Chapter 10: Where’s My Yiyi? Give Her Back to Me

Wang Li smoothed her hair in the mirror, wiping the bright red lipstick evenly across her lips with her finger.

She picked up her work badge from the desk, grabbed the pink insulated lunchbox, and strutted away in her high heels.

The elevator descended.

Standing inside, Wang Li watched the numbers on the screen tick down.

The lower it went, the colder it got.

But Wang Li’s heart burned hot, almost feverish.

As long as she got that signature, she’d be financially free for the rest of her life.

She took a compact mirror out of her bag and gave her makeup one last check.

‘What does that yellow-haired girl Lu Yiyi know? She’s just a blind cat that stumbled onto a dead mouse.’

The only reason the girl got out unscathed yesterday was probably her pretty face, plus the fact that that crazy woman happened to be in a dormant phase and in a good mood.

She herself might be a bit older, but she still had charm.

Years at the bureau had taught her how to say what people wanted to hear.

What situation hadn’t she handled?

A little flirting, a few going-through-the-motions pleasantries, a couple of flattering words to match the other side’s tune.

Easy money.

She could just lie back and let it roll in.

Once she got the receipt, she’d go back up to report to Supervisor Zhao and stomp on Lu Yiyi while she was at it.

This mountain of fortune would be all hers.

She pulled her shirt collar down, undid two buttons, and showed a hint of cleavage.

“Ding. Floor B17.”

The metal doors slid open, and Wang Li stepped into the empty corridor.

She glanced at the pink insulated lunchbox in her hand with disdain.

It even had cartoon strawberry prints on it.

So childish.

Bringing a homemade love lunch to visit a calamity-class spirit master.

Like she was visiting a kindergarten.

Carrying this thing around dragged down her professional image.

What if the person inside got upset?

Eight million yuan would fly right out the window.

When she passed the trash can at the corner of the hallway, she tossed it in without a second thought.

Wang Li didn’t even lift her eyelid.

She walked straight to the special containment room door and swiped her badge on the access panel.

“Beep. Identity verified. Mid-level operator, Wang Li.”

The solid gold blast door slid open.

There was no terrifying aura, no suffocating paranormal fluctuation as rumored.

Instead, she was met with a faint floral scent mixed with a calming woody note.

In the center of the room, behind a wide rosewood desk, sat a woman so beautiful it left people speechless.

Snow-white hair cascaded softly over her shoulders.

Her cold, pale skin glowed under the ceiling light.

Those eyes, interwoven with black and color, had been looking toward the door full of anticipation.

Xia Qimeng had specially put on a pink ancient-style gauze dress today.

To match the outfit, she’d started getting ready at six in the morning, spending three full hours.

She remembered the little one yesterday loved pink.

Even her underwear was pink (don’t ask how she knew).

This outfit matched Yiyi’s soft, adorable style perfectly.

She’d also prepared some little desserts on the table: a plate of delicate cookies, with a pot of freshly brewed black tea beside it.

The tea fragrance curled upward as she waited for that little white rabbit to come hopping in, calling her in that soft, sweet voice, then obediently lying in her arms to be squeezed and played with.

Hearing the door signal, a sweet smile had already formed at the corner of Xia Qimeng’s lips.

The very air around her turned light and airy.

But the moment she saw who walked in, everything stopped.

Wang Li swallowed.

This woman was way too striking.

Her beauty felt unreal, almost illusory.

No wonder Lu Yiyi came out unharmed yesterday.

This didn’t look like a monster at all.

It looked like a pampered young lady from a wealthy family.

The stone in her heart finally dropped.

Wang Li put on what she thought was her brightest, friendliest smile and walked in on her high heels.

“Miss Xia, hello. I’m Wang Li, the new psychological counselor.”

The silence was terrifying.

The smile on Xia Qimeng’s face faded bit by bit the moment she saw who had come.

She didn’t look at Wang Li.

Her gaze passed over Wang Li’s shoulder and landed on the empty corridor.

No little darling with twin ponytails.

No soft baby voice.

No sweet, milky scent.

Only this woman she found repulsive.

“Where is she?”

Xia Qimeng spoke, her voice light, impossible to read.

