Chapter 49: A Heartwarming Meal

The older boy spoke up, a little shy.

“Sister, can we still help you catch these later?”

Boys their age ate their families out of house and home. They were too young to work, couldn’t focus on their studies, and spent every day with nothing to do.

If they could have a steady job, it would help their families a lot.

Lin Qinghuan was more than happy. Kids had endless energy, and with so many streams in the village, they could probably pull in dozens of pounds a day.

“Sure, but be careful. Don’t go where it’s deep. From now on, just bring everything straight to my house.”

After giving them instructions, she took out an expanding net bag and loaded all the crayfish and other catches into it, then carried it home.

Halfway there, she found a secluded spot along the path and recycled most of the haul into her space.

“Detected: twelve pounds of crayfish. Recycled value: two taels, four mace.”

“Detected: seven fish. Recycled value: three taels.”

“Detected: three pounds of eel. Recycled value: five taels.”

“…”

All together, she got about twenty taels from the recycling. She kept a little to make a mixed stew for the family.

She’d spent only a few dozen coppers and gotten twenty taels. The profit margin was insane.

If she could get everyone in the village to collect wild goods, she might net hundreds of taels a day.

Lin Qinghuan felt a step closer to her dream of becoming the richest person around.

Back in the modern world, she’d had no parents, scraped by as a taekwondo instructor, and couldn’t even afford a house.

Now she had this chance. She had to use it. With a function that made money this easy, who else deserved to be the richest?

She could already picture herself rolling around on a mountain of cash.

As she reached her door, she saw a yamen runner talking to Lin Qingyu, holding a cloth bag.

She didn’t have much to do with the county office, except with Ma Weiping. Had he sent this man?

“Sister, perfect timing. This officer brought something for us.”

The runner handed the bag to Lin Qinghuan and explained.

“His Honor knows your household is struggling, with children to feed. He ordered me to bring you some grain to get through the hard times.”

Lin Qinghuan’s heart warmed. She hadn’t expected Ma Weiping, busy as he was, to care about such small matters and send grain.

She didn’t need it now, but it was a kind gesture.

She accepted the grain. She’d repay him when she found the chance.

“Thank His Honor for me. He’s a true official who cares for the people.”

“I’ll pass on your words.”

Lin Qinghuan asked Lin Qingyu to see the runner out, while she took the bag into the kitchen to start dinner.

She put rice on to steam and began prepping the mixed goods for a spicy pot. It would save her from making dishes one by one.

As evening fell, the food was ready.

When she lifted the lid, the aroma burst out. She sprinkled some white sesame on top, making it look even better.

“Time to eat.”

She carried the dishes into the room. Da Bao and Xiao Bao came toddling over with bowls and chopsticks. Lin Qingyu was still busy in the yard.

Lin Qinghuan glanced over. He had fenced off a corner of the yard to keep the chicks inside. Otherwise, they’d leave droppings everywhere, and that wouldn’t be easy to deal with.
