Chapter 196: Despite my deepest gratitude, I can only offer my apologies

“Mmm… I was just too hungry. I couldn’t resist…” Seviala stuck out her tongue and scratched her head awkwardly, looking completely guilty.

“You’re still hungry?” Perletti almost laughed from sheer disbelief. Pointing at Seviala’s nose, she scolded her:

“I only starved you for five meals! Look at how much you’ve eaten already! More than what a normal elf eats in five entire days! After eating all that, you still dare say you’re hungry?!”

Perletti was utterly speechless.

Not to mention the gigantic sticky rice dumpling bigger than Seviala herself that she’d swallowed whole earlier.

Was this dragon’s stomach a bottomless pit or something?

There was no way all that food could simply evaporate after going inside.

“And how is that my fault?” Seviala grumbled unhappily, her dragon tail smacking the ground furiously. “Elves already eat tiny portions to begin with! I’m a dragon! A mighty dragon! Our body sizes aren’t even on the same scale, okay?!”

She sounded perfectly justified, though inwardly she felt wronged.

Dragon lifespans were unimaginably long, and their bodies never stopped growing. From hatchlings breaking free of their eggs to ancient dragons vast enough to cover the sky, every inch of scale growth required enormous amounts of energy.

That also meant a dragon’s craving for food was instinct engraved into their bloodline.

Forget carpets and rice dumplings—even hard rocks and rough bark counted as edible food in a dragon’s eyes.

Before coming here, she had survived by chewing rocks and tree bark just to fill her stomach. She had already been starving to the point her chest nearly stuck to her back.

“That’s enough.”

Caroline coldly interrupted their argument, her voice carrying unquestionable authority.

“Stop focusing on such meaningless matters.”

She looked toward Isabena, her expression grave.

“Isabena, notify every witch immediately. Put them all on alert and evacuate the tower at once. Head toward the vampire border. Once Feiye arrives, enter vampire territory together with her.”

Isabena nodded and closed her eyes. Starlight faintly spiraled around her fingertips.

Moments later, she reopened them, brows tightly furrowed.

“…I’ve notified them. Most of the witches responded. But… only Judy hasn’t replied at all.”

“I’ll continue trying to contact her.”

A trace of worry flashed through her eyes.

Judy had the most impulsive personality. If something had happened to her…

“Why? What exactly happened?”

Perletti could no longer hold back. The confusion in her heart only grew larger.

Caroline’s reaction was far too abnormal.

Caroline glanced at her and let out a furious sigh, as though disappointed by someone who failed to meet expectations. She raised her hand and smacked Perletti hard on the head.

“Perletti, you’ve been deceived! Completely played by Xiaomu!”

Normally, Caroline always spoke cautiously, terrified Xiaomu might overhear and cause trouble.

But now, she no longer cared.

Because Xiaomu had already fully revealed her hand.

“There’s no need for pretenses anymore.”

“Teacher? What’s wrong?”

Olivia stepped forward worriedly, only to be stopped by Caroline raising a hand.

“You two were both deceived by her.”

Caroline’s icy gaze swept across Perletti and Olivia.

“I don’t know what Xiaomu said to convince you to willingly enter the World Tree. But she calculated perfectly that Perletti values loyalty and emotions too deeply to ever watch you fall into danger.”

“She only needed to lure you into the trap. Perletti would inevitably follow you into the World Tree…”

“…and help her release Danluo.”

At this point, Caroline could no longer suppress her anger. She smacked Perletti on the head again.

“I already told you before—witches should learn to hide their sharpness and stop standing out everywhere! That conference happened barely a month ago, and you’ve already been manipulated this thoroughly!”

“Now look what’s happened! The elves’ centuries-long restraint is gone. Who knows what Xiaomu plans to do next?! Whatever it is, she’ll move quickly. We need to leave immediately before things spiral completely out of control!”

“Feiye has a close relationship with the vampire queen. With her around, the vampire soldiers won’t make things difficult for us. Hurry. We leave now!”

Caroline’s voice overflowed with regret and agitation.

She understood Xiaomu too well.

That woman would use absolutely any means necessary to achieve her goals.

Caroline didn’t dare gamble.

She didn’t dare gamble on whether Xiaomu’s plans would drag the entire witch race into disaster.

“It… can’t really be that serious, right?”

Olivia’s voice sounded weak and uncertain.

She desperately tried recalling everything, but no matter how she thought about it, Xiaomu’s actions felt more like someone driven desperate after enduring centuries of imprisonment beneath the shadow of the God of Decay.

