Chapter 22: A Glimmer of Hope and a Cruel Twist

“My Lady Angel, I’ve come to rescue you.”

Lucia’s heart trembled upon hearing those words. The pent-up grievances within her surged, manifesting as tears that seeped from beneath her blindfold.

She fought to suppress any sound, biting her lip as she nodded.

The person untied Lucia’s blindfold, revealing eyes brimming with tears. Beneath the glistening moisture, her unique angelic star-like pupils were unmistakable.

Soon, Lucia’s hands were unbound as well. She rubbed away her tears, finally discerning the appearance of her rescuer.

It was a young girl, perhaps sixteen or seventeen, with neat, short sapphire-blue hair adorned by a maid’s headdress.

She wore a long black maid’s dress with a white apron, clearly one of the manor’s servants.

Lucia watched the maid untying the ropes from her legs, sniffing softly as she offered her thanks.

“Thank you.”

The maid offered no reply, quickly freeing her. Noticing the rope marks etched into Lucia’s skin, a flicker of pity crossed her eyes before she extended a hand.

“Can you stand?”

Lucia grasped the maid’s hand, using the leverage to slide off the bed. The moment her bottom left the mattress, her knees buckled, and she collapsed onto the floor.

Her legs had been bound for too long, temporarily devoid of strength.

Without a word, the maid moved close, helping Lucia to her feet. With the maid’s guidance, Lucia could just barely walk.

The two arrived at the door, peering out.

The corridor outside was unguarded, with only hanging paintings, wall lamps, and vases standing in silent vigil.

“I’ll take you out,” the maid told Lucia.

“Mm.” Lucia nodded, sniffing her reddened nose again. She was at a loss for how to thank this maid she didn’t even know. A thousand words condensed into one simple sentiment:

“You really are a good person.”

The maid seemed not to hear, leading Lucia out without hesitation.

Halfway down the corridor, footsteps echoed from ahead. As Lucia faltered, uncertain what to do, the maid deftly pulled open a nearby room door, ushering Lucia inside to successfully avoid a passing servant.

Once the servant had departed, the maid continued to hurry Lucia along. They passed the pantry, then the reception room, finally making it outdoors.

Lucia saw the sun hanging high in the sky and the still-azure heavens. Her long-held tension abruptly released, and though she hadn’t yet truly escaped, tears of profound relief welled in her eyes.

The maid observed Lucia’s expression, her heart aching for a moment before she shook her head, tightening her grip on Lucia’s small hand.

“My Lady, we still have a ways to go. You mustn’t let down your guard yet.”

Lucia wiped away her tears with her sleeve, nodding repeatedly. “Mm-hm.”

The maid led Lucia swiftly into the courtyard. There were no gardeners tending to the flowers, nor any patrolling guards. The two smoothly reached a small gate in the perimeter wall.

This small gate was one of the manor’s side entrances, rarely used, and currently locked.

The maid produced a pre-prepared key, unlocked the padlock, and pushed open the side gate. She then looked down at Lucia.

“I can only take you this far. The rest of the journey you must make on your own. I’m sorry…”

Her voice was humble, the words “I’m sorry” heavily emphasized. Lucia could hear the maid’s deep self-reproach and shame.

“No, not at all,” Lucia shook her head.

“You’ve already helped me so much.”

“Come with me. I’ll repay you.”

The maid’s face remained impassive, and she said nothing, merely shaking her head. Perhaps she had reasons for being unable to leave.

Lucia suddenly pushed up her sleeve, revealing an exquisite bracelet. It was a valuable piece of jewelry Lucia had specifically chosen during the Grand Sacrifice.

She had originally intended to sell it for money after her escape. But now, Lucia wished to express her gratitude to this unfamiliar maid.

Lucia slipped off the bracelet and pressed it into the maid’s hand.

“Thank you.”

The maid stared blankly, clutching the bracelet, biting her lip. She watched Lucia thank her, saw the genuine sincerity on the girl’s face, and witnessed her joy at newfound freedom. She couldn’t utter a word.

The maid stood rooted to the spot, watching Lucia pass through the iron gate, regaining her freedom.

‘If only I could just watch My Lady Angel leave like this, she wouldn’t be sad, would she? How wonderful that would be.’

A thought flashed through the maid’s mind. Behind her, Crowlina’s voice, laced with a smile, rang out:

“Now!”

The maid’s eyes sharpened abruptly, and she burst through the gate, chasing after Lucia.

Lucia heard footsteps behind her and turned to see the maid pursuing her. Unprepared, she stopped.

“Maid sister?”

“Whoa, what are you doing?!”

Lucia’s hands were twisted behind her back by the maid and rebound. Before she could comprehend the situation, she was subdued by the maid and dragged back into the courtyard, falling clumsily onto the grass.

Standing before her were the maid and Crowlina.

Lucia was stunned for a moment, then understood.

It must be that Crowlina had discovered the maid helping her escape, forcing the maid to recapture her.

“It has nothing to do with this maid! I ran away on my own!”

Lucia shouted at Crowlina, her first words exonerating the maid. She would take the punishment herself, unwilling to implicate her.

Crowlina, receiving Lucia’s glare and hearing her answer, paused for a moment before bursting into laughter.

“Hahahahahahahahaha… This is truly too amusing, hahahahaha…”
