Chapter 60: The Bride Departs

After coming to that realization, Lin Yanlan finally felt like she was the one going off to enjoy a comfortable life.

As for Lin Yanhong, she was so resistant to marrying Master Liu. Even with good luck, she’d end up with a butcher or a vegetable farmer. That wouldn’t necessarily be better than her own situation.

“Be obedient at Master Liu’s house. Don’t ever make him angry, you hear me? Come home often when you have nothing to do. Always keep your family in mind.”

Old Madam Lin held Lin Yanlan’s hand and couldn’t stop nagging, afraid that the dowry she had prepared would go to waste.

When Old Madam Lin finished, Big Aunt wanted to say something, but a servant from the Liu household cut her off loudly.

“Alright, alright. We need to carry the mistress back and report to the master. Delaying the auspicious hour won’t be forgiven.”

The servant waved his hand, and the sedan bearers immediately lifted the bridal sedan with ropes and headed out without any pause.

Big Aunt watched the sedan’s shadow reluctantly until its last trace disappeared.

As for those who had offered auspicious words, they all looked at Old Madam Lin now, showing no sign of leaving.

It was the village rule. Either stay for the wedding feast, or give red envelopes as a token of happiness.

Obviously, the Lin family hadn’t set out a feast today, so they were waiting for red envelopes.

“Cough, cough.” Old Madam Lin slowly took out a few small red envelopes, each containing just a few coins. It was just for good luck, no need for more than that.

But the people who opened them didn’t see it that way. In the village, red envelopes like this usually started at ten coins. Giving just a few coins, was she trying to shoo away beggars?

Everyone said the Lin family lived the best, but they didn’t expect such stinginess.

“Thank you all for coming today. Once my Yanlan stands firm in her husband’s home, I’ll invite you to make up for the wedding feast later.”

Old Madam Lin smiled and said some polite words. The underlying message was that they could leave now, since she hadn’t prepared any meal for them.

What else could they say? They wouldn’t fall out over a few coins.

Besides, Lin Yanlan had married Master Liu. If she did win his favor, she’d be bringing back silver in amounts of several taels. They’d be lucky to get a sip of soup from that.

After everyone left, the Lin household returned to silence, as if Lin Yanlan were still home. Nothing had changed.

“Alright, go do what you need to do. There’s still so much work in the fields. If you don’t work, you don’t eat today!”

“It’s not like we’re resting because we hosted guests. The people are gone now. If you’re idle, you work the fields. Otherwise, this whole family will have nothing to eat.”

Lin Daguo took Lin Zhengfeng to the fields, but Lin Zhenggui shirked the work without a qualm.

“I’m going to the county to see if I can find some work. If I earn more, I can save up some betrothal gifts for Jiadong. Leave the field work to big brother and father.”

Old Madam Lin nodded with satisfaction. She felt this was the right idea. The family couldn’t rely only on that bit of farmland; they needed able-bodied men to go out and earn money.

“Go on. If there’s work, do it seriously. No need to worry about home.”

Big Aunt watched and felt displeased. Why could Lin Zhenggui go out to work while Lin Zhengfeng couldn’t?

Anyway, Lin Zhenggui’s earnings were only for saving up Jiadong’s betrothal gifts. What did that have to do with the family? He still ate as usual every day.

Working the fields was for the whole family’s benefit, which meant her husband was doing the work of two people.

But Yanlan had just gotten married, and the family had prepared a lot of dowry. If she voiced her dissatisfaction now, she’d definitely get shot down.
