Join the ServerLu Yiyi’s hand trembled, almost dropping the mouse.
“Dead?”
Her eyes went wide.
“Wasn’t she fine when we left yesterday?”
Li Qian glanced around, lowering her voice further.
“She was found last night. Apparently she went crazy on her way home.”
“How did she go crazy?”
“She got to the intersection on Changming Street, then suddenly lunged at the cement utility pole on the roadside, hugged it, and started gnawing on it.”
Li Qian described it vividly.
“She shattered all her teeth, swallowing them mixed with blood and flesh. She gnawed until the ground was covered in blood, and nobody could pull her off.”
Lu Yiyi’s scalp went numb.
Last night’s pizza churned in her stomach.
“That’s not all.”
Li Qian clicked her tongue.
“After gnawing the pole, she ran into the middle of the road, faced a big truck coming her way, jumped up, and delivered an elbow strike to the front of the truck!”
Lu Yiyi was stunned.
Elbow strike on a truck?
Man!
“And then?”
“Then she went to enjoy her blessings.”
Li Qian spread her hands.
“Her body got dragged under the truck for over ten meters. The forensics team spent half an hour scraping her off the road with shovels before they could piece her together. I heard you couldn’t even recognize her as human.”
Lu Yiyi sat at her workstation, her face pale.
She secretly glanced at Sister Zhang’s empty seat.
She was truly scared, but deep down, there was also a secret sense of satisfaction.
It wasn’t nice to think that way, but for the past five days, Sister Zhang had treated her like a maid, and she’d endured plenty of grievances.
Now the woman was gone, and she’d died so bizarrely.
Did that count as… karma?
Subconsciously, she hugged the pink insulated lunchbox in her arms and got up to leave.
She had to go see Miss Xia right away.
Just then, the office door was pushed open, and a middle-aged man in a black suit walked in.
The man carried a briefcase under his arm, his hair neatly combed, and his eyes behind his glasses swept the room sharply.
“Everyone, stop what you’re doing.”
The man clapped his hands.
“I’m the new head of the logistics department transferred from headquarters. My surname is Zhao.”
“Supervisor Zhang had an accident. The bureau asked me to take over temporarily. Let’s have a quick meeting to reassign the work.”
Lu Yiyi stopped and had no choice but to obediently return to her seat.
Supervisor Zhao acted decisively.
In a few short words, he corrected the mess left by his predecessor, and even the office veterans were brought in line.
All the odd jobs that should have belonged to the old-timers but had been forced onto the newcomers, he threw them back.
Lu Yiyi listened attentively, thinking this new leader was someone who got things done.
Later she heard colleagues gossiping that Supervisor Zhao had deep connections.
Apparently he had a powerful background in the Paranormal Bureau, was close friends with the head of headquarters, and had a formidable spirit master relative working on a special operations team.
“Lu Yiyi.”
Supervisor Zhao called her name, frowning.
Lu Yiyi quickly stood up straight.
“Here.”
Supervisor Zhao flipped through the task list in his hand, his tone full of confusion.
“You’re a junior operator who just joined five days ago. You haven’t even finished basic paranormal training. Why do you have a task for psychological counseling on a calamity-class containment subject? Who assigned it?”
Before Lu Yiyi could speak, Wang Li next to her stood up first and, with righteous indignation, “defended” her.
“Supervisor Zhao, it was Sister Zhang who forced this on Yiyi yesterday! Yiyi is timid and scared to go. She only accepted because Sister Zhang pressured her.”
She walked over to Lu Yiyi, warmly put her arm around her shoulder, and put on the look of a caring older sister.
“Yiyi is still new. Going to Level 17 underground is too dangerous. Sister Zhang really went too far.”
The eight million bonus had already been taken by Lu Yiyi, but there was still a long period of follow-up counseling, which would bring in a huge sum as well.
Supervisor Zhao’s face darkened.
“Nonsense! Even expert teams are helpless when it comes to counseling calamity-class containment subjects. Are we sending a newbie to die?”
“This task is canceled. Lu Yiyi, starting today you’ll work with Li Qian on file sorting. Get familiar with the work first.”
“No!”
Lu Yiyi blurted out without thinking, her voice urgent, completely unlike her usual self.
The entire office went quiet.
Everyone looked at her.