“You being able to say something like that only proves you don’t understand Xiaomu at all.”

Caroline let out a cold laugh, the chill in her eyes deepening.

“She could have taken things slowly and earned Perletti’s trust step by step. Instead, she deliberately chose the most extreme method possible, even at the cost of intensifying the conflict between Perletti and the elves.”

“That only proves one thing.”

“She doesn’t have much time left.”

“We must leave immediately. If we delay, it’ll be too late.”

Before her words had even fully fallen, Isabena’s figure dissolved into a streak of starlight and vanished.

Caroline wasted no more time. She grabbed Perletti’s hand and quickly headed toward the corridor.

She had lived within this garden for decades.

No one understood Xiaomu’s methods better than she did.

Yet the instant Caroline’s fingers touched Perletti—

A vast and irresistible pressure suddenly descended from the heavens.

That pressure carried the heavy scent of vegetation, crushing down like collapsing mountains.

In an instant, Caroline was slammed flat against the ground, unable to move even a single finger.

“…Of course.”

Caroline cursed under her breath as blood trickled from the corner of her mouth.

She should have realized it earlier.

Xiaomu had likely already cast a massive net over everything, watching both her and Perletti’s every movement.

All she could hope was that the witches inside the tower escaped in time.

“T-This… Ancestor…? N-No… how could it be you?!”

Olivia stared at the figure slowly descending from the sky, her pupils shrinking violently as she staggered backward, all color draining from her face.

She had witnessed Caroline’s strength firsthand.

Within the entire elven palace, there was likely only one person capable of suppressing Caroline so completely in a single instant.

Xiaomu slowly landed upon the grass, her green robes brushing gently across the earth.

She looked toward the struggling Caroline and let out a soft sigh. Within those ancient, still eyes mixed sorrow, sympathy… and painful resolve.

“Ah… I truly didn’t want things to reach this point.”

Seeing this, rage instantly exploded within Perletti’s chest.

She raised her hand and summoned a brilliantly glowing lantern, its radiance illuminating the fury in her eyes.

Beside her, Seviala bared her teeth and growled lowly at Xiaomu, dragon scales standing upright as she entered a combat stance.

“I knew it! I knew you weren’t a good person!”

Xiaomu’s gaze swept calmly across everyone before she lightly waved her hand.

A wind carrying the fragrance of grass and trees suddenly surged through the entire garden.

When the wind finally stopped—

Perletti and the others discovered they now stood beneath an enormous towering tree.

And behind them stood dozens of figures packed tightly together—

Every single witch from the tower.

Even Isabena, who had clearly been forcibly dragged here, stood pale-faced among the crowd.

Perletti’s gaze rapidly swept through the group, her heart sinking lower and lower.

Neither Feiye nor Olivia were anywhere to be seen.

“Hey! Caroline, wake up! What the hell is going on?!”

Perletti shouted anxiously, attempting to rush forward—

Only to be thrown back by an invisible barrier.

Caroline barely raised her head, her voice hoarse.

“Isn’t it obvious…?”

“…We were all… outplayed by that woman.”

Xiaomu’s voice slowly drifted down from atop the giant tree, blending together with the rustling leaves and spreading across the entire forest.

“Witches who carry elemental divine power… the God of Nature has long since fallen. The elves can no longer exist without a god’s protection.”

Everyone looked upward.

Xiaomu stood atop the World Tree itself, robes fluttering like a deity descended from heaven.

Her burning gaze fixed upon the rapidly growing World Tree.

Its branches expanded visibly in every direction. The massive trunk split apart with thunderous cracks as countless roots burst from the earth like gigantic dragon claws, tightly gripping the land itself.

The sky above the Elven Forest became completely covered by the World Tree’s branches and leaves.

Not a single ray of sunlight could penetrate anymore.

Endless shadow slowly descended over the world.

“Hey! I kindly helped you drive away Danluo, and now you capture all of us?! What’s that supposed to mean?!”

Perletti roared toward Xiaomu, the lantern in her hand blazing even brighter.

Yet seeing the witches behind her, she forcibly suppressed the urge to attack.

She still couldn’t reveal her light-element powers here.

“You truly did help me greatly. For that, I am sincerely grateful.”

Xiaomu’s voice remained utterly calm, devoid of emotion.

“But there are things I absolutely must do.”

“And for that…”

“…all I can say is, I’m sorry.”
