Chapter 43: The Light in the Darkness

She pulled out the box, revealing a full box of matches.

She casually took one out, then struck it hard against the side. Sparks flew instantly, and a flame sprang up.

The shop assistant stared, dumbfounded. This thing was amazing. It was even more convenient than a fire striker.

How had the Tianji Pavilion never discovered something like this? And where did this girl get it?

But Lin Qinghuan didn’t pay attention to his confusion. She continued to demonstrate the lighter.

“This one is even easier. You just hold it upright, press here, and fire comes out immediately.”

With a click, the lighter shot up a tall flame, making the shop assistant jerk his head back in fright.

She decided to keep the flashlight as a surprise. After all, in an ancient era without electricity, something that could illuminate was even more precious.

“You’ve seen everything. Can you introduce me to your manager now?” Lin Qinghuan asked calmly, as if she had known the outcome all along.

The shop assistant swallowed nervously. He was immensely grateful he hadn’t offended this young woman. If these items slipped through his fingers, the manager would make his head roll.

“Of course. Please wait in the back hall. I’ll fetch the manager right away.”

Lin Qinghuan was led to a tea room in the back. It was empty, but she didn’t feel awkward. She casually picked up a cup and drank.

About two minutes later, hurried footsteps approached. The man in front wore a white brocade robe and looked quite elegant.

“Manager, it’s this young lady.”

“Miss, show me what you have in your hand, quickly!” Mo Chen’s eyes burned with excitement.

Clearly, the shop assistant had already told him everything on the way over, which was why he was so worked up.

Lin Qinghuan demonstrated the matches and the lighter again, then slowly took out the flashlight.

“Please have the assistant cover all the light sources in this room. I’ll show you this item.”

The first two items were already astonishing. The last one, saved for last, couldn’t be any less impressive.

“Hurry up!” Mo Chen urged impatiently.

The shop assistant had someone bring black cloth and cover all the places where light came in. The room plunged into darkness, with only a faint glimmer to show the way.

“Miss, can you show us now?” Mo Chen couldn’t wait. From her request to block the light, he could guess a bit, but he wasn’t sure.

“Of course.”

Lin Qinghuan pressed the button on the flashlight. A beam of light burst into the dark room, illuminating everything it touched with startling clarity.

Mo Chen’s breathing grew heated. Two years ago, their Pavilion Master had researched mechanisms related to light, but failed and had to give up.

If the Pavilion Master knew such a thing existed in the world, he would probably be just as excited.

After the demonstration, Lin Qinghuan put everything away, and the shop assistant removed all the black cloth.

“Miss, I have a few questions for you,” Mo Chen said, gesturing for her to sit down. He personally poured tea for her.

“Go ahead.”

Lin Qinghuan knew what he wanted to ask. Modern items were too advanced for ancient times. It was only natural for him to have doubts.

“Where did you get these things? Can you disclose that? Do they have any usage limits?”
