Peletti couldn’t help but look at the little one in her arms with newfound respect.
She gently stroked Scarlet Night’s wet silver hair, her fingertips savoring its softness. Scarlet Night, clearly pleased, obediently leaned into her touch and revealed a blissful smile.
At first, seeing how small Scarlet Night was, Peletti had naturally treated her like a child, often forgetting the fact that beneath that youthful appearance was someone several hundred years old.
Only now did she truly realize that the seemingly immature girl before her actually possessed life experience far richer than her own—perhaps dozens of times more.
“What knowledge? I just read it off,”
Scarlet Night shook her head, and a black scroll appeared out of thin air, floating in front of her.
Since the two of them were kneeling face to face, the scroll had been hidden in Peletti’s blind spot all this time.
When Peletti took it, the water on her hands touched the parchment—yet vanished instantly, leaving no trace of dampness behind.
“Alright, you win,”
Peletti said helplessly, pressing a hand to her forehead. She really had no idea where this little one kept pulling such things from.
She skimmed through the scroll quickly. The contents matched exactly what Scarlet Night had described—concise, with no unnecessary information. The texture of the scroll was unusual, feeling like some kind of animal hide, yet still possessing the flexibility of paper.
“Do you have more of these?”
Peletti handed the scroll back, her tone tinged with anticipation.
If she could get a few more scrolls like this, she wouldn’t have to worry about lacking a proper understanding of witches.
After all, this was written by a witch herself. Surely no one would falsify information about their own kind.
“No. This one was given to me by another witch.”
“And where is she now?”
“She died a few hundred years ago.”
Scarlet Night’s voice suddenly lowered, a trace of nostalgia and sadness flickering through her violet eyes.
“Ah… sorry.”
Realizing she’d touched on a sensitive topic, Peletti quickly apologized and returned the scroll.
“It’s fine. Things like that aren’t rare among witches.”
Scarlet Night had only learned about it herself after Isabena found her—waking up to discover that many witches were gone, then being pushed by Isabena to attend some memorial service.
Not that she particularly cared.
“So… the Witch’s Banquet—was it like the state I was in when I passed out from hunger just now?”
Peletti tried to steer the conversation elsewhere, her voice softening.
Scarlet Night shook her head, droplets of water flying from her hair.
“No. Even though it’s described as being ruled by instinct, witches who’ve experienced a banquet all know that their consciousness is very clear during that time—not like you, shouting about giant chicken legs at people. That was just plain hunger.”
As she spoke, she couldn’t help but chuckle, trying to dispel the lingering gloom.
“Then is there any way to make me experience the Witch’s Banquet again?”
“I don’t know,”
Scarlet Night frowned in confusion, her little face scrunching up.
“Among all the witches I know, you’re the first one who never went through a Witch’s Banquet…”
Maybe Caroline would know something about it. Among the current witches, Caroline was one of the most knowledgeable, familiar with many things.
But right now, she was probably still hesitating. Caroline must have seen her leave the library back then—and would’ve followed her long enough to learn about her sister’s Blood Banquet.
Witches had only two taboos: the Blood Banquet and the Light element.
Her sister had both—and no means of self-protection whatsoever. Caroline’s head was probably about to explode. Better to give her some time to think things through.
As for where her sister would go next, Scarlet Night didn’t really care.
Wherever Peletti went, she would go too.
She suddenly looked up, studying Peletti seriously.
“How did you become a witch, anyway?”
“Well…”
Peletti showed a helpless expression, drawing ripples across the water with her fingers.
“It’s all because of a strange person.”
“A strange person?”
Scarlet Night tilted her head, curiosity filling her violet eyes.
“Yeah. She called herself Qingcheng…”
“Pfft—!”
Hearing that unforgettable name, Scarlet Night suddenly sprang up from the water, splashing everywhere.
Her violet eyes widened as she stared straight at Peletti, her voice trembling ever so slightly.
“What did you say? Who?”
“Qingcheng,”
Peletti replied, startled by the intense reaction.
“Now that I think about it, it’s strange—she looked exactly like me.”
Perhaps because the other party was also a witch, or because she had just saved her, Peletti trusted this clingy little girl quite a lot.
Watching Scarlet Night’s abnormal reaction, a hint of suspicion rose in her heart.
“Hey… do you know anything about that deadpan woman?”
“I don’t… I don’t know…”
Scarlet Night shook her head and sat down beside Peletti, burying her small head in Peletti’s neck to hide the blush spreading across her cheeks. Her voice was muffled, full of obvious guilt.
Peletti found it strange. Just moments ago, this little one had stubbornly refused to get off her—yet now, merely hearing the name Qingcheng made her retreat to her side?
She keenly sensed that Scarlet Night’s reaction wasn’t normal. This little one definitely knew something about Qingcheng, but for some reason didn’t want to say it.
Peletti didn’t press the issue. She simply held her gently and patted her back.
If she didn’t want to talk, there was probably some reason. Peletti wouldn’t force such a clingy little girl.
She could feel the small body in her arms trembling slightly, as if suppressing some emotion.
It was probably something unpleasant.
Meanwhile, Scarlet Night’s mind was filled entirely with thoughts of two big sisters.
If she could hug one on the left and one on the right, sleeping sandwiched between the two big sisters…
She couldn’t help but sketch out that wonderful image in her mind, the corners of her lips lifting unconsciously.
In truth, she hadn’t never considered the possibility of Qingcheng being reborn. How could something as significant as reincarnation happen to only one person? Anyone with half a brain—or even a cupcake—would know that was impossible.
She wasn’t particularly special herself—just a bit stronger than most witches. If reincarnation were real, it wouldn’t have been limited to her alone.
As for who else might have been reborn, Scarlet Night had thought carefully about it. The most likely candidate was her sister.
But when she saw Peletti starving like a walking corpse, she dismissed that idea. Her sister would never let herself get that hungry.
Only now did she understand.
Compared to their rebirths, Qingcheng was more like someone who had returned from the future to the past—perhaps even creating two versions of her sister at the same time.
But why would she do that?
She couldn’t figure it out…
Ah, whatever~
Big sister’s plans should be left to big sister. As long as she could stay by her sister’s side—whichever one—that was already more than enough.
Thinking this, Scarlet Night’s blush deepened.
“Hehe… two big sisters…”
she murmured softly, burying her face even deeper into Peletti’s neck and rubbing against it enthusiastically.
“Super satisfying!”
