Chapter 37: Drawing Lots for Marriage

“Lin Qinghuan, that wretched girl, has no luck. It’s just as well. When our family prospers in the future, she won’t be welcome to come near us!”

Second Aunt couldn’t care less. She had given birth to a son, so her Lin Jiadong would have a share in any major family affairs. In any case, the hard work wouldn’t fall on her.

Big Aunt hadn’t wanted her daughter to jump into a pit of fire, but now hearing Old Madam Lin’s words, she began to waver.

Compared to their family, Master Liu’s household truly lived like immortals.

As the saying goes, when one person attains enlightenment, even their chickens and dogs ascend to heaven.

If either Yanhong or Yanlan could marry into that family, they could bring the whole family along to enjoy a good life. Then who would dare mock her for not bearing a son?

Lin Zhengfeng had no objection. Daughters were a loss anyway. If one could marry Master Liu and bring honor to the family, what was wrong with that?

Lin Yanhong and Lin Yanlan immediately felt as if a great disaster was upon them. They could only tug helplessly at their mother’s sleeves, hoping she would side with them.

“This matter is settled. I’ve already discussed it thoroughly with Master Liu. I’ll say it again today: no matter which granddaughter marries him, the family will prepare a dowry and give her an extra tael of silver as private savings.”

You can’t catch a wolf without risking a child. Old Madam Lin could only grit her teeth and offer a tael of silver to bribe them, all for the sake of more benefits for the Lin family later.

Lin Yanhong shrank back. Even with a tael of silver as private savings, she didn’t want to marry into Master Liu’s household.

Master Liu was already over forty, the same age as her father. He had so many concubines in his back courtyard. Married into that, she’d be on tenterhooks every day.

Lin Yanlan looked fearfully at Lin Zhengfeng, hoping he would speak for her. But she didn’t even get a glance. Disappointed, she lowered her eyes.

“How about this. You’re both my granddaughters and I love you equally. I won’t force you. We’ll draw lots. Whoever gets the short one marries him. How about that?”

Old Madam Lin made the final decision. One of her granddaughters had to marry him anyway. Better to cut through the knot quickly, before more delays and complications arose.

“I’ll write the slips.”

Second Aunt bustled back to her room and wrote two slips. One said “marry,” the other said “not marry.” Now the twins’ fate was in their own hands.

“Draw now. You chose them yourselves. No matter the outcome, you can’t blame anyone else.” Second Aunt sounded somewhat gleeful.

Lin Yanlan looked left and right, then picked the slip that appealed to her. Lin Yanhong had no choice but to take the remaining one.

Everyone stared intently at the slip in Lin Yanlan’s hand. She had picked first. Was it good or bad?

As the slip slowly unfolded, the words “Not Marry” stood out clearly. The outcome was set.

Lin Yanhong immediately beamed with joy. She didn’t even need to look at her own slip to know it said “Not Marry.”

Lin Yanlan felt as if she had been struck by a club. Dazed, she didn’t know how to react.

Big Aunt quickly pulled her into an embrace to comfort her. “Daughter, marry into Master Liu’s household with peace of mind. Mother will take care of everything for you.”

“Enough. Tomorrow, your grandmother and I will go to the county to buy your dowry. You stay at home and wait for the wedding. Don’t cause any more trouble.”

Old Madam Lin shot Second Aunt a look. She would be home all day; she could keep an eye on this girl and prevent her from doing anything disgraceful.