“Supervisor Zhao, I’m fine!”
She was so anxious her face turned red.
“Miss Xia is a good person. She’s not as scary as the rumors say. And… and I promised her I’d go today!”
“She’s a calamity-class spirit master, not your playmate!”
Supervisor Zhao’s tone grew heavier.
“She’s a source of contamination that could lose control at any moment! You got lucky yesterday, but that doesn’t mean you’ll get out alive today.”
“The bureau has rules. Newcomers are strictly forbidden from contact with top-level containment subjects. No negotiation!”
Wang Li seized the opportunity and quickly chimed in.
“Supervisor Zhao is right. Yiyi, you can’t joke with your own life. This kind of dangerous task is better left to experienced veterans like us.”
She turned to Supervisor Zhao and patted her chest.
Yesterday Lu Yiyi had come out completely unscathed and even got the signature.
That meant that woman named Xia Qimeng was currently dormant, or her mental state was already very stable, so she wouldn’t hurt anyone.
If even an innocent airhead like Lu Yiyi who knew nothing could handle it, then as a professionally trained veteran, all she had to do was go through the motions and it’d be a piece of cake.
That was a bounty that had been multiplied tenfold.
Lu Yiyi had only taken the first day’s bonus, but the compensation for the follow-up soothing work was still waiting to be picked up.
As long as she could go chat with that crazy woman, her retirement money was secured.
She couldn’t let Lu Yiyi hog this godsend alone.
“Supervisor, I’ll take this task. I’ve worked at the bureau for five years, received professional mental defense training, and have more experience than a newcomer in handling emergencies. I’ll take over Xia Qimeng’s counseling from here.”
Supervisor Zhao thought for a moment.
Wang Li made sense.
Safety always came first.
“You’ve received Level 2 mental defense training. You are indeed more suitable than a newcomer.”
He finally made his decision, picked up his pen, and crossed something on the file.
“Fine, the task is transferred to you. Stay safe. If anything happens, pull the alarm.”
“Understood. Don’t worry, Supervisor Zhao.”
Wang Li grinned from ear to ear, her eyes squinting into slits.
Lu Yiyi stood in place, still holding the pink insulated lunchbox.
Everything happened so fast she couldn’t get a word in.
Supervisor Zhao was following the rules, and he was thinking about her safety.
Sister Wang Li was a veteran with plenty of experience.
And she really didn’t understand anything about the paranormal.
Yesterday she even fell asleep in the containment room.
She only completed the task purely because Miss Xia had a good temper.
Since the bureau had rules, she could only obey.
But…
Lu Yiyi looked down at the lunchbox in her hands.
Miss Xia said yesterday she’d wait for her.
She also praised her cake as delicious.
The meeting ended, and the office area became lively again.
Wang Li returned to her seat, hummed a tune, and started touching up her makeup.
She deliberately applied a bright lipstick and checked herself in the mirror again and again.
Lu Yiyi dawdled over to Wang Li’s workstation.
“Sister Wang.”
She handed over the pink lunchbox, her voice soft.
“Since you’re going today… could you bring this to her for me?”
Wang Li glanced at the girlish lunchbox.
“What is it?”
“It’s a sandwich I made this morning.”
Lu Yiyi said quietly.
“Miss Xia said yesterday she liked the pastries I made…”
“Sister Wang, could you please pass it to her, and apologize to her for me? Tell her I’ve been assigned new work and can’t go for now, but I’ll definitely find a chance to go back and see her.”
Wang Li rolled her eyes inwardly.
Bringing snacks?
This little girl really treated going to Level 17 underground as visiting relatives.
She was just a monster about to lose control.
All she had to do was fool her a bit and get the signature.
Who had time to deliver meals to her?
“Fine, fine. You’re so childish.”
Wang Li rolled her eyes, snatched the lunchbox impatiently, and casually tossed it beside the trash can at her feet.
“She’s just a monster, and you’re treating her like family? Go get back to work.”
Lu Yiyi watched the lunchbox being tossed on the ground, feeling very uncomfortable.
But she had a soft personality and didn’t dare say more.
She could only walk back to her workstation, looking back every few steps.
She hoped Sister Wang would explain things properly to Miss Xia.
Miss Xia was so gentle…
She probably wouldn’t be angry.
