Chapter 12: The Rooftop Office

After only one day of school, I took three days off to recover from my injuries at home.

Heh, I guess I’m the only one in the whole school who’s done that.

“Hmm… even my hand, cut in half, can heal. Looks like I’m really not ordinary anymore.” I muttered to myself as I walked toward the classroom.

“Ah! Brother Xiaobai! You finally came to school!” As soon as I stepped through the door, I saw Lin Xiaopang walking toward me.

“Uh, Fatty? Did you take the wrong medicine?” I asked.

“Brother Xiaobai, my admiration for you is like an endless river, flowing continuously…” Fatty said with a sly grin, looking utterly insufferable.

“Stop! Fatty, can you speak like a normal person?”

“Brother Xiaobai, don’t you know what’s happened these past few days?”

“Isn’t that obvious? I was on leave, wasn’t I?” I gave him a contemptuous look and continued walking to my seat.

“It’s all about you.” Fatty smirked.

“Huh?” I turned my head in surprise.

“First day: late, flirted with the school beauty senior, beat up seven seniors, and bullied the new female homeroom teacher.” Fatty laughed.

“What the heck?” This time I was truly shocked.

“Xiaobai, you’re now the talk of the town in the Art and Education departments.” Zhao Jianwen, the sunny boy sitting nearby, teased me with a smile.

“What!” I turned to Jianwen in shock.

“Hey, Brother Xiaobai, no need to be so happy. Show some expression.” Fatty said cheekily.

“I’ll slap your fat face! What do you mean I flirted with the school beauty? Do you have no brains? She’s the karate club captain! Flirting with her would get me killed! And what’s this about beating up seven seniors in one day? Who the hell counted them? And half of those were you guys! Finally, what’s this about bullying the new teacher? That’s outright framing me!” I ranted angrily.

“On the first day, you left early, then skipped school for three days. Isn’t that bullying young Teacher Bei Ying?”

“Tch, I bet you spread that rumor, you fat slob. I had a leave! Watch me beat you to death!”

“No, Brother Xiaobai! Last time, you made someone cough up blood with one punch. Look at my skinny frame—one punch from you would kill me! And save your strength. Most guys in school, especially from the Education department, see you as a mortal enemy. Plus, Ye Ying’s fan club? There are plenty who hate you!”

“And it’s all your fault for spreading rumors! Skinny frame? That fat of yours has enough defense to take two punches before dying.”

“Xiaobai, Xiaopang, stop messing around. The teacher’s here.” Zhao Jianwen said with a smile. As he spoke, we saw the teacher walk in.

“You’re lucky, Fatty. After class, you’re dead meat.” I pointed at Xiaopang threateningly.

“We’ll see.” Xiaopang retorted.

“Ding-ding! Ding-ding!” The bell rang for the end of class.

“Class dismissed. See you next time, everyone.” The old professor left without so much as a breeze.

The professor wasn’t the only one to bolt. As soon as the bell rang, Lin Xiaopang got up and ran out of the classroom.

“Fatty, stop right there!” By the time I reacted, he was already gone. I immediately wanted to chase after him.

But as I took two steps, I saw Xiaopang walking back in.

“Heh, Fatty, changed your mind and decided to come back for a beating?” I sneered.

“Xiaobai, someone’s looking for you.” He said seriously.

“No one can stop me from beating you up!”

“Hehe, Junior Xiaobai, who do you want to beat up?” Suddenly, Ye Ying appeared from behind Xiaopang.

“Senior Ye Ying is looking for you.” Xiaopang repeated, with a jealous look in his eyes.

“Senior Ye Ying! Where?” said a passerby A.

“The school beauty!” said passerby B.

“There she is! Ah, she’s looking for that guy again. Didn’t he flirt with her?” Male student Xie Pai said angrily.

“Calm down, Xie Pai, take it easy.” Then classmates A and B dragged the furious Xie Pai out of the classroom.

“Class is over. Would you like to go for a walk with me, junior?” Ye Ying smiled at me.

“Can I say no…?” I asked.

“No.”

“Alright, I’ll go with you.”

