Chapter 13: A New Residence

Then Lin Qinghuan would be the one begging them to take it, and she’d have no say in the matter. They’d just have to accept it with clear consciences.

With things settled, Ma Weiping had no reason to stay. Lin Qinghuan and her brother walked the village chief to the entrance, not turning back until he was out of sight.

Village Chief Jia Dafu dropped his smile instantly and shot Lin Qinghuan a glare of barely contained anger.

In all these years in Peach Blossom Village, no one had ever involved the authorities for a private family matter like splitting the household or severing ties. She was the first.

If word got out, where would he, the village chief, put his face? A little girl dared to defy him. She was asking for trouble.

Lin Qingyu tugged at his sister’s sleeve, his voice trembling. “Sister, I think Uncle Village Chief doesn’t like us. What if he kicks us out of the village?”

Lin Qinghuan didn’t care at all. She felt no fear or respect for Jia Dafu.

This village chief was virtually useless. If he had said a fair word and not encouraged the Lin family’s arrogance, things wouldn’t have come to this. Now he was acting like it was her fault.

“He won’t chase us out. Let’s go to Xiao Hanting’s place now.” Lin Qinghuan let out a breath. She’d been single her whole life in modern times, and now, on her second day in this world, she’d found herself a husband. Talk about being impatient.

That day, the hottest topic in Peach Blossom Village was the Lin family and Lin Qinghuan. But Lin Qinghuan gave them no time to be shocked. She quickly moved in with Xiao Hanting and settled down.

Erniu chattered the whole way. It was clear how thrilled she was that Lin Qinghuan had left that family.

“I don’t even want to talk about the rest of the Lin family. When your parents were alive, they treated your uncle and aunt like slaves. Now that they’re dead, they treat you and Qingyu the same way. Cutting ties was the smartest move. If you ever need help, just tell me. If I can help, I won’t refuse.”

Erniu pounded her ample chest, her voice loud and firm.

Her family was well-off even by county standards. Her parents were medicine dealers, hauling herbs around and making a decent living. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have been able to feed Erniu so well that she grew up plump.

Because of her weight, Erniu never had many friends growing up. Lin Qinghuan was the only one willing to play with her, so she felt a deeper bond.

“Thanks, Erniu. That means a lot. I’m going to make a good life for myself.” Lin Qinghuan’s eyes were full of gentle warmth. Those who knew her understood that this smile was only for people she considered close.

“Hmm… honestly, I don’t think you and Xiao Hanting are a good match. He’s a scholar, sure, but his leg is crippled. He’ll never walk. You’ll suffer. But if you don’t marry him, you won’t have a place in the village. You might even get driven out. So I guess you have no choice for now.”

Lin Qinghuan laughed. She knew what Erniu meant. She wanted her to escape the Lin family, but she didn’t want her to marry Xiao Hanting either.

From Erniu’s point of view, she’d just jumped out of the tiger’s den into a dragon’s pool.

“Don’t worry, Erniu. I’m not marrying Xiao Hanting on impulse. He’s an upright, kind man, well-read and interesting. Living with someone like him will be fun.”

Erniu still didn’t see what was so great about Xiao Hanting. Her mother always said, when you marry a man, you marry his clothes and food. Being able to write poems was useless.

What mattered was strength and being able to support the family. Otherwise, going hungry while listening to him recite sour verses would make her want to beat him up.
