Chapter 35: The First Kill

“Donghui? Are you okay?” Xiaobai wanted to come and help me up.

I looked at the corpse on the ground and the cleaver in his hand, and in terror, I pushed him away.

“Huh?” Pushed away by me, Xiaobai could only look at me helplessly.

“See? I told you he’d be a hindrance, he’s scared shitless.” Mo Xiao’ai leaned against the wall and mocked.

“Weren’t you the one who was scared shitless last time?” Xiaobai yelled at her.

Mo Xiao’ai didn’t retort for once. Instead, she shuddered, covered her face with her hands, and said in a trembling voice, “You have no idea how terrifying that thing was…”

“Stop it. Hurry up and figure out what we do next.”

“What do you mean? Take the Time Reward and keep moving.” Mo Xiao’ai said coldly.

“That’s not what I meant. How do we comfort Donghui?” Xiaobai scratched his head.

“…” Mo Xiao’ai was silent.

“Uh… Donghui? Donghui? Can you stand up?” He tried again to help me up.

This time I didn’t push him away. Listlessly, I let him help me up silently, turning my head away, not wanting to see the corpse on the ground.

“What about that guy?” Xiaobai pointed at the office worker writhing on the ground.

“Please, don’t kill me…”

“Kill him.” Mo Xiao’ai said coldly.

“You do it?” Xiaobai asked.

“…” Mo Xiao’ai glared at him helplessly, took a step forward, and pressed the crossbow against the office worker’s head.

“Don’t kill me~ Please don’t kill me~” The office worker begged.

But Mo Xiao’ai didn’t pull the trigger. With a look of disgust at the pleading office worker, she glanced up at me, then suddenly lowered the crossbow and strode toward me.

She grabbed my collar and dragged me over.

“What are you doing?” I exclaimed.

“You kill him!” She shoved me to the ground and once again pressed the crossbow against the office worker’s head.

“…” I couldn’t speak.

“Hey! What do you think you’re doing!” Li Xiaobai shouted, trying to push Mo Xiao’ai away.

“If he can’t do it, I won’t share the Time Reward with him, and I’ll kill him right now. That’s good for him, for you, and for me. People like him, naive as he is, won’t last long anyway! They might even get others killed later! A painful death? Better I give you a quick one now!” Mo Xiao’ai shouted.

“That’s too much. I’ll do it.” Xiaobai silently approached with the cleaver and gently pushed Mo Xiao’ai aside.

“Stay out of this!” Mo Xiao’ai yelled.

At that moment, I was kneeling on the ground. I didn’t know what I was thinking. Mo Xiao’ai’s words plunged me into confusion. And in the end, although Xiaobai was trying to protect me, I could tell from his tone that he agreed with what Mo Xiao’ai said.

He wanted to help me, but deep down, he also saw me as a burden.

“Enough, no infighting.” Xiaobai pulled Mo Xiao’ai away and said in a low, commanding voice.

“He’s not even half a teammate!”

“I’ll do it…” I said.

“Uh… Actually, you don’t have to do this, Donghui.” Xiaobai was startled.

“…” Mo Xiao’ai said nothing, just stared at me coldly.

“I… said I’ll do it!” I shouted, silently pulling out the scissors I had just picked up.

“Donghui…”

Mo Xiao’ai didn’t speak. She shook off Xiaobai’s arm and once again aimed the crossbow at the office worker’s head.

I straddled the office worker’s chest and raised the scissors high…

“Don’t kill me! Please don’t kill me!” The office worker screamed in terror.

“I’m sorry…” It felt like tears were streaming down my face.

I gripped the scissors with both hands and thrust them straight into his heart!

“Aaaahhhh!” A scream, but it stopped after a moment.

“Hehehehehe~” The living people present just looked at me without speaking. The whole room was filled with my inexplicable laughter—whether I was laughing or crying, I didn’t know.

We left the ward and arrived at a fork in the road under the lights.

We had killed all three of them and split the Time Reward evenly. Each of us gained one hour plus an extra hour as a team bonus, totaling two hours.

The wristband showed 3 hours and 15 minutes remaining, and the game time had 23 hours and 15 minutes left.

“Bang!” “Bang!” “Bang!” Suddenly three explosions came from behind. Blood splattered violently out of the ward we had just left! The explosions were very quiet—much quieter than I had imagined.

