Chapter 12: Good Baby

Lu Yiyi stood not far away, her eyes suddenly stinging.

Those sandwiches were the product of nearly an hour of effort in the kitchen.

No wonder Miss Xia had been so angry.

Anyone with even a good temper would be furious to see their thoughtful gesture thrown into the trash.

Wang Li had gone too far.

Miss Xia was already pitiful, locked up down here. The loving breakfast she had finally received had been ruined like this.

She actually treasured other people’s kindness.

Even a few ordinary sandwiches, she would pick out of the trash herself and wipe clean.

Lu Yiyi sniffled, tears welling up in her eyes.

She felt a pang of heartache.

That extremely dangerous calamity-level spirit master, in her eyes, had become a pitiful little thing who had been wronged and was hiding in a corner eating picked-up food.

“Miss Xia…”

A soft voice sounded in the empty corridor.

The crouching figure stopped.

Xia Qimeng turned around woodenly.

Under the dark red emergency light, there was no expression on that peerlessly beautiful face. In her black-and-colored eyes, a tangled mass of dark threads that couldn’t be unraveled was wrapped together.

But when she saw the small figure at the elevator entrance, a star was thrown into the black hole in her eyes.

The deathly aura dissipated, and the violent tide of paranormal power slowly receded in her body.

“You’re here, Yiyi.”

Xia Qimeng rose, holding the insulated lunchbox in her hands. Her voice was hoarse, the end of her words trembling slightly.

Lu Yiyi couldn’t hold it in anymore. She broke into a run and threw herself at her, completely forgetting that this person had cut a living person into pieces just a dozen minutes ago.

She only saw a pitiful sister who needed comfort.

“I’m sorry.” She hugged Xia Qimeng’s waist, her voice muffled. “I’m late.”

Xia Qimeng was knocked back half a step.

She lowered her lashes, looked at the furry little head in her arms, and her gaze cleared.

As long as this little one was by her side, she could control the paranormal power in her body.

How amazing.

That familiar milky fragrance filled her nose again.

Her empty heart was filled.

Xia Qimeng raised a hand, wanting to stroke Lu Yiyi’s hair, but remembering that her fingertips still carried dust from rummaging through the trash, she simply left her hand hanging in midair, fingers slightly curled.

“It’s okay.” Her voice returned to its usual clear and bright tone, carrying that unique rhythm that bewitched people. “As long as you’re here, it’s not late.”

Lu Yiyi buried her face in the pink gauze skirt and rubbed against it.

“That woman said you had been transferred away.”

Xia Qimeng’s tone was calm, holding the pink lunchbox tightly to her chest, very possessive of her food.

“She said that she would be in charge of me from now on.”

Lu Yiyi raised her head from her arms, her big eyes misty with tears, and hurriedly explained.

“It was because the supervisor saw that I hadn’t undergone training and didn’t meet the requirements, so he transferred the task to her. I gave her the sandwiches and asked her to bring them to you, and also asked her to explain for me…”

Looking at the dirty lunchbox in Xia Qimeng’s hand, she felt even more guilty.

“Who knew she didn’t explain for me… and even threw my sandwiches away.”

“Mm.” Xia Qimeng smiled and nodded. “She’s a very, very bad person, and she also said bad things about you to me.”

She leaned down, resting her chin on Yiyi’s shoulder, her voice sounding aggrieved.

“So, I taught her a small lesson for you.”

When Lu Yiyi heard the word “lesson,” the image of Wang Li’s horrifying scored body flashed through her mind.

Her body trembled.

She was a little afraid, but more than that, there was an indescribable warmth.

A calamity-level spirit master who could cut people into pieces would actually crouch by the trash can, rummaging for a few sandwiches she had made.

Wang Li had thrown her heartfelt gesture into the trash and came to provoke a mentally unstable patient. She deserved to be killed.

Miss Xia was just sick. She couldn’t control herself.

