The evening wind carried a sweltering heat, mingling the cumin scent of grilled skewers, the sweet aroma of roasted chestnuts, and the pungent kick of sour-spicy noodles, all rising from the street.
Tang Yunle and Tang Yunke walked arm in arm, their white and black silk skirts swaying with each step, like two blooming lotuses side by side, drawing a few extra glances from passersby.
“Sister, this smells delicious!”
“And it tastes even better! Extra spicy, please!”
“My brother-in-law’s hometown snack street is awesome!”
“Mommy, I want that big phoenix sugar figurine!”
The sisters, munching on freshly grilled squid with greasy mouths, heard the expectant, obedient voice and turned curiously.
At the entrance of the street, two figures stood before a sugar figurine stall.
One tall, one small.
The tall one wore a caramel-colored suit dress, her fiery red hair cascading to her waist, a few loose strands framing her ears and accentuating her sharp, bright eyes of the same hue. Her mature, capable outfit was tinged with a wildness from that red hair.
The young girl beside her also had long hair reaching her waist, about sixteen or seventeen, much shorter than the woman beside her. Their features were seven or eight out of ten similar, clearly mother and daughter at first glance.
But the most striking thing was her eyes—one fiery red, one icy blue, like two extremes perfectly harmonized.
Almost simultaneously, the mother-daughter pair sensed the gaze and turned their heads.
Eyes met, and the air seemed to freeze for half a second.
“Little Yin did a divination for me before I left,” Qi Sui’an said, tilting her head toward the two women. “She said I’d meet a kindred spirit while shopping today.”
“The same soul, yet two different ways of thinking.”
Tang Yunke, still holding her sister’s arm, sniffed the air and frowned slightly.
At that, Qi Sui’an curled her lips, her red eyes scanning Tang Yunle and Tang Yunke’s faces before she smiled. “This street is noisy; not the best place for discussion. If you don’t mind, would the two of you join me and my mother for some tea at the teahouse ahead?”
Tang Yunle rubbed the napkin she had used to wipe off grease. Tang Yunke nudged her arm first. The sisters exchanged a glance, as if communicating a thousand words.
“Fine,” Tang Yunle nodded. “We’ve had enough street food and were just looking for a place to rest.”
Tang Yunke chimed in with a smile, “No objections here. We’ve got nothing better to do, and my woman’s intuition tells me that meeting you today means my sister and I are in for some good luck!”
The teahouse sat at the end of the little street, its antique wooden structure filled with the fragrance of Longjing tea.
Qi Sui’an chose a seat by the window. Qi Sui pulled out a chair and sat down, her caramel-colored skirt brushing against the seat with a soft rustle.
Tang Yunle and Tang Yunke sat opposite them. The setting sun slanted in, casting interlaced shadows among the four.
The server brought a plate of osmanthus cakes and a plate of mung bean crisps, filled four white porcelain cups with tea, and quietly withdrew, leaving only the occasional bubble of boiling water in the kettle.
Qi Sui’an took a sip of tea, her gaze first resting on Tang Yunke, then shifting to Tang Yunle.
“Praise the Vine Monster God! Ateng.” She clasped her hands in a prayer gesture, then winked at the two women suggestively.
Tang Yunle: ???
Seeing no response and only confused looks, Qi Sui’an repeated what she had just said.
Tang Yunle remained equally bewildered.
“The secret code, sis! The secret code!” Seeing that Tang Yunle didn’t catch on, Qi Sui’an had to prompt again. “You mean you haven’t met a little boy in a green robe?”
Tang Yunle: …
No green-robed little boy, but she had recently encountered a little boy in a blue striped robe while visiting Zhang Junfang for a medical checkup.
Still, what kind of new deity was this Vine Monster God, related to the Flying Spaghetti Monster?
She cast a faint glance at the other’s clear, bright eyes and tried probing. “More reading and more newspapers, less snacking and more sleeping?”
“Wrong.”
“Then have you ever talked big online?”
“Mm… no, but I have scammed people online.”
“I see.”
Qi Sui’an looked disappointed.
“Then let me get straight to the point.” She paused, her gaze direct. “Are you two also ‘niangs’?”
Tang Yunke was holding a piece of osmanthus cake to her mouth; she paused at the question, chewed, and said, “My sister is, but I’m not really.”
She introduced herself. “My name is Tang Yunke.” She pointed to her sister beside her. “This is my sister, Tang Yunle. She’s a niang, already has a husband.”
Tang Yunle nodded in agreement.
Qi Sui’an raised an eyebrow, set down her cup, and also introduced herself. “My name is Qi Sui’an.”
She looked at the red-haired mature woman beside her, her tone turning serious. “And this is my mother, Qi Sui, also my father’s wife.”
Qi Sui didn’t say much, just quietly watched the opposite side with her red eyes, so similar to her daughter’s. At the introduction, she gave a slight nod, her composed yet wild aura making the air seem to tighten.
Tang Yunke’s gaze shifted between Qi Sui’an and Qi Sui. She tapped her fingers on the table. “It’s not unusual for mother and daughter to look alike, but you two share the same soul, yet have completely different ways of thinking.”
Qi Sui’an raised her eyes, a glint of interest flashing in her red ones. “My martial instinct tells me that you and your sister are about the same. Ninety-nine percent, no, nearly a hundred percent similar. But you’re not human—more like a creature attached to her, sharing her fortunes.”
“You seem to have many stories.”
“You too, seem to have many stories as well.”
“We have snacks here, and the tea is still hot. No rush; we can take our time talking.” Qi Sui picked up her cup and took a sip.
Tang Yunke glanced at Tang Yunle beside her. Seeing her give a slight nod, she turned back to the pair. “My intuition tells me you’re trustworthy.”
She paused, then asked bluntly, “So, who goes first? You or my sister and I?”
Qi Sui’an and Qi Sui exchanged a look, then spoke in unison: “We’ll go first.”
As the words fell, a silent understanding seemed to flow between them, their movements even matching in sync. At that moment, they didn’t seem like mother and daughter, but like the same person inhabiting two different bodies.
Qi Sui’an leaned back in her chair, while Qi Sui gently set her cup back on the saucer with a soft ‘click.’
“Our story begins with a transmigration…”
A journey into a nearly cyberpunk world, a young martial arts enthusiast, a brutal martial city, three megacorporations, and her cousin by her side.
As the two women narrated, a breathtaking tale of adventure in another world gradually took shape in the minds of the sisters, Tang Yunle and Tang Yunke.
From overthrowing the martial city, to being betrayed by the three megacorporations and nearly dying, to having part of their soul and mind rescued by their cousin at the cost of near amnesia, and then being raised as a daughter by that cousin due to his unspoken desires.
Later, the three megacorporations returned, and their corpse was transformed into a biochemical machine. As the daughter, she was used by the megacorporations, dragging her cousin into trouble until the critical moment, when her memories and strength recovered.
Afterward, having regained his memories, he faced the choice between being a man and a woman. Through a series of events, big and small, he was successfully won over by his cousin.
And when it came time to choose which identity to keep, the fact that a single soul now had two bodies made the decision. So he embraced both identities and began to live immersively as a mother and daughter pair.
The two women told every detail, one after the other, painting a vivid and exhaustive picture.
