Join the ServerFirst floor of the Paranormal Bureau, logistics office.
Customer service representative Little Deer sat properly at her computer, wearing her headset.
Bizarre reports streamed in over the phone, one stranger than the last.
“Hello, is this the Paranormal Bureau? Help!” A man’s cracking voice came through the line. “A hand grew out of my toilet! It’s even handing me toilet paper!”
Lu Yiyi carefully typed the report into the system.
She wasn’t a fast typist, but she was meticulous.
“Hello sir, may I ask if the hand is handing you single-ply or double-ply paper? Does it provide any other services?” she asked into the microphone.
“Single-ply! And it’s damn sandpaper!”
“Understood, your report has been logged. Please avoid using that toilet for now. A field agent will arrive within ten minutes.”
The moment she hung up, another line cut in.
“Operator, I want to file a complaint! I just bought this TV from a secondhand market, and every night at exactly nine o’clock, a long-haired female ghost crawls out of it.”
The woman’s voice was robust, full of energy.
“Ma’am, please stay calm and stay away from the TV…”
“I’m perfectly calm! I don’t care that she crawls out, but she insists on fighting me for the remote! I want to watch Rural Love, she insists on watching Temptation of Going Home! Last night she even took the batteries out of my remote! Are you going to do something about this or not!”
Lu Yiyi lowered her head and typed each word into the system.
“Ma’am, please unplug the TV first. We’ll send someone over right away…”
“I already unplugged it! She plugged it back in herself!”
“Understood, I’ve flagged your case as urgent. Please avoid physical conflict with the female ghost.”
After hanging up, Lu Yiyi let out a long breath.
She was just about to take a sip of water when the communicator rang again.
“Hello, is this the Paranormal Bureau? My dog has mutated!” a little boy wailed.
“Don’t be scared, little one. What did your dog turn into?”
“It stands up and walks on two legs, and it’s wearing my clothes! Right now it’s sitting on the sofa using my tablet to check the stock market! It also said the dog food I buy tastes bad and it insists on eating beef Wellington!”
Lu Yiyi’s fingers stopped on the keyboard.
‘And a fancy dog at that.’
“Little one, which stock is the dog looking at? Is it up or down?”
“Everything it bought hit the daily limit! It even said it’s going to use the money to buy this apartment and make me move out!”
“Alright, please keep the dog calm. Field agents are on their way. In the meantime, do your best to meet its dietary needs.”
After finally getting through those absurd reports, Lu Yiyi took off her headset and rubbed her sore ears.
She glanced at the clock on the wall.
9:30.
Sister Wang should have met Miss Xia by now.
Did Miss Xia like those sandwiches?
Would Miss Xia be upset when she heard that Lu Yiyi had been transferred away?
Lu Yiyi sighed.
She actually wanted to go down to level 17.
Not for the money on the bounty board.
She’d been at the bureau for five days, and because she had a soft personality and looked easy to push around, her colleagues had been ordering her around like a maid.
They dumped all the odd jobs on her as if it were her due, and scolded her when things went wrong.
Xia Qimeng was the first person in her working life who had been gentle with her.
She complimented the cake she made.
She let her rest her head on her lap and sleep.
Except those little hands of hers wandered.
Even though the whole bureau trembled at the name of that disaster-level spirit master, Lu Yiyi wasn’t afraid.
She only remembered that rare kindness.
She really hoped she’d get another chance to see her.
Bang!
The office door burst open.
A thick, cloying smell of blood poured in.
The clatter of keyboards came to an abrupt halt.
Everyone stopped and turned to look at the doorway.
Wang Li stood there.
Or rather, a broken body barely recognizable as Wang Li.
There wasn’t a single patch of good skin on her.
Her clothes had been shredded into dark red rags, as if someone had flayed her alive.
The wounds even had an eerie symmetrical beauty.
Her whole body had been scored like meat prepared for cooking.
Blood dripped down her pant legs, dragging a trail of crimson across the floor.
The coffee cup in Li Qian’s hand nearly fell.
Bureau employees dealt with paranormal incidents every day.
They’d seen more dead people than living ones, and their mental fortitude far exceeded ordinary people.
But a bloody atrocity unfolding right in the office was a first.
Wang Li dragged her ruined body forward one step.
A wheezing “huff” escaped her throat, the sound of air scraping through blood and foam in a severed windpipe.
She didn’t look at anyone.
Her bloodshot eyes locked onto Lu Yiyi.
“Miss Xia says…”
Wang Li opened her mouth, and dark red blood clots spilled out.
With the last of her strength, she forced out a few words from deep in her throat.
