Chapter 34: Weapons and Ambush

I was about to help them search when I realized they had already checked every inch of the eight hospital beds, including underneath them.

Well, no choice. I could only look around the corner near the entrance.

I kicked at the piles of old documents scattered on the floor. But then—I actually kicked something. Something was wedged between some papers. I crouched down and lifted the top layer.

A pair of scissors. (Legendary weapon acquired.)

I picked them up. Brand new. Obviously left here deliberately. So this must be the weapon the bomb murderer mentioned.

Meanwhile, Li Xiaobai and Mo Xiao’ai had finished checking every nook and cranny of the ward.

“Find anything?”

“A flashlight…” Mo Xiao’ai had actually found a flashlight! And the flashlight in her hand was thick and black—you could knock someone out with it.

“I found a pair of scissors.” I held them out for them to see.

“Whoa, why do you guys get all the good stuff?” Xiaobai was stunned, amazed.

“Hm? Xiaobai, what did you find?”

“A steel pipe.” He pulled an iron rod from behind his back.

Uh… that probably couldn’t be called a steel pipe. First off, the material was different. And it was only about as thick as a thumb. Plus, it looked kind of familiar…

“Ha, isn’t that the bed leg you just took off?” Mo Xiao’ai teased.

“Don’t waste words. Give me the flashlight. Donghui, keep the scissors for self-defense.” Xiaobai snatched the flashlight from Mo Xiao’ai’s hand, then handed her the iron rod.

“So thick…” He examined the flashlight with satisfaction, while Mo Xiao’ai glared at the iron rod in her hand.

“Donghui, look how thick this is.” He handed me the flashlight.

“Uh…” Such vulgar words—how was I supposed to respond?

I took the flashlight, found the switch, and turned it on. Instantly, the whole ward lit up.

“Bright enough!” Xiaobai praised.

“Yeah.”

“Two idiots,” Mo Xiao’ai sneered.

Suddenly, Xiaobai grabbed my hand!

“What’s wrong?” Was he having another pervy thought?

But he just silently turned off the flashlight in my hand and took it back. Then he whispered to us, “Someone’s coming.”

“Huh!?” Xiao’ai was startled.

“What?” I was startled too.

“Twenty meters to the left at the end of the corridor, three people. They’re heading our way, but I don’t know if they’ll keep straight or come toward us,” he continued in a low voice.

“How do you know—”

“What should we do?” Before I could finish, Mo Xiao’ai cut in.

“We could go talk to them first,” I said.

“…,” After I spoke, Mo Xiao’ai gave me a look like I was an idiot. Then she said to Xiaobai, “We have the advantage of surprise. If we ambush them, we can take them out easily.”

“What? We should—”

“Shut up! Sissy!” Mo Xiao’ai snapped at me.

“You!”

“Shh! Both of you stop arguing! How about this: we hide first and see how things go,” Xiaobai shushed us, offering a suggestion.

“Fine.”

“…” Mo Xiao’ai said nothing, just nodded.

“Let’s hide in this room for now.”

Hearing that, Mo Xiao’ai didn’t react much. She ducked behind a bed near the back of the ward and set up her crossbow, aiming at the door. She really looked like she wanted to kill.

“They’re at the corner. Let’s hide too,” Xiaobai said to me.

“Okay.” I followed him to hide beside the bed next to Mo Xiao’ai.

He made me crouch against the wall, while he and Mo Xiao’ai took positions on either side of the bed’s foot, peeking out.

“Don’t do anything. Just protect yourself and stay hidden,” he whispered to me.

I wanted to say something, but even I could hear voices from outside now.

“Damn it, what the hell is this place?” A rough middle-aged man’s voice shouted.

“Boss, looks like a hospital,” another rough male voice, but younger.

“Idiot! You think I can’t see that? Hey, office worker, hurry up! Or I’ll cut you down!” The rough middle-aged voice again.

“Wait for me! Oh my god, what’s going on?” A weak middle-aged man’s voice.

“Hey! Office worker, shut up! Quiet!” The rough young voice yelled. “Hey, boss, is that that murdering maniac’s doing?”

