Chapter 44: The Glowing Paper

The light was so intense it even made Song Zhiyou unable to open her eyes.

After a while, Song Zhiyou managed to squint through her tears.

A glowing paper page slowly formed between her fingers and fluttered to the ground.

Song Zhiyou: “???”

Song Zhiyou: “!!!”

Song Zhiyou: “…”

“Song Xiaoliu, are you okay? What happened?”

Song Qingyao’s worried voice sounded, accompanied by the sound of her hurrying in.

In her panic, Song Zhiyou accidentally stuffed the glowing paper into her mouth and swallowed it in one go.

“I’m fine! Fine!”

No way. If Song Qingyao found out that her Thunder Fire Flower spell produced a glowing piece of paper, she’d be laughed to death.

Song Qingyao had sensed the dazzling light and that was why she came in.

But…

After entering, Song Qingyao looked around and didn’t see any special light.

Her gaze swept over Song Zhiyou suspiciously and finally fixed on her puffed-out cheeks.

“What are you eating?”

Song Zhiyou blinked. “Nothing.”

“Really?”

“Really!” Song Zhiyou said, swallowing the paper in one gulp.

Song Zhiyou froze.

About a third of the spiritual power she had just used seemed to return to her dantian.

She couldn’t help but take out another blank sheet, crumple it up, and stuff it into her mouth.

One third.

Song Qingyao was shocked. She immediately pounced forward, reaching out to stop her. “Song Zhiyou, don’t eat everything!”

But Song Zhiyou grabbed Song Qingyao’s hand and looked up at her. “Come on, hit here.”

It was over. Song Xiaoliu had gone crazy.

Song Qingyao didn’t see the paper Song Zhiyou had taken out; she only saw Song Zhiyou open her mouth and ask her to hit her hand.

Song Qingyao’s gaze softened, and even her tone became cautious.

“Sis, it’s okay if you’re having an episode. I’m sick too, I know. Look at me, I’m like an ice pop now but I haven’t given up. You still have hope for a cure. Don’t give up on yourself.”

Song Zhiyou: “???”

She just wanted to try if she could eat other people’s spiritual power!

“Here, hit with spiritual power.” Song Zhiyou turned Song Qingyao’s head to face the blank paper in front of her.

To avoid misunderstanding, she shook the paper again.

Song Qingyao looked at the paper, her expression growing more and more strange.

But she was afraid of agitating Song Zhiyou further, so she followed her instructions and struck the paper with a stream of spiritual power.

Song Qingyao used the Water Arrow Technique. She thought the paper would shatter instantly when hit by her spell.

But something unexpected happened.

The paper remained intact, and her water arrow seemed to be swallowed by the paper, leaving no trace.

Song Qingyao couldn’t help rubbing her eyes.

Before she could be surprised, she saw Song Zhiyou crumple the paper again and stuff it into her mouth.

Song Qingyao: “?!”

Song Zhiyou’s eyes lit up.

The returned spiritual power had increased.

So this is how the paper could be used?

But… what use was it?

Could she really use the paper as a shield and then eat it to replenish her spiritual power?

But a single sheet was tiny, hard for an opponent to aim at, let alone use as a shield.

Moreover, the paper could only withstand a limited amount of spiritual power. Beyond that, it would shatter and dissipate.

That limit was also hard to control.

Song Zhiyou fell into deep thought.

Song Qingyao was going crazy.

“Song Zhiyou, did you break through and get stupid? Drink some water. No, no, spit it out!”

Just as Song Qingyao was about to pour water into her mouth, Song Zhiyou barely snapped out of it and raised her hand to refuse.

“I’m fine, Song Xiaoqi. Calm down.”

Song Qingyao couldn’t calm down at all. Song Zhiyou slapped her hand on Song Qingyao’s face.

Song Zhiyou withdrew her hand and became serious. “We’ll set off soon and leave Maple Ridge Valley.”

Song Qingyao was puzzled.

“Aren’t we going straight to find the elders?”

“No, it’s not safe.”

Song Zhiyou shook her head.

The other side must have specific positions of the duty elders and disciples. Running into them would be disastrous.

Her plan from the start was to leave Maple Ridge Valley directly.

That was also why she had finally given those candidates a route to leave the valley.

She knew that if she directly told them to leave, they wouldn’t.

They would definitely choose to first seek help from the nearby elders and disciples.

In one scenario, they successfully find safe elders and disciples and inform them of tonight’s events.

In another, they encounter multiple elders and disciples in trouble and leave the valley.

Of course, both scenarios could happen simultaneously. The duty positions of elders and disciples were spread out, so to confirm faster, they would have to split into several groups.

Some would find living elders, some wouldn’t and could only leave the valley on their own. Which was luckier, Song Zhiyou didn’t know.

She chose the least hopeful approach: after checking on one duty disciple along the way, she would make no more attempts and leave the valley directly.

Of course, Song Zhiyou also had selfish motives.

If they split into several groups taking different routes in different directions, she and Song Qingyao had a better chance of leaving Maple Ridge Valley.

Song Qingyao also saw Song Zhiyou’s seriousness and stopped caring about the slap on her face.

She was about to put away the formation disk when Song Zhiyou stopped her.

“Don’t turn it off. We’ll keep it on for the rest of the way.”

Song Qingyao looked up in shock, a little pained. “This thing burns spirit stones. In that short while, it burned over three hundred…”

“It’s fine, just a few spirit stones,” Song Zhiyou waved her hand reassuringly. “You can write me an IOU when we get out.”

Song Qingyao shut her mouth.

If she had known, she wouldn’t have said anything.

“Are we not leaving now? What are we waiting for?”

Song Zhiyou glanced at Song Qingyao. “Wait for me to do some more preparations. You should recover a bit more too.”

“You just want to keep messing with your glowing thing, don’t you?”

“No, I don’t.”

“You do!”

“Shut up!”

In the end, Song Qingyao went back to keeping watch and recovering spiritual power.

Song Zhiyou, on the other hand, produced another glowing paper.

Same blinding formula. Fortunately, the rock crevice was deep; otherwise, the light would have been seen outside.

But Song Zhiyou also figured out one thing.

By using her spiritual sense, she could actively control the intensity of the light.

Still didn’t know what it was good for. For now, she’d treat it as a flashbang.

Song Zhiyou prepared three copies and then generated a large blank sheet.

The paper was as big as the pot she had used earlier, which could actually serve as a shield.

But she still didn’t know how much spiritual power it could withstand.

After one use, Song Zhiyou’s spiritual power was depleted.

She took a pill while taking out her spare blank papers, trying to stick two together.

Glue probably wouldn’t work. After thinking, Song Zhiyou decided to use her own spiritual power as the adhesive.

Under her spiritual power, the two blank sheets slowly merged into one, leaving only a faint fusion line in the middle.

It worked!

Song Zhiyou then stuck the remaining sheets together in a certain order, forming a large paper shroud that could completely cover her.

Halfway through, she ran out of paper and depleted her spiritual power several times.

By the end, there were still some gaps in the large paper.

Her spiritual power recovery couldn’t keep up, and her head was dizzy from continuous use.

There was still a long way to go. She couldn’t use all her spiritual power on this.

But… she had come this far.

Song Zhiyou’s gaze fell on the glowing paper, and she fell into thought.
