Peleti felt like she had stayed in the library for a very long time, yet the sun outside the window seemed as if it would never set, hanging high in the sky.
She held several books in her hands, but not a single one was what she actually wanted. Along the way she had been chatting with Amo. From Feiye, to Qiao Suna, and by the end, she had unknowingly started talking about herself.
Amo seemed able to see through people’s hearts. Many things Peleti wanted to hide could not escape those cloudy old eyes.
At the same time, Peleti also realized that the purpose of this library was probably to collect all books related to human knowledge, without any boundary of scope.
“A Brief History of the Continent, One Hundred Ways for a Novice Beast Tamer to Tame Beasts, Postpartum Care for Livestock…”
“What I want are magic books… what the hell are you giving me?!!”
“Young people shouldn’t be so impatient,” Amo waved his hand casually. “I have all kinds of knowledge here. Everyone can take what they need.”
Amo brought Peleti back to where they had started.
From the tall counter, he took down a book and solemnly handed it to her. The book had no title, but when she opened it, inside were neatly listed various light-element spells.
“So the book I wanted was on your desk from the beginning. Then why did you take me wandering around here?” Being treated like a monkey, Peleti couldn’t help getting a little angry.
“I already told you—hardly anyone comes here all year round. You’re the only one I can actually talk to, so of course I had to chat properly.”
“Damn it,” Peleti cursed without mercy.
“Mm, not bad. You’ve got the spirit I had when I was young,” Amo nodded with a smile instead of getting angry.
Looking at Peleti, Amo gradually recalled his younger days.
Back then he really had been glorious. Now that he was old, he had nothing left.
“Actually, magic is quite complicated. Many apprentices need at least half a month to master their first spell. But with your talent, you should do even better.”
Peleti opened the book and began reading carefully.
First step: sense the surrounding light elements…
Following the instructions, Peleti raised her hand.
The surrounding light elements actively gathered into her palm, gradually emitting a grayish glow.
“Healing… doesn’t seem that difficult.”
“Mm, not bad. You’re learning quickly. But this is only the most basic healing spell—just a transitional one. Once you’re proficient, you can try deeper-level healing spells.”
Although he said that calmly, Amo couldn’t suppress the excitement in his heart.
Peleti’s elemental affinity was far higher than he had imagined.
Normally, light elements did not acknowledge humans. They strongly resisted being used. When gathering them, they would often “misbehave” and scatter. When casting magic, one small mistake could cause them to explode, forcing the caster to start again—or even injure themselves.
That was why priest apprentices had to spend huge amounts of time learning even a simple holy spell. Whether studying or practicing, they had to be extremely cautious, afraid the light elements might explode out of anger.
Most beginners held romantic fantasies about magic.
But among all elements, light elements were the most ruthless. When they exploded, they showed absolutely no mercy.
Yet in Peleti’s hands, those so-called light elements were like a group of devoted fans. Not only did they gather around her willingly, they even assisted her in casting spells.
What terrifying talent.
“Oh, are these all the light-element spells in this book? Feels like fewer than I expected.”
Peleti had originally thought that even though light magic was rare, after such a long history of development there should at least be enough spells to fill five books.
Not just… this little.
“Of course not,” Amo said.
“Then where are the other spells?”
“The others are useless. Even if you learn them, you won’t use them.”
“Then this book…” Peleti began to form a guess.
“That’s right. I wrote it,” Amo said proudly. “How is it? Much simpler than those textbooks, right?”
“May I ask… are you very strong?”
“Isn’t that obvious? How else could I become a heartthrob? Back then my magical talent crushed countless geniuses—that’s how I won the hearts of countless girls.”
Thinking about it, that made sense.
A place as important as the library would never be guarded by an ordinary old man.
Judging from his words, this old guy had once been the strongest light-element mage of his generation.
By age calculation, Peleti remembered that era was when the Church of Gluttony had just begun rising. The church needed talented people, and many powerful families were recruiting strong individuals.
Amo probably had been one of them.
Clearly, he must have refused—otherwise he wouldn’t be guarding the library here now.
No wonder he had so much relationship experience. In his youth he must really have been impressive.
“You can take this book with you,” Amo suddenly said. “It’s useless sitting here anyway.”
“You’re sure? You wrote this book yourself.”
“Of course. I keep my word. Take this too—consider it compensation for chatting with me.”
As he spoke, Amo took out a lantern.
“What is this?”
“This lantern was my weapon when I was young. It can store elements, allowing you to use light-element magic even in places where light elements are cut off. It also has another feature—it’s very hard. Looks like glass, but it’s actually harder than diamond.”
“You’re really giving this to me?”
“Of course. I don’t need it anymore. You have talent and the ability to use it well. That’s enough for me to entrust it to you.”
Peleti accepted the lantern.
She didn’t yet know whether it would be useful, but since it was a gift, there was no reason to refuse.
As the Witch of Light, situations where light elements were scarce might occur for ordinary humans—but for her, they were almost impossible.
If nothing else, according to Amo it could still be used as a very sturdy weapon.
“Then I’ll be going.”
“Wait!”
“Hm? What is it?”
“Take this with you too. It’s important!”
Amo handed her the book One Hundred Ways for a Novice Beast Tamer to Tame Beasts.
“Back then, this book inspired me to become a famous playboy. Study it well and you’ll definitely inherit my legacy.”
“Uh… I mean no offense, but… you don’t have any children, right?”
Although he kept bragging about how many girls chased him, from Peleti’s observation Amo seemed to have no descendants.
Otherwise he wouldn’t have given his weapon away just because she chatted with him for a while.
A man without even a wife… teaching her how to charm girls…
“What are you talking about?! I’ve lived this long—would I lie to you?!”
“That’s not what I meant. Looking forward to seeing you again.”
In the end, Peleti didn’t take the beast-taming book. She only carried the lantern and the magic book before pushing the door open and leaving.
“Big sister? Big sister!”
The moment she stepped outside, Feiye—who had been squatting on the ground—looked as if she had seen something unbelievable. Wiping her tears, she rushed forward and hugged Peleti.
The nearby church followers heard the commotion and rushed over.
“She’s been found! Miss Peleti has been found!”
“Huh?”
