Chapter 98: Unexpected Visit

Even with the meeting in progress, he couldn’t tear his gaze from his tablet. To other employees, it might have looked like he was reviewing documents, but in reality, he was watching the CCTV feed of his home. The meticulously installed cameras, leaving no blind spots, captured various angles of Seo-woo busily moving about the living room and Joon-hee spending time with her.

“Director.”

His secretary, standing behind him, called out to him, noticing his complete lack of focus. He briefly shifted his gaze forward, but it quickly returned to the screen.

Meanwhile, the employee presenting the PPT was delivering their final remarks. Only then did he lift his head and applaud the employee.

“Then, let’s conclude the meeting here.”

“Thank you for your hard work.”

Rising from his seat faster than anyone else, he exited the conference room. As a man with an already long stride, his hurried pace left his trailing secretary gasping for breath.

Upon returning to his office, he glanced at the clock, noting the time, and immediately began preparing to leave for the day.

It was barely past 2 PM, a time when he should still be at the office, but he casually disregarded such conventions.

“I’m leaving for the day.”

“D-Director, just a moment…”

Before his secretary could stop him, he stepped into the elevator that had just arrived. As he descended to the basement and headed towards his parked car, the phone in his pocket rang.

[Joon-hee]

Assuming it was an annoying call, he had initially scrunched his face in annoyance, but upon seeing Joon-hee’s name on the screen, a soft smile spread across his lips.

He pressed the call button and softly said, “Hello?” Joon-hee’s voice echoed from the other end.

–Jung, are you at the office?

“Hmm, no. I’m heading home.”

Though he hadn’t yet departed, it wasn’t a lie, as he would soon be leaving the company. Settling into the driver’s seat, he started the engine and continued his conversation with Joon-hee.

“Why? Did you call because you missed my voice?”

–No, it’s just…

The way he trailed off suggested he likely had a favor to ask. And it would probably be a request that would displease him.

“What is it? Tell me.”

Forcing a friendly tone, he tapped the steering wheel, awaiting Joon-hee’s next words.

What kind of favor could it be? After a long pause, Joon-hee finally spoke.

–Jae-hyun… can he come over to our place?

The moment that name was uttered, his pleasant mood swiftly plummeted. It was fortunate they were on the phone; if Joon-hee had been in front of him, his true expression would have been plainly visible.

He ran a hand over his face, trying to compose his emotions. After all, he always had to be the kind and gentle lover for Joon-hee.

“When?”

–Tomorrow.

“Hmm, tomorrow.”

Tomorrow was the weekend he had so eagerly awaited. He had endured the weekdays, day after day, solely for the thought of spending an entire day with Joon-hee, undisturbed.

‘Useless bastard.’

Strictly speaking, Yeon Jae-hyun was Yoo Seo-jin’s friend, not Joon-hee’s. Yet, Joon-hee was strangely soft when it came to Yeon Jae-hyun.

From the start, there was no way an Alpha clinging to an Omega could be a purely platonic friend, but the naive Joon-hee didn’t seem to consider that. After all, neither of them were Alphas or Omegas.

“Does it have to be tomorrow?”

–Jae-hyun said he’s leaving the country next week.

“Where to?”

–He’s going to America for a while.

‘Good. Don’t ever come back, for life.’ He wanted to say that, but held back and continued the conversation.

“For how long?”

–A month?

What was all this fuss for just a month-long trip? He wanted to argue that they could just meet after Jae-hyun returned from America, so why did it have to be tomorrow?

“You know tomorrow’s the weekend, right?”

–Yeah, that’s why Jae-hyun said he’s free.

It seemed he was the only one who had been looking forward to a weekend they could spend together all day. Sensing that saying anything more would only sour his mood further, he decided to conclude the conversation.

“Alright, I understand for now.”

–So, he can come tomorrow, right?

“Do as you wish.”

–Okay, thank you.

Hearing Joon-hee’s significantly brighter voice, he couldn’t even feel angry. ‘Well, a single day wouldn’t hurt, would it? Besides, I’ll be there, so nothing could possibly happen.’

“I’ll be there soon. See you later.”

–Okay, hurry.

Ending the call, he let out a deep sigh. He repeatedly gripped and released the steering wheel before slowly driving out of the parking garage.

“Seo-woo!”

Jae-hyun called out to Seo-woo, arms wide open. He scooped her up and gave her an airplane ride, eliciting joyful giggles from the excited child.

“Be careful, you’ll hurt her.”

“Don’t worry. You might not think it, but I’m quite seasoned from playing with my nieces and nephews.”

