Chapter 54: Creek Worms and Coppers

“Hey, what’s wrong with scrap meat? Scrap meat is still meat, isn’t it? As long as it’s meaty, that’s fine. Look at our family’s situation, we should save where we can.”

Second Aunt glared resentfully at Big Aunt and Lin Yanlan. If it weren’t for them, why would she have to eat scrap meat?

Even though she turned up her nose at it, it was still meat, so she added seasonings and cooked it anyway.

When the dish was served, Old Madam Lin was still lecturing.

“See, it comes out the same once it’s cooked. Us farming folk don’t have that many fussy requirements.”

Just as they were about to eat, Zhang Cuihong’s loud voice rang out from outside again.

“Auntie Lin, have you eaten yet?”

Big Aunt wanted to move the meat aside and put it away. After all, there was only this little bit, and her own family didn’t have enough to eat. How could they give it to outsiders?

But Old Madam Lin scolded her.

“It’s rare that we get to eat meat, so of course we should let them see it. Otherwise they’ll all think our family is doing worse than that shameless girl Lin Qinghuan.”

Big Aunt had no choice but to withdraw her hand, but she still quickly picked up a piece of meat with her chopsticks for Lin Yanlan and Lin Yanhong each.

“Auntie Lin, still eating?” Zhang Cuihong walked in with practiced ease, looking completely at home.

Old Madam Lin had no choice but to put down her chopsticks and chat with her.

“Yes, we were late preparing my girl’s dowry today, so we’re only eating now. What brings you here?”

Zhang Cuihong’s eyes were fixed tightly on the plate of meat on the table, drool almost dripping. She really wanted to pick up a piece and taste it.

Seeing this, Old Madam Lin’s vanity was greatly satisfied, and even her smile deepened.

“Oh, um, do you know what Lin Qinghuan did today?” Zhang Cuihong remembered why she came and quickly shifted her gaze.

“That dead girl? She went to town with us on the ox cart today and didn’t do anything.” Old Madam Lin was baffled. She believed Zhang Cuihong definitely didn’t come just to say this; there was probably something she didn’t know.

“I’m talking about after you all came back from town.” Zhang Cuihong’s tone turned mysterious.

“There’s a kid near my house who usually likes to play in that creek. Today he came back holding fifteen coppers. Guess who gave him the money?”

At this point, the answer was on the tip of everyone’s tongue.

The Lin family members all looked at each other in bewilderment. They really couldn’t figure out why Lin Qinghuan would just give money to those kids.

“I was curious too, so I went over to ask around. The kid said that Lin Qinghuan had them catch some creek worms and small fish in the ditch, and the one who got the most even got twenty coppers.”

This simply subverted Zhang Cuihong’s worldview, which was why she hurried over to share it with Old Madam Lin.

“Tell me, creek worms and small fish are everywhere. You can catch a lot in one net. Why would Lin Qinghuan have the kids catch so many?

What does she want to do with them? You wouldn’t feed that many even to livestock. And that kid also said that Lin Qinghuan told them to keep catching there tomorrow, and she’ll take however many they catch. What do you think she’s using them for?”

They couldn’t guess Lin Qinghuan’s purpose. They only knew she had just handed out money like that, and the itch in their hearts was unbearable.

“Cuihong, I’m going to be busy with my granddaughter’s marriage these next two days. Do me a favor and keep an eye on Lin Qinghuan’s place. Make sure you find out what she needs those things for.”

Old Madam Lin’s curiosity was almost at its peak. Unless Lin Qinghuan had lost her mind, she couldn’t think of a second possibility.
