Chapter 52: The Reveal of the Angel

Lucia awoke from her coma, the first thing she saw was an old wooden ceiling.

The light was dim, the ceiling barely visible. Instinctively, Lucia turned toward the source of light and saw a window boarded up with planks.

The so-called light was nothing more than orange streaks of sunlight filtering through the cracks in the boards.

“Ugh…” Lucia groaned, holding her still-dizzy head as she slowly sat up and looked around.

This was an empty, dim room. She was sitting on a simple bed. The air smelled of rotting wood, and in the path of the light, golden dust particles danced in the air.

Everything told Lucia that this was a long-unused, neglected room.

Lucia carefully observed her surroundings until her gaze met Shally, who was staring at her like a lifeless statue.

Lucia was startled, frozen for two seconds before she reacted…

“It… it’s you…”

“You’re the Baron’s maid, right? Where is this?”

Lucia asked cautiously. She remembered being kidnapped, but the fact that she was still alive and not even tied up meant she still had value. That was her capital to remain calm in crisis.

“You’re awake,” said Shally in her maid outfit, her words sounding like a greeting.

“Mm, I’m awake. Can I… go back?”

Lucia answered politely, then asked with a sliver of hope.

“Where else would you go, Your Holiness the Angel?”

Shally’s emotionless voice pierced through Lucia’s secret. A chill ran down Lucia’s spine; if she were a cat, her fur would have stood on end.

“Wh-what are you talking about? I don’t understand,” Lucia insisted, putting on an act.

Shally didn’t argue. Instead, she extended one hand, palm open, showing Lucia the flower ornament that had fallen into her possession.

That ornament was the jewelry Lucia used to conceal her angelic starry eyes.

The ornament was in her hand. That meant I’ve been looking at her with my angel’s star eyes all along!

Lucia’s breath caught. She sat on the bed, her small hands clenched into fists, gripping her skirt, trembling slightly.

Shally silently put away the ornament, clasped her hands behind her back, and took off her maid dress, revealing the inner garment.

Lucia watched Shally’s strange behavior and the familiar inner garment, a question mark popping into her head.

Shally then removed her maid headdress, undid her neatly coiled black hair, and ran her hands through the tidy black locks, messing them into disheveled strands.

Lucia grew even more bewildered, yet Shally seemed increasingly familiar. Until Shally stood in a bright patch of light and, in front of Lucia, wiped off her heavy makeup.

Lucia finally recognized her. “It’s you! The noble lady in distress!”

Lucia saw hope again. She had saved Shally before. Now that she was in Shally’s hands, maybe she could negotiate.

Lucia试探道:

“Um, actually, we know each other.”

“You might not recognize me, but back in that village when you were in trouble, Betty and I saved you…”

“So it was you,” Shally said, her voice tinged with dejection.

“Yes, yes, it was me.”

“That’s right, the one who saved you and made you medicine was me.”

“So, you see, could you let me…”

“Why did you lie to me!!!” Shally suddenly roared, startling Lucia into stillness.

In Shally’s heart, the girl in light armor who had saved her could have been an adventurer, a mercenary, a noble, a commoner—even a criminal, she could have found a way to protect her…

But not an angel. Anything but that.

Shally bit her lip. A redness rapidly spread around her eyes, and her gaze misted over.

“Um, what’s wrong with you?” Lucia asked weakly.

Shally roughly wiped her tears with her sleeve, her reddened eyes glaring at Lucia. The look was fierce, so fierce.

Lucia shrank back. Though she didn’t understand anything, she felt she had caused a huge disaster.

“Give her back to me!” Shally shouted in rage, venting.

Though it was an unreasonable emotional outburst, at that moment Shally only wanted Lucia to compensate her for that light-armored girl.

That light-armored girl was the only one by whose side Shally could sleep peacefully in her life of hypocrisy.

The rare warmth in Shally’s decade-long cold life.

The precious light in Shally’s long darkness.

Why give her hope and then snuff it out?

Why attract her only to tell her they could never be?

Why give her a dream lover and then take her away?

“Why did you take her away!”

“Give her to me!”

“Give her back to me!!”

Shally became hysterical. Lucia, frightened, shrank back, scrambling backward on the bed.

Lucia’s evasion only provoked Shally’s ferocity. She lunged half onto the bed, grabbed Lucia’s ankle, and with mad ravings, pulled Lucia toward her.

Scary! Scary! Scary! Scary! Scary! Scary! Scary! Scary! Scary! …

Lucia’s mind was filled with fear, her body being dragged involuntarily toward the crazed Shally.

In desperation, she grabbed the bottle of ‘kicker drug’ she carried with her, shoved it into her mouth, and chugged it down.
