“Could that girl be dead? Old Madam Lin, this has nothing to do with me. She was the one who threw herself at the millstone. What a mess. I was just running an errand for Master Liu. If I end up with a murder case on my hands, what will I do?”
The matchmaker flapped her handkerchief anxiously. Old Madam Lin kicked the unconscious girl on the ground and cursed.
“Wretched girl, don’t play dead here. If you ruin Master Liu’s good fortune, I’ll make you pay!”
The girl stirred and slowly woke up. Lin Qinghuan frowned at the shabby room and the two harsh-faced people. A surge of unfamiliar memories flooded her mind.
Just moments ago, she had finished a day as a sparring partner at a taekwondo gym and was heading home to rest. Then she saw a child crying and walking toward a busy road.
She rushed forward heroically. The result was predictable: a speeding car hit her and sent her flying.
She thought she was done for. But instead, she had transmigrated into this backward village.
Her father was the third son in the family. Although he was the youngest, he was the least favored. He and his wife had been working in town.
Last month, they were both crushed by falling goods. The authorities and their employer paid a total of thirty taels in compensation, all of which went into Old Madam Lin’s pocket.
Now she had set her sights on Lin Qinghuan. She thought the girl was wasting food at home, so she decided to sell her as the tenth concubine to Master Liu, who was nearly fifty years old.
Today was the day the matchmaker was supposed to take her away. But the original owner had resisted to the death and, in the struggle, smashed her head against the millstone. That was how Lin Qinghuan had transmigrated.
After absorbing the memories, Lin Qinghuan looked up impatiently. She met the eyes of her nominal grandmother. What a black-hearted woman. She had taken the money from her son and daughter-in-law’s deaths but couldn’t even spare their orphan.
Old Madam Lin was angered by the glare. She raised a hand to slap Lin Qinghuan, but Lin Qinghuan spun aside. The old woman nearly lost her balance and stumbled.
“Stop wasting time. Master Liu is one of the wealthiest men in Pingyang Town. Even as a concubine, you’ll live a good life. Your grandmother is doing this for your own good. Don’t be ungrateful!” Old Madam Lin grabbed her arm, ready to drag her out if necessary. She had already accepted Master Liu’s betrothal gifts, so the girl had to go.
“One of the wealthiest? Who doesn’t know Master Liu is over fifty? His children are probably older than me. That’s a den of wolves and tigers! If you really think Master Liu is a good match, why don’t you marry off Eldest Sister and Second Sister?”
The words stunned Old Madam Lin. She glared down at Lin Qinghuan. Usually, this girl couldn’t squeeze out a single fart no matter how many times she was beaten. Today, she actually knew how to talk back?
“How could your eldest and second sisters marry him? I have my own plans for them. You be good and obedient, and you’ll save yourself some pain!” Old Madam Lin’s words carried a veiled threat. She couldn’t believe it. She had controlled this wretched girl since she was a child. Was she going to rebel now?
The matchmaker quickly smoothed things over. “Oh, what kind of talk is that? Older men know how to cherish their wives. Once you marry him, you’ll be dressed in silk and fed delicacies. Your whole family will bask in your glory.”
Lin Qinghuan shot her a cold glare. This matchmaker was no good either. She would say anything for money, even selling her conscience.