“That’s the rule about corpses exploding after one minute, right?” Xiaobai asked.

“Want to go back and take a look?” Mo Xiao’ai said with a smirk.

“No… Donghui, are you okay?” He turned around and said to me.

I didn’t speak. My eyes lost focus, listless, my mind blank. I still clutched the bloodstained scissors tightly in my hand, silently following behind Xiaobai.

“Leave him alone. He’s already doing fine. This reaction for a first kill is already impressive. He’ll snap out of it in a bit.” Mo Xiao’ai gestured for us to hurry.

“I’m also a first-time killer…”

“Stop the nonsense, you monster, let’s go.”

“Donghui, stay close, don’t get lost.”

“Mm.” I could only utter a single syllable.

“…” Xiaobai said helplessly, “So… which way should we go?”

“Let’s go the opposite direction from that group. There shouldn’t be anything left to loot where they’ve been.” Mo Xiao’ai said.

“Then let’s go this way… Loot? Are you crazy from playing games?”

Li Xiaobai led us as we turned right and continued forward. He held a flashlight in his left hand and the cleaver in his right, no longer as cautious as at the beginning. Our pace quickened considerably.

At that moment…

My mind had cleared a bit. I finally realized what I had done…

I had killed someone.

I had killed an innocent person. Even now, I could still picture that person’s expression before death. The moment I thought of the feeling of the scissors piercing into human flesh, my hand gripping the scissors couldn’t help but tremble.

Kill or be killed—that was the rule of this game.

I calmed down much faster than I had imagined. Aside from the initial guilt, I found that I had already adapted.

A strange feeling arose in my heart? Guilt? Nausea? Discomfort? Moral terror? Fear? Remorse?

It was excitement! Even though I didn’t want to admit it.

My hand stopped trembling. I flicked the scissors in my hand and gripped them reversed.

Mo Xiao’ai coldly watched this scene. The look in this woman’s eyes changed. Heh, she remembered that when she killed for the first time, she had nightmares for a whole month.

“Freak.” She said in a voice only she could hear.

Soon, they reached a corner in the corridor.

“Bloodstains.” Xiaobai suddenly stopped and shone the flashlight ahead. We looked where he pointed.

There was a trail of blood on the floor, stretching to the other side of the corner, as if a corpse had been dragged. The blood was still fresh, as if left just moments ago.

Not only that, a strong smell of blood came from around the corner.

“Do you sense anyone?” Mo Xiao’ai asked Xiaobai coldly.

I really didn’t understand this. A supernatural ability? Why would this woman, who seemed to dislike Xiaobai at every turn, trust his intuition so much?

But it seemed they had quite a history.

“Too many injuries. My ability… intuition isn’t working well.” He pointed at the bandages on his body.

“…” Mo Xiao’ai was silent.

“…” I was also silent. Did you just say “ability”? How chuunibyou of you.

“Let’s go.” With that, he turned and walked around the corner.

As soon as he turned the corner and shone the flashlight, I instantly saw his face turn pale. He stepped back in terror, as if he had seen something unbelievable!

“Don’t look!” he shouted at us.

But it was too late; I had already stuck my head in…

A grotesque corpse. The female corpse had its limbs severed. The torso was placed in the middle of the passageway, with the limbs “standing” around it—feet where hands should be, hands where feet should be.

The head had been cut off and placed on the abdomen, while the bomb collar sat on top of the head like a crown.

It looked like some sort of cult ritual. Since the Time Reward hadn’t been taken, the bomb hadn’t exploded.

“Finders keepers.” That was the blood-written message on the wall.

Not only that, but ahead was the stairwell, which was the source of the overwhelming smell of blood! This might just be an appetizer.

“Cough, cough.” Mo Xiao’ai saw it and also turned pale. She immediately turned back and leaned against the wall, coughing.

Xiaobai covered my eyes with his hand.

“No need to cover them; I’ve already seen it.” I suppressed the nausea in my heart.

“Don’t look.” Hearing my words, Xiaobai was surely surprised by my tone, but he didn’t lower his hand from covering my face and pulled me back to the corner where the corpse wasn’t visible.

“Cough… which pervert did this?” Mo Xiao’ai leaned against the wall, coughing continuously.

“…” I didn’t know.

“Let’s take a detour.” Xiaobai said with a dark face.

I had changed…

The nausea in my heart, without my realizing it, had already been adapted to…
