Chapter 203: The Forbidden Melody and the Piano’s Secret

“Yes, I was there, and I saw everything unfold,” I affirmed, nodding. Yi Zhiqiu’s question held no surprise for me.

After all, he had known I had music class today, which was why he had rushed to break the anomalous space and send me out, ironically leading to my entrapment within the anomaly.

“All the second-year students saw it, didn’t they? Why don’t you just ask them?” Xiao Qing retorted, still challenging Yi Zhiqiu. Her defiance suggested a significant, deliberate act on her part.

“They’ve all been mentally affected by something, unable to recall the precise details of what happened,” Yi Zhiqiu explained.

“Moreover, most of those students only know each other by nicknames; they have no idea what truly transpired.”

He then looked at us, his tone shifting. “But you two are protected by high-grade artifacts. Theoretically, the impact on you should be less severe than on the other students.

You should still remember what happened, and you certainly know more than anyone else.”

“It was a forbidden melody. That girl played a forbidden melody,” Xiao Qing stated. I looked at her, a little surprised.

Was she trying to cover for me and deal with Yi Zhiqiu on her own this time?

In this incident, I was somewhat complicit. Not only did I distract Yi Zhiqiu, but I also provided the channel for purchasing the cursed object used to modify the piano.

Xiao Qing was aware of all this, which was why she proactively stepped forward to handle Yi Zhiqiu, hoping to divert his attention from me.

“Are you certain it was a forbidden melody? Which one?” Yi Zhiqiu’s expression grew serious. The information Xiao Qing provided was indeed far more useful than what the other clueless students offered.

“I don’t know the name, but when she played it, I felt the music was incredibly eerie and sinister. The surrounding students were gripped by terror, fear, yet they couldn’t pull themselves away.

I also felt a profound chill, trembling uncontrollably. Thankfully, Sister Xia was right beside me,” Xiao Qing recounted.

Honestly, Xiao Qing’s demeanor was quite deceptive. She naturally possessed an innocent, adorable, and pitiful appearance. If Xia Yubing was exquisitely beautiful, then Xiao Qing was more understated, like a sweet, well-behaved girl next door.

She was better suited to dealing with Yi Zhiqiu than I was, because the expressions and tone in Xiao Qing’s voice often made it seem like she was speaking the truth, even when she might not be.

“Yes, I felt the same way. That song was truly bone-chilling, like walking through a graveyard in the middle of the night,” I nodded, corroborating Xiao Qing’s account.

“Then it was indeed a forbidden melody,” Yi Zhiqiu mused. “No wonder their memories are hazy, and their mental states are a little unstable. Do you know which forbidden melody it was?”

“How would we know? I only know the concept of a forbidden melody; that was the first time I’d ever heard that specific song,” Xiao Qing replied.

“Indeed, I didn’t know either,” I admitted honestly. “I didn’t even understand what a forbidden melody was until Xiao Qing told me.”

“It’s true, forbidden melodies are generally not meant for ordinary people to hear,” Yi Zhiqiu stated. “You absolutely must not try to search for or inquire about them.

Listening to forbidden melodies will undoubtedly cause mental harm. Suicide or sudden death are common occurrences among those who hear them.”

“Understood. We have no interest in forbidden melodies at all,” Xiao Qing said. “I’ll also make sure Sister Xia doesn’t come into contact with such things.”

Her words genuinely conveyed sincerity, giving the impression of a very obedient and sensible child.

“That’s good. But the problem is, how did Lin Qianyue, an ordinary music student, get her hands on a forbidden melody?” Yi Zhiqiu asked.

“Have you heard any rumors among students recently about forbidden melodies circulating, or other strange music?”

“I haven’t heard anything,” I replied. “But if you want to know, I can try to ask around for you, though I can’t guarantee any answers.”

In truth, I knew the forbidden melody was given by Mo Qingyan, most likely sourced from Liang Xuezhang. Even if Yi Zhiqiu investigated, it would likely lead nowhere.

“Alright, please help me inquire among the students, but under no circumstances should you actively pique their curiosity about forbidden melodies,” Yi Zhiqiu warned.

“That kind of thing spreads easily and is highly dangerous; it’s incredibly difficult to prohibit, and ordinary people might occasionally stumble upon it.”

“Next, I need to inspect the scene. At the very least, I want to see the piano that severed her hand. Will you two come with me?” Yi Zhiqiu asked.

His need for us to accompany him likely stemmed from wanting us to reconstruct the events that transpired at the scene.

“No problem, I want to see it too,” I nodded, following Yi Zhiqiu to the music classroom with Xiao Qing.

Upon arriving at the music classroom, we found it already sealed off by the school. After all, it was the site of an accident, and students were not permitted to tamper with the scene before the police arrived to investigate.

However, Yi Zhiqiu was certainly not among those restricted. As a safety consultant, he held an investigation authorization letter from the principal.

Moreover, the school administrators had witnessed the principal’s respectful attitude towards Yi Zhiqiu earlier, so they let him enter with little hesitation.

Yet, the teacher guarding the door still looked at me and Xiao Qing, asking, “Mr. Yi, you’re bringing two female students? What for?”

“Oh, they were students present at the scene and witnessed the incident,” Yi Zhiqiu explained. “I’ve asked them to accompany me to inspect the site, to see if they can recall any specific details of what happened.”

“I see. Very well, you may enter. Just be careful not to disturb the scene,” the teacher said, opening the music classroom door.

Inside, the room was in disarray. Chairs lay toppled, and some instruments had been knocked over and scattered across the floor. The chaotic scene vividly depicted the students’ panicked escape from the music room.

A blood-stained piano sat silently on the stage. The blood had already dried, and aside from the parched stains, it was almost indistinguishable from any ordinary piano.

Indeed, it appeared to be nothing more than a common instrument.

Yi Zhiqiu stepped onto the stage, cautiously donning gloves before he began to examine the piano. The moment he touched it, he frowned.

“Strange, how could this be?” he muttered to himself.

“What’s wrong? Is something amiss?” Xiao Qing inquired. Unlike me, she couldn’t directly perceive changes in the aura and assumed this was the piano as it had been during the incident.

“This piano is perfectly normal; it’s just a very ordinary piano,” Yi Zhiqiu clarified. “Aside from some lingering bloody and阴气 remnants, a regular piano couldn’t possibly sever a person’s hand.”

“Could it be an anomaly? I did hear about an anomaly concerning the music room before, and I told you about it,” I said. “Although there weren’t any rumors about a piano severing hands.”

From the beginning, I had expected him to consider the possibility of an anomaly, so there was no need to hide this from him.

The only concern was that Yi Zhiqiu might misjudge the timing of the anomaly’s formation, believing it had existed prior to this incident.

“It’s highly possible. By the way, did you notice Lin Qianyue’s state on stage? Was she lost in thought, or hanging her head, or perhaps seemed dazed and disoriented?” Yi Zhiqiu inquired once more.
