan, so of course, their instruments couldn’t detect anything.
As I went upstairs, I decided to take a look at the wall graffiti. The man who had been chasing me said I knew too much, so I figured he would come back for me eventually. I might as well find out why he was chasing me.
Unfortunately, Fei’er’s graffiti was too abstract. Although I could somewhat understand the general content, I couldn’t identify the specific people in the drawings.
When I reached the tenth floor, I stopped in my tracks. The graffiti had been updated, and it seemed like Fei’er had drawn new ones. It appeared to be an adult giving her something round, like candy or another gift, and Fei’er seemed happy. The adult was depicted as sitting down.
Although it looked pleasant, based on the previous graffiti, the story often ended in tragedy. But I couldn’t figure out who the adult was, as there were no distinct features.
Soon after, as I returned to the twelfth floor, I saw Fan Yuxuan standing at my door, pressing the doorbell. I asked, confused, ‘Do you need something?’
‘Xia Miss, you’re back just in time. Come with me to see something interesting,’ Fan Yuxuan said hurriedly as he pulled me into the elevator. I saw him press the button for the basement level. ‘We’re going to the basement,’ he added.
I was startled. Why go to the basement? I had never been there before, and it was hardly ever visited by anyone. Was he planning to take me there to kill me and cover it up?
But the elevator door had already closed, and it was descending to the basement. The indicator lights were counting down the floors, and I couldn’t get out now. I carefully observed Fan Yuxuan standing next to me. He didn’t seem to have any malicious intent, though he could have been acting. He was dressed casually in a t-shirt and jeans, and there were no visible weapons.
My two magical artifacts and two insects were still with me, so an ordinary college student shouldn’t be a threat, even if he turned hostile, I could handle him.
So I asked, ‘What do you want to show me?’
‘You’ll see when we get there. We’re almost there, and I want you to see the true face of that woman with the surname Liu,’ Fan Yuxuan said.
‘Ms. Liu?’ I asked. Since I had transferred my good fortune to Ms. Liu, she had been quiet and peaceful these past few days. I occasionally saw her in the neighborhood, and we would greet each other.
‘Ding!’ The door opened, and a chill, damp wind blew out. The first thing I saw was a row of small cars, including electric vehicles and motorcycles.
The second basement level was a parking lot where the residents’ cars were parked. Following Fan Yuxuan, I could feel the humid, musty smell in the air. There was a sense of oppression, as the Buddhist light from above couldn’t reach here, creating a feeling of being in the shadows, which was quite uncomfortable.
Fan Yuxuan led me to a corner, and he told me to crouch down and look at a parking space. It was a beautiful black sedan, likely a high-end Mercedes-Benz, probably worth several million. I looked closely and noticed there was someone in the car, though the headlights were off and the tinted windows were one-way, making it impossible to see inside. But I could see the car body trembling slightly.
With my excellent hearing, I could hear faint female moans coming from inside, and it sounded like Ms. Liu’s voice.
‘I brought you here to see this? What’s so interesting about this? Are you trying to catch them in the act?’ I demanded of Fan Yuxuan. It was obvious that Ms. Liu was having s*x with someone in the car.
‘Oh? Xia Miss figured it out quickly? This is the new rich guy that Ms. Liu recently hooked up with. I wonder where she got her charm to attract these wealthy men,’ Fan Yuxuan said.
I knew why Ms. Liu could so quickly attract a rich man; it was likely because I had transferred my good fortune to her. I also knew she was engaged in prostitution, but I couldn’t help it. Even if Fan Yuxuan wanted to use this to smear Ms. Liu’s reputation, I wouldn’t care much.
‘Ah!’ A high-pitched female scream echoed, clear even without my enhanced hearing. Fan Yuxuan said, ‘They must be done. Hide, they’ll be out soon.’
Although I had no interest in spying on people having s*x, being caught would be even more embarrassing, so I followed Fan Yuxuan and hid behind a car.
Sure enough, after a short while, the car door opened, and Ms. Liu emerged, arm in arm with a middle-aged man. They walked intimately towards the elevator, indicating that the man planned to stay at Ms. Liu’s place for the night.
Only after they had entered the elevator did I stand up and say, ‘Well, the show is over. Was this what you wanted me to see?’
‘Yes, that’s it. Remember this man; you’ll see Ms. Liu’s true face soon,’ Fan Yuxuan said as he left, heading towards the exit from the basement to the surface.
‘What did he mean by that?’ I complained, but I had no choice but to follow him out. Climbing twelve floors again was exhausting, and if not for my enhanced stamina, I would have been worn out.
Once home, my phone rang. I had inherited Xia Yubing’s phone, but rarely received calls. Previously, a few people claiming to be my relatives had called to offer condolences, but I didn’t recognize them.
This call was from an unrecorded local number. After hesitating, I answered, and it was the officer who had handled the Xia family murder case.
‘Miss Xia, the investigation is concluded, and the bodies of your parents and others can be returned. The Xia family plans to hold a memorial service on Saturday at the funeral home. Please attend.’
