Chapter 52: Slaughter in the Dark

“Kill!”

Li Xiaobai roared, his right foot stomping hard as he shot ahead of the group. Facing twelve opponents without a shred of fear, he raised his black claw knife and Spider Stinger and charged.

“Who cares what kind of monster he is! Let’s all jump him! Cut him to pieces!”

“That’s right! Everyone together!” the Twin Blade Man bellowed.

With no choice but to stop watching, the twelve all raised their weapons and slashed at Li Xiaobai.

Li Xiaobai leaped up, spun, and swung the Spider Stinger in a horizontal arc toward the foremost Twin Blade Man.

The Twin Blade Man’s heart jumped at the black shadow rushing at him. But as the strongest of the group, he raised both blades to counter.

“Crack!”

The Spider Stinger and the twin sabers clashed in midair. The man was knocked backward, and one of his sabers snapped cleanly in two under the Stinger’s strike.

“What?” the giant shouted in shock.

Before Li Xiaobai landed, he kicked the man square in the face.

“Ah!” The foremost giant flew from the front of the pack to the back, hitting the ground and clutching his face as blood seeped through his fingers.

The remaining eleven stood frozen in terror.

But it wasn’t over. The moment Li Xiaobai’s first foot touched the ground, he charged the second man, raising his black claw knife and Spider Stinger for a killing blow.

“Kill!”

The man before him was an ordinary guy with a machete, but in Li Xiaobai’s eyes he was already dead. The man saw those sickly yellow snake pupils and his mind went blank. He swung a token slash at the monster…

That feeble swing sealed his fate.

Li Xiaobai blocked with his black claw knife and thrust the Spider Stinger forward, piercing the man’s heart precisely. The man’s eyes went wide, his hand went limp, and he spat blood as he stood there, dead.

But before Li Xiaobai could pull out the Spider Stinger, the Weatherbeaten Old Man lunged forward and brought a jump chop down onto Li Xiaobai’s back.

“Ah!”

Pain flared. Li Xiaobai howled and swiped the Spider Stinger blindly behind him, but hit nothing. The remaining ten had backed off, watching him with grim expressions.

“Xiaobai!” I saw the horrifying gash on his back.

He didn’t respond, completely focused on the standoff with the ten.

“Monster!”

“Monster?”

No kidding. In less than ten seconds, he’d taken down two. One dead, one crippled.

“What the hell are you?” the Weatherbeaten Old Man cried out. He knew best how hard he’d struck. To still be standing after a solid hit like that?

“What am I? Didn’t your buddy already answer?”

“I’m a monster.”

Finished speaking, Li Xiaobai gave them no time to react. He charged again, a wolf among sheep. He struck at anyone he reached and killed whoever he could.

“Aaaah!”

The Weatherbeaten Old Man slashed down at his face. Li Xiaobai didn’t dodge, just shifted slightly left and took the blade on his shoulder.

“Heart!”

The Spider Stinger shot out, aiming for the heart. The old man flinched, stepped back, and raised his blade to guard, but before the Stinger could land, Li Xiaobai’s hand moved like a phantom…

The black claw knife sank into the old man’s throat like an eagle’s talons. And the Spider Stinger abruptly changed direction and stabbed into the abdomen of the man beside him, who had raised a blade to strike.

“Aaaah!” the stabbed man screamed.

Li Xiaobai yanked out the black claw knife. Blood gushed from the old man’s throat. He clutched his neck, his eyes wide with disbelief as he died.

Gritting her teeth, the Glasses Woman hacked her blade viciously into Li Xiaobai’s chest.

“Ngh!” He glared at her.

“Ah!” she shrieked, stumbling back in fright, not even pulling the blade free. It stuck out of his chest.

Li Xiaobai grabbed the machete stuck in him and yanked it out, then thrust the Spider Stinger into the fallen man’s heart to finish the job.

His snake eyes fixed coldly on the Glasses Woman. Two more bodies lay at his feet.

“Hey! Get him!” the Glasses Woman yelled at the stunned men beside her.

“Roar!” Li Xiaobai charged, eyes locked on her.

This time he didn’t use his right hand’s black claw knife, didn’t use the machete he’d just pulled, and didn’t use the Spider Stinger. He pushed off the ground and launched himself into the air.

He opened his mouth wide and bit down on the Glasses Woman’s throat.

“Aaaah!”

“Crack!” He slammed her to the ground, tearing out her throat.

“Nn… ah…” She flailed limply, eyes bulging.

Blood streamed from Li Xiaobai’s mouth. His prey was dead in an instant. But he’d overextended and took several slashes to the back.

He rose fast, backstepped out of the encirclement, and returned to stand in front of me.

“…” I was speechless. Not just from his overwhelming strength, but from the deep cuts on his back.

He stood before me like a blood-soaked man, his own blood and that of others. In this short time, he’d killed five people.

“Huff… huff…” He just stood there panting, making no further move. Blood dripped steadily from him.

Seeing him like that, my heart ached.

Seven were left.

“Hey! He’s about done for!” someone said cautiously.

“That monster!” another shouted in fear.

“What do we do?”

“All together!” someone yelled.

“Right! He’s finished! Let’s get him!” The seven advanced together.

Li Xiaobai glared at them coldly, his expression unreadable. Finally, he raised his black claw knife and Spider Stinger, ready to fight.

“Xiaobai! No!” I cried, tears streaming.

“Don’t worry. I’ll protect you guys.” He ground out the words and, battered as he was, stepped forward.

No! He’ll die! But what could I do? The gun? I didn’t even know if it had bullets, and with my aim, could I hit anyone in a melee? But if I didn’t help, these people would hack him to death.

Light… dark… the lamp! Right, the lamp! I wiped my tears and looked up. The hall had two lights, no, fluorescent tubes.

One bright tube hung in the center. The other, like on other floors, was a flickering broken light. Li Xiaobai could sense where people were. So if I plunged the place into darkness again…

Hopefully the pistol still had bullets.

I grabbed the pistol, aimed at the tube on the ceiling, and pulled the trigger.

“Bang!” The shot echoed. The hall returned to darkness, except for the broken light flickering in the corner.

“Huh?” Li Xiaobai glanced at me, immediately understood, and vanished into the dark.

“What’s going on?”

“That girl fired?”

“What? Ah!” A scream rang out from the dark. By the flickering light, I saw Li Xiaobai behind someone, piercing his heart.

“It’s that monster!”

“Where is he?!” The group cried out, trying to spot him in the intermittent flashes.

“Thud.” Before they could find him, another body hit the floor. Silent, another death.

“Monster! Don’t kill me!” someone screamed in panic, breaking and fleeing in all directions.

“Everyone, don’t panic… ah!” A Spider Stinger punched through a man’s heart from behind.

“He’s over… ngh… ah…” A dark shape flashed, a throat was slit. Blood flooded out, and he could only watch himself bleed to death.

“Ah!” Another man was stabbed in the heart in the darkness.

“Hahahaha!” Li Xiaobai’s laughter echoed in the dark. He moved with the flickering light, slipping into blind spots, striking when the light flashed, hunting them down and breaking the minds of those still alive.

“Two left…”

In the darkness, Li Xiaobai stood behind one, grabbed his neck, and slashed his throat with the black claw knife.

“One left…” He tossed the body aside, his yellow snake eyes scanning for the last target.

“Stay back! Monster!” He didn’t bother hiding from the last man. He just stood coldly before him, because there was no need.

“No! Ah!” The Spider Stinger stabbed into his heart and twisted wildly in the dark.

“GAME OVER!”
