Join the ServerFigures cloaked in grey robes slowly glided into the room. I couldn’t discern their faces, but from their agile steps and composed demeanor, I instantly recognized them as assassins.
The moment they appeared, Governor Sherlock’s expression turned grave.
“Who are you? What do you want? Money? I have plenty of that. Just tell me what you need, and—”
Before Governor Sherlock could finish his sentence, one of the grey-robed figures suddenly lunged. Like a swift shadow, the short blade in their hand shot like lightning towards his throat.
Clang—
The clash of metal resounded, sending sparks flying.
The grey-robed figure was forced back a few steps. Raven already stood before Governor Sherlock, their eyes as cold as ice.
Seeing this, Governor Sherlock’s lips curved into a confident smile.
“Heh heh, your target can’t possibly be my life, can it? If so, you’ll have quite a struggle ahead of you. My life is harder to take than a Golden Dragon!”
Before his words fully faded, a deep horn blast suddenly echoed from outside. It was long and drawn out, like a colossal beast roaring in the night, reverberating across the sea, seemingly transmitting a signal to the distance.
“Hahahaha! Did you hear that? It’s the signal from my fleet! In less than a minute, they’ll arrive and crush you little insects one by one!”
Governor Sherlock yelled excitedly, yet his body remained steadfastly behind Raven, not moving an inch.
The grey-robed figures exchanged glances. Then, one swiftly pulled a small, spherical object from their robes and hurled it at the ground.
The sphere shattered instantly, unleashing a dense cloud of white smoke that obscured all vision.
“Raven, protect me!” Governor Sherlock cried out nervously, daring not to make any rash moves.
Amidst the chaos, I felt a hand seize me, pulling me forcefully away from the swirling smoke.
I tried to look back, but I was firmly tugged along. The hand was not large, yet it was remarkably steady, conveying a warmth that cut through the cold sea breeze.
“Follow me. Don’t falter.”
A low female voice resonated in my ear.
I looked up at the grey-robed figure. Despite her deliberate attempt to lower her voice, I instantly recognized it.
“Miss Sharon?”
I gasped aloud.
“Can you swim?”
Miss Sharon offered no reply, merely repeating her question, a slight urgency in her tone.
“Uh, yes, a little…”
I answered with a touch of panic.
“Good. Hold on tight.”
Her tone brooked no argument.
“Eh? Hold on tight?”
“Hurry!”
Her voice urged me coldly.
Before I could react, my hands instinctively wrapped around her waist.
Her waist was not soft like most women’s; instead, it was firm and powerful, imbued with an unspoken strength. With each breath, I could feel the subtle rhythm of her body, every rise and fall revealing her battle-hardened physique.
“Ready? Jump!”
Sharon suddenly barked.
Before I could even respond, she held me tight, and together, we plunged into the icy seawater.
“Fire! Fire!”
Faint voices drifted from the surface of the water.
After leaping from Governor Sherlock’s colossal ship, Miss Sharon and I swam towards the shore.
The night sea was as cold as black ice, threatening to pierce every pore and claim my life. For my fragile body, enduring the swim to shore under such conditions seemed almost impossible.
However…
‘Hold on! The boss has already rescued that child!’
It was upon hearing Miss Sharon’s words mid-swim that a surge of strength coursed through me. I swam with desperate fervor, straining towards the shore.
‘I must, I must see that child again!’
“Governor, our guards arrived late. We apologize for your fright!”
Several military officers, dripping wet, knelt before me, heads bowed, their bodies trembling slightly.
Their cowering, fearful demeanor was utterly irritating.
I leaned lazily back in my chair, my gaze sweeping over the corpses and blood strewn across the deck, the surging fury in my heart refusing to subside.
Damn it. I never expected that imposter to have such a trick up their sleeve, daring to attack my ship. It seems I truly underestimated that fellow…
“What’s the situation on the ship? How many dead? How many assassins killed?”
My cold voice echoed in the air as I questioned them with dwindling patience.
“The fire has been extinguished, and the leaking cabins are temporarily sealed. The deceased… approximately forty people. Many are injured, and several critically wounded likely won’t survive.”
One of the officers answered cautiously.
“And the assassins? How many did you catch? Are there any left alive?”
My brow furrowed, my voice instantly rising.
The officers exchanged nervous glances. One trembled as they replied, “We… we didn’t catch any assassins. They all escaped. No one was left alive…”
“Useless!”
I shot to my feet, rage erupting from my chest like a blazing inferno. I savagely kicked the nearest officer directly in the face.
“I feed a bunch of good-for-nothings like you, and you can’t even catch an assassin! First, the assassination attempt at the Governor’s Mansion, and now on my *Golden Dragon*! Do you want me to die sooner so you can seize power?!”
I roared, punching and kicking, utterly unable to control my fury. Yet, after delivering several blows, my heart felt even more unsettled.
Anger, like a flood, overwhelmed my reason. In a fit of rage, I snatched the short sword from a nearby guard’s waist and brought it down fiercely towards the kneeling officer’s head.
Ping—
A crisp clang of metal rang out. The short sword in my hand was forcefully parried, flying from my grasp.
I looked up. A gleaming, cold blade was plunged into the deck before me. Its wielder was Raven.
“Raven?” I glared at him coldly, my eyes dark. “What is the meaning of this? Are you defying me as well?”
“Governor, please calm your anger.”
Raven remained expressionless, his gaze as indifferent as ever. He bent down, retrieved the dropped short sword, and steadily returned it to its sheath, his tone unhurried.
“However incompetent these men may be, they are still your subordinates. To harm them out of temporary anger is truly not worth it. Moreover, I believe this attack may not be as simple as we think.”
I stared intently into Raven’s eyes for a long moment. After confirming that he indeed seemed to have no intention of disobeying me, I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and forced myself to calm down.
“Everyone except Mr. Raven, get out.”
Faint, whimpering cries of fear scattered as I opened my eyes to find only Raven standing before me.
“Mr. Raven, what insights do you have?”
“No profound insights, but I find some matters to be too coincidental.”
“What do you mean?”
“Don’t you find it strange? Why did this attack happen so coincidentally just as Miss Lilian boarded the ship to report? And why did Miss Lilian vanish into thin air after the attack?”
I was not a slow-witted person and quickly grasped his meaning, a cold fury rising on my face.
“That demon child… actually dared to play me for a fool.”
“Governor, I believe we should now check the ship’s bottom deck. Perhaps that brat has already…”
“Heh heh heh… Heh heh heh heh, hahahahahaha!”
I suddenly burst into laughter, patting Raven’s shoulder and revealing my signature, smiling demeanor. “If that’s the case, then they… have simply wasted their efforts!”
