Chapter 45: The Hunt in the Mist

Mist filled the air.

A figure in a black robe swiftly moved through the valley.

She was completely covered by the oversized black robe. Her usual relaxed and carefree expression was gone, replaced by nothing but gloom.

Today’s operation had started smoothly enough.

Their people had successfully learned the positions of the duty elders and disciples from the water mirror, passed the information to them, cut off the tokens, and disrupted the water mirror…

She had even killed the elders and disciples on duty.

One, two, three…

But where were the people? Where were the candidates?

The black robe circled the area three times but couldn’t find a single trace of a candidate.

Helpless, she had to search elsewhere.

Still no sign of anyone!

When she reached the third location, she caught a very strong smell of blood.

When she arrived, she saw that a fierce battle had just taken place. The ground was covered with the corpses of Green Edge Wolves and pools of blood.

Clearly, candidates had been fighting the wolves.

The wounds on the wolves were chaotic, not made by a single person.

Those brats had obviously all stayed together.

No wonder she hadn’t found them despite searching so many places.

The black robe gritted her teeth even harder.

Wasn’t this a competition, not an assessment?

What were those brats doing together?

If they’d been together and she’d run into them, that would be one thing, but they had managed to avoid her.

The black robe’s aura grew even darker.

Still, the battle seemed to have ended not long ago. Those brats must be nearby, recuperating.

The black robe flickered, turning the area upside down again.

No one. Still no one.

The black robe was furious. Where the hell had those brats gone?

****

Rock crevice.

Song Zhiyou picked up the tattered paper robe she had patched together. She looked it over and felt quite satisfied.

This paper robe could perfectly wrap her whole body. The material was special and flexible, and she had cut it properly, so it wouldn’t hinder her movements.

Apart from the rows of glue lines, the outfit had no flaws.

Song Zhiyou slipped into the paper robe, which felt like wearing a white cloak.

The only problem was that the color was too conspicuous in the dark.

Song Zhiyou took off the white robe and stuffed it back into her space bag. She walked over to Song Qingyao.

“Let’s go.”

The route Song Zhiyou took with Song Qingyao completely avoided the guard posts and was rougher than other paths.

But both were cultivators with decent night vision, so walking on steep slopes was manageable.

The Eight Trigram Sky-Covering Array was active, and Song Zhiyou stayed in the darkest shadows.

They walked for nearly half an hour without incident.

But…

Song Zhiyou came across a dead candidate on the road.

He wasn’t pierced through the forehead, but had a black handprint on his neck.

It was also a single lethal strike.

An elder might have fallen to a long-range ambush, but this candidate… so close, he hadn’t even had a chance to struggle.

Who would attack them like this?

After all, these were elders and disciples from various sects in Qingzhou. The attacker was clearly provoking the entire Qingzhou sect community.

Either they were truly reckless.

Or they had the confidence to back it up.

Song Zhiyou didn’t care which. She only cared about surviving.

Just then, a loud boom came from not far ahead.

Song Zhiyou quickly found a spot to hide. Song Qingyao followed suit.

Through the thin moonlight, Song Zhiyou saw two people fighting fiercely.

One wore a green Daoist robe, a sect uniform. The other wore a black robe, exuding black energy, identity unknown.

The loud noise just now came from their fight.

Boom!

The sect elder was sent flying, spitting out a mouthful of blood.

On her left shoulder, a black arrow had pierced through her body, emitting thick black energy.

“Yuheng, the feng shui of this Maple Spirit Valley is quite good. It’s the perfect place for your grave.”

A cold voice echoed in the mist as the black robe slowly emerged from the shadows.

She held a crossbow-like artifact in her hand. Wiping the blood at the corner of her mouth, she looked arrogant.

The sect elder coldly stared at her, pressed a hand on the black arrow piercing her body, and snapped it off.

“Apart from sneak attacks, you demon cultivators have no other tricks.”

The black robe suddenly raised her hand, aiming the crossbow at Yuhengzi’s forehead, killing intent surging.

“So what? I’m not as sanctimonious as you. I only care about results.”

With those words, she fired the arrow.

Yuhengzi endured the intense pain, trying to circulate her technique to expel the arrow poison, but found that the golden core in her dantian had dimmed to gray.

Yuhengzi didn’t dodge. She raised her hand and caught the speeding arrow barehanded.

With a crack, the arrow shattered in her hand.

The black robe’s pupils contracted. Her eyes fell on Yuhengzi’s completely blackened hand, and she finally relaxed.

Yuhengzi was just holding on by a thread.

If this stalemate continued, the victor would be her.

Her voice was mocking and cold: “Yuhengzi, still putting up a front at this point? You took the last arrow head-on. How about this one?”

As she spoke, she raised the crossbow again, infused it with spiritual energy, and aimed at Yuhengzi: “Why not just die obediently? It would save me the trouble of wasting another Black Feather Arrow.”

Just then, she abruptly turned toward Song Zhiyou’s direction: “Who’s there?!”

With that, the arrow changed direction and shot toward Song Zhiyou!