Jae-hyun confidently shrugged his shoulders and refocused on Seo-woo. Fortunately, the brightly smiling child showed no signs of discomfort.

“Our Seo-woo really takes after Seo-jin.”

Just as Jae-hyun said, Seo-woo was my spitting image. Even Seon Woo-jung, her other biological father, would jokingly ask if I had made the child all by myself.

“It’s a good thing she doesn’t resemble that b— no, *that person*.”

“Yeon Jae-hyun.”

“Sorry, I changed my words quickly, didn’t I?”

Jae-hyun quickly apologized and lifted Seo-woo high. Seeing him ignore me completely and focus solely on her, it seemed he had come just to see Seo-woo.

“Where’s Han Jung-woo?”

“He’s upstairs on the second floor right now.”

“What? He’s home?”

“Yeah, it’s the weekend.”

Jae-hyun, looking disgusted, scrunched up his face, which made Seo-woo begin to whimper. He quickly flashed a wide smile, and the child, mimicking him, also beamed.

“Then I guess I can’t stay long.”

“No, you can stay for dinner.”

“You want *me* to eat dinner face-to-face with Han Jung-woo?”

When I asked what could possibly be wrong with that, Jae-hyun quickly scanned his surroundings and leaned in close to me. Just as he was about to say something, a low voice abruptly interjected between us.

“Is there any particular reason why not?”

Having descended without us noticing, he naturally took Seo-woo, who was still in Jae-hyun’s arms. He kissed her plump cheek, then belatedly offered a greeting.

“It’s been a while, Mr. Yeon Jae-hyun.”

“Ah, it’s been a while for me as well—”

“No need to get up.”

He stopped Jae-hyun, who was flustered and trying to stand, and offered a faint smile. Jae-hyun, now meekly seated again, kept shooting me uncomfortable glances.

“You said you were off today.”

“I was, but I have to greet our guest.”

Bending down, he kissed my forehead and spoke tenderly. He subtly tried to press his lips against mine, only stopping when I gave him a pointed look, reminding him that Jae-hyun was right there.

“I’ll take Seo-woo, so you two spend some time together.”

“You really don’t have to….”

“It would probably be awkward to talk with a child present.”

Interrupting Jae-hyun abruptly, he carried Seo-woo upstairs to the second floor. Jae-hyun, who hadn’t taken his eyes off Seo-woo the entire time, let out a deep sigh.

“That bastard took Seo-woo on purpose.”

“Did he?”

It seemed like he had taken the child so the two of us could have a good time, but Jae-hyun apparently saw it differently. Glaring upstairs with clear displeasure, he then leaned back deeply into the sofa.

“Do you know how much I rearranged my schedule to be back before Seo-woo’s first birthday?”

“How touching.”

“Yeah, I said it to be touching.”

Jae-hyun, smiling widely as if nothing had happened, patted my shoulder. The atmosphere certainly relaxed after he went upstairs.

I wished the two of them could get along, but it seemed impossible.

Jae-hyun was a simple guy; he would easily open up if treated even slightly well, but the problem lay with Seon Woo-jung. He still seemed to suspect the relationship between Jae-hyun and Yoo Seo-jin.

‘They weren’t anything more than friends, though.’

While it was true Yoo Seo-jin had been quite promiscuous, Jae-hyun was an exception. He might have claimed that Alphas and Omegas couldn’t be just friends, but it was genuinely true in their case.

Strictly speaking, whatever had happened, it concerned Yoo Seo-jin, not me. If we started digging into the past, Han Jung-woo wouldn’t have much to say either.

‘I need to talk to him properly next time.’

It would be a long conversation, but his misunderstanding needed to be thoroughly cleared up. After all, Jae-hyun had become quite important to me, if not as much as Seon Woo-jung.

“What are you thinking about?”

“Just… that it’s good to see you after so long.”

“Why are you being like this, suddenly?”

A horrified Jae-hyun shivered. As he once said, Jae-hyun was Yoo Seo-jin’s connection, but he was also the only person who had consistently reached out to me after I possessed this body.

Of course, he had caused me a lot of trouble, but if Jae-hyun hadn’t stubbornly sought me out back then, I might still be drowning in alcohol. It was Jae-hyun who had pulled me from the depths of a gloomy ocean, allowing me to breathe again. Every time he chattered away, I, who had been parched, could finally smile.

“You’re staying for dinner, aren’t you?”

“I’ll have to give that some serious thought.”

“Why, because of Han Jung-woo?”

“Don’t ask if you already know.”