With that, I followed Senior Ye Ying out of the classroom. Sigh, I could already imagine the rumors growing tomorrow. The Education department guys would definitely flip out.

Ye Ying walked ahead, and I followed slowly step by step.

“Ye Ying?” I said.

“Call me senior!” She replied coolly without turning around.

“Senior Ye Ying, we’ve reached the school gate. Where are we going?” As expected, when fewer people were around, her attitude changed.

“We’re going to the office now.”

“Senior, I still have class later.” I whined.

“Heh, what do I care? I don’t have class.”

“Senior, at this rate, I feel like the Education department guys will beat me to death, and I’ll get expelled.” I gave a bitter laugh.

“No, you won’t. You’d have to skip at least two hundred classes to get expelled.” She laughed.

“…” Such sound logic left me speechless.

“Didn’t I tell you to come find me as soon as your injuries healed?”

“I was shot three times, and my whole hand was cut in half. I think it’s amazing I recovered in just three days.” Now I understood why she was hiding such anger.

“That day, I kicked that non-mainstream guy in half. Impressive, right? Want to try?”

“Okay, fine, I’m sorry, I was wrong.” My heart was shattered.

“We’re here.” She led me to an apartment building, not far from the school—just a short walk away.

“Here?” I followed her, looking left and right. All the apartments looked the same; there was no sign of an office. Though I still had no idea what her “office” was for.

“This one.” She said, then entered one of the apartments.

“Oh, oh.” I hurried up the stairs after her, glancing at the building number: “18, got it.”

I followed behind her. This time, like last time, she wore fitted pants and heels, but a T-shirt instead. I had to admit she had a great figure.

“What are you looking at?” I was so focused that I didn’t notice Ye Ying had turned around and was staring at me.

“Nothing. I was just wondering where your office is.” I said calmly. We’d climbed five or six floors already. Was the office inside an apartment?

“It’s on the rooftop.” She continued walking.

“Oh.”

At the rooftop, she took out a key, unlocked the door, and gently pushed it open. Very different from her violent door-opening at school last time.

I followed her in, pushing the half-open door.

Inside, I saw a two-story tall house built on the rooftop. The entire roof was paved with smooth tiles, and there were many potted plants—even a tree. Most incredibly, there was a glass transparent corridor. Truly artistic.

“This… is this a so-called illegal construction?” I marveled as I followed her toward the house.

“Come inside.”

“Wu You Wu… Office.” I saw a sign beside the entrance. It wasn’t hung on the door but placed against the wall.

“Stop looking and come in quick!” Ye Ying’s voice came from inside.

“Oh.”

Inside, I found not only Ye Ying but also a woman and a child.

“Miss, class ended so quickly?” The woman said.

“Mm.”

“Your dad’s inside. I’m about to go grocery shopping.”

“Go ahead, Sister Wan.”

“Hmm? And who’s this?”

The speaker was a woman around twenty-six, conservatively dressed and very ladylike, with her hair up. Not exactly beautiful, but she had a gentle and considerate aura—a typical older sister or wife type.

She held a little girl by the hand, cute, hiding behind the woman and staring at me.

“This? He’s my classmate, and our new companion.” Ye Ying pointed at me and said to the woman.

“Hello, I’m Chen Xiyuan. This girl is Ye Xian’er. From now on, we’re family.” Chen Xiyuan pointed at the little girl and smiled at me.

“Hello, hello, Sister Xiyuan. I’m Li Xiaobai. Nice to meet you.”

“Xian’er, say hello.” Chen Xiyuan tugged the little girl.

“Hello, big brother.” She whispered from behind Chen Xiyuan.

“Hello, hello.”

“Sister Wan, you two go ahead. We have things to discuss.” Ye Ying said to Chen Xiyuan.

“Alright, we’ll go shopping. Take your time.” With that, she led the little girl Xian’er off the rooftop.

Watching them leave, I asked Ye Ying, “Are they… like us?”

“Xiyuan is a New Breed. Xian’er is my kind.”

“Oh…” So they really were. Such a young girl.
