Chapter 29: The Oath of the Foot-Kissing Knight

Betty Lane’s sincere words stirred Lucia, making her waver. Memories from yesterday surfaced in her mind, recalling the “maid sister” who had helped her escape.

Lucia’s gaze dimmed, and her voice grew cold.

“Please, don’t make such jokes.”

Lucia didn’t believe her. Or rather, having just learned a harsh lesson from the “maid sister,” Lucia dared not believe.

Betty Lane perceived Lucia’s hesitation and immediately swore an oath:

“By the name of Lane, I swear to you, I, Betty Lane, am your most loyal servant, your strongest shield, and your sharpest longsword. I shall devote my entire life to wielding my blade for you alone.”

Lucia furrowed her brows, utterly bewildered. As far as she knew, most commoners in this world lacked surnames; a surname was a symbol of nobility, the bedrock of their pride. Thus, nobles rarely used their surnames in oaths so readily.

Betty Lane was kneeling before the windowsill. The height difference meant her head reached only Lucia’s waist, requiring her to gaze upward to meet Lucia’s eyes.

Lucia hesitated, pressing her peach-colored lips together. She wanted to believe Betty Lane, yet she still couldn’t bring herself to trust.

Just as Lucia’s mind wandered, Betty Lane suddenly acted, grasping Lucia’s adorable small foot. She drew it close and kissed the top of Lucia’s foot.

In Valga, when knights were knighted, they would perform a hand-kissing ceremony, kissing the back of their master’s hand to express loyalty and reverence.

However, kissing the back of a master’s foot expressed absolute subservience, a complete abandonment of dignity. It was a foot-kissing ceremony performed only by slaves begging for their lives.

As Betty Lane’s slightly moist, full lips pressed against Lucia’s instep, Lucia snapped back to reality, her face exploding with color.

“You—you—you—you—you—”

“What are you doing?”

“Let go! Let go of me!”

“Quick, let go! How long are you going to keep kissing?”

Lucia, her face flushed, struggled to pull her small foot away.

But Betty Lane remained unmoved. Even when Lucia’s other foot kicked her face, she continued the foot-kissing ceremony, a full minute-long kiss. Even the most humble servant’s obeisance was no more profound.

Betty Lane finally lifted her face and looked at Lucia once more. Lucia’s face was flushed and hot, looking utterly adorable.

Betty Lane’s own face was tinged with a faint blush as she asked devoutly:

“Having witnessed my sincerity, are you now willing to believe my allegiance?”

Lucia, mortified, covered her face. Her toes curled together. She didn’t want to speak, only to quickly pull her foot back, but Betty Lane still held her small foot firmly. She couldn’t pull it away at all.

Lucia tried to kick Betty Lane with her other foot, only for it to be caught as well. Both her feet were now cradled in Betty Lane’s hands, impossible to retrieve.

Betty Lane held all the advantage, yet she still asked in that pitiful tone:

“Your Crown, will you believe my heart?”

“Ugh, let go!” Lucia mumbled through her hands, attempting to clumsily conceal her helplessness. But with even her earlobes crimson, whom could she possibly fool?

Betty Lane knew Lucia was still unwilling to acknowledge her as her Guardian Knight.

Recalling their eight years together, during which she had indeed followed the king’s orders, repeatedly restraining Lucia and instructing her, it was no wonder Lucia didn’t trust her.

Betty Lane lowered her head, her gaze dropping further. Her warm, moist breath brushed against Lucia’s instep…

Lucia’s hairs stood on end. She knew that if she didn’t agree now, Betty Lane would undoubtedly perform another strange gesture of loyalty.

“Stop!”

“I believe you!”

“Let go!”

Lucia admitted in a panic.

A look of ecstasy bloomed on Betty Lane’s face, then was quickly suppressed by noble decorum. She solemnly placed a hand on her chest and bowed her head. “Betty Lane is willing to die for you.”

Lucia finally rescued her feet, curling them up and hugging them, watching Betty Lane with a slight tremble.

She didn’t know about dying for someone; she only knew she had nearly died of embarrassment. It was too humiliating. What a world of strange customs this was.

Although Betty Lane had successfully gained Lucia’s acknowledgment and was delighted inwardly, she still felt a pang of regret for missing out on further opportunities to demonstrate her loyalty.

She had already planned out the subsequent ways to *consume*—ah, no, the *etiquette*. Your Crown, why couldn’t you have been a little more stubborn?

Betty Lane dismissed those bold thoughts and extended her hand toward Lucia again, requesting her dainty, adorable feet.

“Your Crown, these are your shoes and socks. Please give me your feet, and I shall assist you in putting them on.”

Lucia was on alert. “Put them here. Step back two meters. I’ll put them on myself.”

“As you wish.” Betty Lane felt a deep sense of pity.

After some dawdling, Lucia put on her boots, shedding her shyness. She paced the room, re-examining it as its rightful owner.

Betty Lane followed behind, watching Lucia’s back with a smile. It was as if they had returned to the past, where she was her knight, and Lucia was her angel.

No, this was no longer the past.

If Lucia wished to conceal her identity, there would no longer be an angel in the world, and the chasm between an angel and a Guardian Knight would cease to exist.

This meant she was her knight, but Lucia was more than just her angel; she could also be her princess.
