The electronic clock on the wall flickered in pale blue numbers.
05:00.
Five minutes left in the hour.
Xia Qimeng sat behind the desk, chin resting on one hand, staring without blinking at the closed door.
Why hasn’t the little one come yet?
Did she scare her off?
She shifted positions, long white hair sliding over her shoulder, a few strands falling onto the desk.
Usually she wouldn’t even bother to lift an eyelid for an entire day.
But this short fifty-five minutes felt unbearably long.
The hardcover book on the desk was opened and closed seven or eight times.
She couldn’t read a single word; her mind was full of that soft, cute face.
Xia Qimeng frowned.
The supernatural power that had just calmed down began to stir around her again.
It’s just making a cake.
Even if she really was clumsy and couldn’t even crack an egg, she could just order takeout on her phone.
An hour was enough for the delivery driver to bring it.
Doesn’t she have even that much sense?
The clock ticked to 04:20.
Still no sound outside the containment room.
Xia Qimeng’s patience was draining fast.
The air at the edge of the desk twisted.
A corner of the hard rosewood silently disappeared, the cut smooth as a mirror.
She was annoyed.
Very annoyed.
The people who came before to die either dawdled outside the door too scared to enter, or once inside, they annoyed her.
Today, she finally saw someone pleasing, but that person ran off faster than a rabbit and never came back.
If that little girl dared to abandon her…
Xia Qimeng stood up, walked to the solid gold blast door, and pressed her palm against the cold metal.
The next time the door opened for routine inspection, she could slip out unnoticed, find that naughty girl named Lu Yiyi.
Catch her, tie her to a chair, and give her a proper education.
Just imagining it made her blood run faster.
A long-missed excitement spread through her body.
01:45.
[Beep. Identity verification passed.]
The electronic prompt finally sounded, interrupting Xia Qimeng’s dangerous fantasy.
The heavy gold door slid open to both sides.
Lu Yiyi rushed in with a tray, taking quick little steps, her twin ponytails flapping behind her.
She looked far from presentable.
Damp strands of hair clung to her fair skin.
Her uniform jacket was gone, and her apron had several white flour stains on it.
“Sorry, Miss Xia, for keeping you waiting…”
Lu Yiyi bowed out of habit before she even caught her breath.
But she bowed too deeply, and the things on the tray wobbled, scaring her into straightening up quickly and carefully guarding the tray.
She had jogged all the way, calves cramping.
So close.
If she had been one minute late, she would have become this woman’s meal.
Seeing her, the gloom in Xia Qimeng’s eyes cleared at once.
Her expression visibly brightened.
The violent spatial-folding power around her also died down.
The little rabbit didn’t run.
She came back to her door.
Xia Qimeng leaned back against the wall, crossed her arms, pressed down her rising smile, and put on a bored look.
She walked back to the desk, eyes landing on the tray.
On the plate were two pieces of strawberry cake.
The one on the left was beautifully shaped, with elaborate cream piping.
Clearly the work of a professional pastry chef.
The one on the right looked plain, with no fancy decorations, simple and unadorned.
But you could tell it was made with care.
“Put it on my desk for now,” Xia Qimeng said evenly, giving away nothing.
“Yes, yes…”
Lu Yiyi shuffled over and set the tray steadily in the middle of the desk.
Xia Qimeng walked around behind her and patted her shoulder.
A very light gesture.
But with that pat, all the strength drained out of Lu Yiyi’s body.
That nice flowery scent hit her again, dulling her thoughts.
So sleepy.
Her limbs were weak.
“So,” Xia Qimeng leaned down, her chin hovering near Lu Yiyi’s neck, close to her ear. “Why are there two?”
The cool breath landed on her neck.
Lu Yiyi shrank back.
“The one on the left…”
She pointed a timid finger at the left cake, her voice trembling.
“The one on the left is the one I bought from ‘Sweetheart Bakery’ nearby.”
“It was my first time learning to make a cake, and I couldn’t control a lot of the details. I was afraid I wouldn’t make it in time, so I ordered a delivery on my phone and had the courier bring one from the store.”
The air was quiet.
Lu Yiyi waited for a long time, but heard no scolding.
She found the courage to turn her head and steal a glance.
Xia Qimeng was staring at that plain little cake.
“What about this one?”
She extended a long index finger and poked the one on the right.
“This one…”
Lu Yiyi’s face turned red.
“This one I made myself.”
“Since you already bought one, why still bring this over?”
“Because…”
Lu Yiyi bit her lower lip, her voice getting smaller and smaller.
“Because you said you wanted me to make you a cake. The one I bought isn’t mine.”
She lifted her head and looked at Xia Qimeng with pleading eyes, her big eyes brimming with tears.
“Miss Xia, I’m sorry. I’m a bit stupid, I can’t even make a cake properly.”
She sniffled.
Her soft childish voice was full of grievance.
“You can dock my wages, or you can scold me.”
She paused for two seconds, then stepped back half a step and added in a small voice.
“But… but can you please not eat me? I don’t taste good. There’s not much meat on me.”
Xia Qimeng was stunned.
She stared at the trembling little girl in front of her, and a corner of her heart caved in.
When was the last time she met someone so honest?
She couldn’t remember.
In her memory, after becoming a spirit tamer, she had never met anyone who made her want to talk.
She wanted to know more about her.
See more of her real self.
This little thing named Lu Yiyi… her sincerity was precious, and she was unbearably cute.
Xia Qimeng straightened up, her gaze sweeping between the two cakes.
Finally, it settled on Lu Yiyi.
“I like talking to honest people.”
She pulled out the chair, sat down again, and patted the empty spot beside her, signaling Lu Yiyi to come sit.
“Wasn’t this supposed to be psychological counseling? Perfect. We have two cakes. Let’s eat and talk.”
Lu Yiyi was a little surprised and quickly went to sit.
The chair was wide, so they could sit side by side without being cramped.
As soon as she sat down, that strange floral scent washed over her again.
Smelling it, Lu Yiyi’s head started to float again, dizzy.
The stone in her heart quietly settled.
It seemed Miss Xia wasn’t as scary as the rumors said.
She was reasonable and easy to talk to, not at all as crazy as her colleagues made her out to be.
The so-called cold-blooded witch who killed without blinking, the man-eating old hag, all malicious slander.
As long as she followed her lead and kept a proper attitude, maybe… the mission could actually be completed?
That generous bonus seemed to be waving at her.
It was just… her leg felt a little itchy.
Lu Yiyi slowly lowered her unfocused gaze.
Eh…
Miss Xia… why was her hand touching her leg?