“She wants… Miss Lu Yiyi… to go… give her… psychological counseling…”
Wang Li, who normally wouldn’t even look at Lu Yiyi, had suddenly learned to use honorifics.
The words had barely left her mouth.
Wang Li’s body tilted and hit the floor with a heavy thud.
She didn’t move again.
She was dead.
The office was dead silent.
All eyes shifted to Lu Yiyi in unison.
Lu Yiyi sat at her desk, gripping the armrests tightly, badly shaken.
Her stomach churned violently.
Last night’s pizza surged straight up her throat.
Wang Li was dead.
She died after going to level 17.
She must have made Miss Xia angry.
Xia Qimeng’s beautiful face surfaced in Lu Yiyi’s mind.
How could someone so gentle do something so cruel?
Wang Li must have done something terrible to offend Miss Xia.
Disaster-level spirit masters all had strange tempers.
A few words going the wrong way, and a paranormal meltdown was completely normal.
Miss Xia was in a manic state.
She urgently needed to be soothed.
Lu Yiyi stood up, her legs weak, and forced herself to stay upright.
“Sister Qianqian.”
She turned to look at Li Qian, who was still trembling beside her.
“Ah?”
Li Qian answered, shaking.
“Please go notify Supervisor Zhao,” Lu Yiyi said, her voice shaking but her words coming fast. “Explain what happened here.”
“What about you?”
Li Qian panicked, watching her walk away.
“Don’t go! That woman is insane! Look what she did to Wang Li. If you go down there, you’ll die!”
“I have to go.”
Lu Yiyi didn’t look back.
She hurried past the blood on the floor and ran out of the office.
In the hallway, shrill alarms blared.
Red emergency lights flashed in alternation, casting the entire base in a blood-red glow.
The loudspeaker looped the highest-level evacuation order.
“Warning! A class-S paranormal riot has occurred on underground level 17! All non-combat personnel must evacuate immediately!”
Lu Yiyi ran against the tide of people, heading for the elevator.
Her colleagues rushed outward in panic.
When they saw her charging in, they shouted to stop her.
“Lu Yiyi, are you crazy? Run!”
“It’s out of control down there! Going down now is suicide!”
Lu Yiyi ignored them all.
Her small figure weaved through the crowd, stubbornly making her way toward the door that led into the abyss.
The elevator began its descent.
Lu Yiyi leaned against the wall, dizziness tugging at her nerves.
Only now did the fear catch up with her.
Wang Li’s mutilated body lingered in her mind, impossible to shake.
Miss Xia really had lost control.
If she went down, would she end up like Wang Li too?
She looked down at her trembling hands and rubbed her cheeks hard with both palms.
She couldn’t be afraid.
She’d promised Miss Xia yesterday that she would come today.
Miss Xia had been so gentle with her.
She’d even set her seal on her with her own hand.
She was just sick.
She couldn’t control her power.
And after being locked underground for so long, it was only natural her temper was a little off.
As long as Lu Yiyi explained things properly and talked with her, she would calm down.
The numbers on the elevator screen kept ticking down.
The temperature kept dropping.
The pressure in the air grew heavier.
“Ding!”
Level 17.
The elevator doors slid open.
The motion-sensor lights in the corridor were all dark.
Only the emergency lights at the corners were on, casting a dim red glow.
The moment Lu Yiyi stepped out of the elevator, she spotted the figure around the corner ahead.
Xia Qimeng was crouching beside a trash can in the corridor.
She wore a beautiful pink ancient-style gauze dress today, its long hem layered and flowing.
The woman whose very walk carried the grace of a noble lady was now squatting on the ground without a shred of dignity, her hand reaching into a filthy trash can, rummaging through the discarded waste.
Crumpled paper, plastic wrappers, disposable items.
She paid no attention to the grime touching her pale, glowing skin and elegant gauze dress.
Her movements were gentle as she searched, almost clumsy.
Finally, under an empty bottle, she found the pink insulated lunchbox.
It had a cartoon strawberry pattern printed on it.
The edges were smudged with coffee stains and dust, a little dirty.
Xia Qimeng held the lunchbox in her hands.
She didn’t use her paranormal power to clean it.
Instead, she raised her sleeve, and with the thin pink gauze, wiped the stains off the surface bit by bit.
When it was clean, she unlatched the clasp.
Inside lay four neat sandwiches.
Fried egg, grilled meat, tuna, lettuce.
The edges had been carefully trimmed.
They were made with care, completely intact.
Xia Qimeng gazed at the sandwiches inside, utterly still, as if the entire world had narrowed to just her and this little lunchbox.