Wang Li thought the woman hadn’t heard clearly, or was asking about that clueless newbie from before.

So she walked two steps forward and casually placed her briefcase on the desk.

“You mean Lu Yiyi?”

Wang Li pulled up a chair and sat down uninvited, playing the caring older sister.

“Yiyi is new. She hasn’t even finished basic training, so she doesn’t meet the bureau’s requirements.”

“Supervisor assigned the task to me. I’ll be handling the counseling from now on.”

As she spoke, she took out an assessment form and a pen from her bag, ready to run through the standard Q&A test.

“Miss Xia, let’s start today’s session. If you have anything unhappy or any physical discomfort, you can tell me. I’ve received professional psychological training, so I can definitely help you.”

Wang Li pushed the assessment form in front of Xia Qimeng with an eager smile.

“Please finish filling this out first. I’ll carefully analyze your current psychological issues and counsel you.”

The air was very still.

Xia Qimeng slowly stood up.

The hem of her pink gauze dress dragged across the carpet.

The air around her began to warp subtly, like invisible mirrors folding into one another midair.

Wang Li noticed nothing.

She kept reciting the script from the training manual.

“We all have stress, really. Just talking it out helps. The bureau has always cared about you…”

Before she could finish.

The edge of the assessment form, sitting at the center of the desk, lost a chunk out of thin air.

Then the whole stack of paper silently split in half in the middle.

Wang Li blinked, thinking she was seeing things because she hadn’t slept well last night.

Before she could rub her eyes, the stack of paper and the plastic pen disintegrated in midair.

One became two, two became four, four became eight…

In the blink of an eye, it was sliced into countless fine shreds.

White paper scraps and black plastic powder mixed together, scattering over the rosewood desk like a strange, miniature snowstorm.

Wang Li’s words stuck in her throat.

Her mouth hung open.

Her vocal cords had gone on strike.

“I’ll ask one more time.”

Xia Qimeng raised her eyes.

In her black pupils, those brilliant colors were completely gone, replaced by swirling, tangled death energy.

“Where is my Yiyi?”

As those words fell, the entire space on Floor B17 began to twist violently.

The pale emergency lights overhead flickered wildly, refracting at bizarre angles through the warped space, stretching the two figures’ shadows into broken fragments.

A piercing alarm blared, red lights flashing alternately, turning the pure gold cage into a vision of hell.

The smile on Wang Li’s face froze.

She finally realized something was wrong.

A nameless terror shot from the soles of her feet straight to the top of her skull.

The pure gold walls around them gave off a screeching sound like nails on a blackboard.

She wanted to run, but her legs were nailed to the spot, completely immobile.

Xia Qimeng walked around the desk, step by step, toward her.

The fur that had been smoothed yesterday was now completely bristling.

Without Lu Yiyi’s soothing, the mania she’d suppressed all night was back with a vengeance.

Everything felt wrong.

There was something alive in her field of vision.

Something alive that had replaced her Yiyi, ruining her entire happy morning.

She wanted to kill it.

That soft little thing yesterday had promised to come.

She’d smiled so sweetly when she left, saying she’d see her tomorrow.

She’d deliberately left a mark on her hair tie, and casually cleaned up a few pieces of trash that wanted to harm Yiyi last night.

Xia Qimeng extended her long finger, stopping the tip an inch from Wang Li’s forehead.

“She made me a strawberry cake.”

Xia Qimeng murmured, as if talking to herself, or pronouncing Wang Li’s death sentence.

“She also promised she’d come early today to keep me company.”

The fingertip pressed down slightly.

Wang Li’s nasal bridge gave a sharp crack, collapsing inward.

Blood surged from her nasal cavity, blocking her windpipe.

She coughed violently, blood spray splattering in the air, but stopped by an invisible barrier, unable to touch Xia Qimeng in the slightest.

“Give her back to me.”

Xia Qimeng tilted her head, white hair sliding off her shoulder.

Her tone was hollow and stubborn, like an obsessive who had lost something she loved.

Her things.

How could others just transfer them away without permission?

Without a single word, they hid away her exclusive doll and sent a cheap substitute to fob her off.

How rude.