“What? You scared?” The rough middle-aged man sneered. “f*ck, I thought I’d have some fun with a drunk woman, but instead I run into this shit!”

“Hehe, hope we run into a woman so we can really have some fun! And with the boss here, who’s stronger than you? Killing a few people to get through this shouldn’t be hard.”

“Do we really have to kill?” the office worker asked.

“Hah, lucky for you. If you weren’t my teammate, I’d have cut you down already!” the rough middle-aged man shouted.

Outside, the sound of metal hitting the wall. So they had blades.

“Boss, there’s a room over here. Let’s check it out!” the rough young man shouted.

Footsteps heading our way!

My heart raced. They were coming toward us! I nervously tugged at Xiaobai’s clothes. He just made a reassuring gesture.

“Don’t worry, we can handle it,” he whispered, then continued peeking toward the door. I also cautiously peered out.

I could barely see three men walking in. Two were quite burly, dressed like biker delinquents. The third was much thinner, a suit—must be the office worker they mentioned.

“Hey! Check thoroughly for anything useful! Hey, office worker, you too!” the rough middle-aged man ordered.

“Didn’t we hear sounds from here just now?” the office worker said.

Then they began searching.

Since we were hiding behind the far bed and it was very dark, they couldn’t spot us immediately, but I figured it was only a matter of time.

Nervously, I tugged at Xiaobai’s clothes again. He just nodded at me. I could see his expression had changed—this was the serious Xiaobai.

He then quickly turned to look at Mo Xiao’ai. She was looking back at us, as if waiting for a signal.

In the darkness, Mo Xiao’ai held up one finger.

I didn’t know what that meant. But Xiaobai seemed to understand. He nodded and reached out a hand to her.

Now it was Mo Xiao’ai’s turn to look confused, her expression helpless.

Xiaobai suddenly waved his hand at her, making a striking gesture. This time I kind of got it… he was asking for that iron rod.

Mo Xiao’ai’s expression grew even more helpless, then she tossed the iron rod over.

Xiaobai caught it soundlessly. Then he made a ‘be quiet’ gesture to me.

I nodded.

He held up three fingers toward Mo Xiao’ai.

Two.

One. I suddenly realized they were about to act!

All fingers down. Action!

At the signal, Mo Xiao’ai leaped up, raised her crossbow, and shot an arrow into the darkness! At the same time, Li Xiaobai vaulted over the bed and disappeared into the dark…

What was this? I was completely confused. I had no idea what just happened. Those two guys were pretty strong, and they had knives! Xiaobai only had that iron rod!

I couldn’t help worrying for him…

“Aaaah!” Suddenly, a scream and the sound of bone breaking came from the darkness!

I jumped in fright! Calming down, I could tell that scream belonged to the office worker, not Li Xiaobai.

Then a white light lit up the whole ward. It was Xiaobai’s flashlight.

“It’s safe now. Come out.” Xiaobai’s voice followed.

I saw Mo Xiao’ai squinting in the light, then she walked out. Well, I might as well follow. I stood up and headed toward them.

But as soon as I took a step and saw the scene clearly, I froze.

Terrified!

Silently, two corpses lay on the floor. The two bikers.

The younger one had a black arrow stuck in his forehead, dead center. His face still wore a slight smile, as if he hadn’t even had time to react or feel pain before dying. The older one lay not far away, his throat pierced clean through by an iron rod. His expression was pained and bewildered; he couldn’t make a sound, forced to watch himself bleed to death, powerless.

Blood from the older biker pooled on the floor…

And the office worker wasn’t dead, but his entire left leg seemed broken. He writhed in agony on the ground.

Li Xiaobai and Mo Xiao’ai showed no change in expression, as if they had done something trivial.

Mo Xiao’ai pulled the arrow out of the corpse, wiped the blood on its clothes, and reloaded her crossbow. Xiaobai picked up one of the machetes from the floor, examined it carefully, and seemed satisfied with its weight.

“You guys!?” My voice trembled. My legs gave way, and I crouched on the ground, pointing at them, but no words came out.