It wasn’t Miss Xia who was wrong. It was Wang Li, who couldn’t even respect others.

“I’m sorry, Miss Xia, it’s all my fault.” Lu Yiyi sniffled, hanging her head in guilt. “If I had insisted on coming down, none of this would have happened.”

‘If I had come earlier, Miss Xia wouldn’t have been wronged, nor lost control.’

‘In the end, I was too weak and didn’t dare refuse the supervisor’s arrangement.’

“Why are you apologizing again, my good little baby.”

Xia Qimeng tilted her head, her lips brushing past Lu Yiyi’s ear as if by accident, warm breath hitting that delicate skin.

The rich floral fragrance wrapped around Lu Yiyi again, soothing her tense nerves.

“It’s their fault. There’s not a single good person in the Paranormal Bureau. They can’t stand beautiful things and always want to separate us.”

“That woman dirtied the things you gave me and wanted to replace you. She deserved to die.”

Above their heads, the emergency red light was still flashing. The piercing sirens were still howling in the empty underground level seventeen.

“Annoying.”

Xia Qimeng frowned.

As her voice fell, the loudspeaker at the end of the corridor let out a harsh static buzz and went completely dead.

The alternating flashing red emergency lights stopped, frozen into a steady dim light.

“Let’s go back to the room.”

Xia Qimeng held the pink lunchbox in one hand and extended the other toward Lu Yiyi.

Her fingertips had barely reached out halfway when they stopped in midair.

She had just rummaged through the trash, her fingers dusty, with dirt under the nails.

Too dirty. Yiyi would dislike it.

The light in Xia Qimeng’s eyes dimmed. She curled her fingers and was about to put her hand down.

A warm, soft little hand reached over.

Lu Yiyi didn’t mind the stains. She took the initiative to grasp Xia Qimeng’s hand, spreading her fingers and naturally slipping them into the gaps between the other’s.

Ten fingers interlocked, palms pressed together.

Xia Qimeng was frozen in place.

She stared blankly at their clasped hands.

The last person who had taken her hand like that was her mother.

This little rabbit, she didn’t mind her at all. Instead, she actively took the hand of a monster.

Xia Qimeng was lost for a moment. Then a smile bloomed at the corners of her lips.

More gentle and satisfied than ever.

The two walked back to the special containment room hand in hand.

Everything in the room was as before.

On the rosewood desk sat a plate of delicate cookies, and beside it a pot of black tea steaming with hot air.

The aroma of tea curled upward, cozy like an aristocratic afternoon tea.

After entering, Xia Qimeng first walked to the washbasin in the corner, turned on the tap, squeezed hand soap, and carefully scrubbed every finger.

She washed them a full three times, dried them with a towel, and only then sat back down at the desk.

The pink lunchbox was placed in the center of the desk.

Opening the lid, the sandwiches had not yet gone cold.

Xia Qimeng picked one up, brought it to her lips, took a small bite, and chewed very slowly, very seriously.

“Delicious.” She swallowed and curved her eyes. “The things Yiyi makes… have a nostalgic taste.”

Lu Yiyi’s cheeks flushed at the praise.

She pulled a chair over, sat down, propped her cheeks in her hands, and quietly watched Xia Qimeng eat.

A dignified calamity-level spirit master, being this happy eating a sandwich someone had thrown away.

‘She must have suffered so much.’

“Don’t pick things out of the trash anymore.” Lu Yiyi muttered softly, with a hint of petulant coaxing she hadn’t even noticed herself. “If it’s dirty, you’ll get a stomachache.”

“If you like them, I’ll make you fresh ones tomorrow. You can eat whatever you want. I’ll go learn how to make it.”

Xia Qimeng paused for a moment while eating.

She raised her head, looking directly into Lu Yiyi’s eyes.

In those black-and-colored eyes was a shocking fervor, but she perfectly concealed it beneath her gentle appearance.

“Okay.” She agreed crisply.
