Chapter 49: The Allure of the Auction

Lucia teased Betty Lane about her iron will, and Betty Lane smiled in response as she drove the carriage into Potts Town.

This town was still the fief of that Baron. Betty Lane had already paid her respects, saving them a lot of troublesome formalities.

Betty Lane left the carriage at the station and took Lucia’s little hand as they stepped down.

“We’ll rest here in town for tonight.”

“Mm-hmm, I’m tired of sleeping in the carriage too,” Lucia chimed in.

Betty Lane gave her a doting smile. “There’s still time. Is there anywhere you’d like to go play?”

Lucia tapped her lips with her finger, recalling the sights she’d seen along the way. Just as she was thinking of a place to visit, she heard an operatic greeting from beside her:

“Oh, what an honor to meet you, Viscountess Betty Lane.”

The speaker was Shally. Unlike Betty Lane’s leisurely pace, she had ridden hard all the way, entering Potts Town ahead of Betty Lane and waiting there early for her arrival.

She came forward to greet them now, having disguised herself in advance. She wore a black-and-white maid dress and a maid headpiece, a completely different person from the one who had been stranded earlier.

“I am the maid of the Baron of Potts Town. His Lordship is not at the estate, so I extend his greetings on his behalf,” Shally introduced herself, crossing her hands, lifting the hem of her skirt on both sides, bowing slightly, and smiling with lowered head.

Betty Lane’s eyebrows twitched.

Well, even if the Baron himself wasn’t present, some careful nobles would arrange for trusted confidants to greet passing nobles on their behalf.

“Mm, thank you for the Baron’s concern,” Betty Lane replied with slight resignation.

“And this young miss is?” Shally’s eyes turned to Lucia, instantly comparing her appearance to the angel portrait in her mind.

Lady Angel!

Even though she had been mentally prepared, she was still stunned, and her voice trembled slightly.

Lucia had been staring at Shally’s face. Even though Shally wore heavy makeup, she looked familiar to Lucia, who had been watching her the entire journey.

Their eyes met, and both were taken aback.

Betty Lane stepped sideways in front of Lucia, blocking Shally’s view and deflecting the sensitive topic about Lucia’s identity. She said with a smile:

“We already troubled the Baron at the last town, so we won’t visit the estate. Please convey the greetings of Lane to him.”

“Y-yes,” Shally stammered, barely able to contain her shock. She lifted her skirt and hurried away.

Both sides had ended a potentially dangerous encounter. Betty Lane let out a breath and looked at the still dazed Lucia.

“What’s wrong?”

Lucia pursed her lips and whispered, “Nothing. I just thought that lady looked a bit familiar.”

Betty Lane patted Lucia’s little head, concluding this unexpected conversation.

Shally, meanwhile, slipped into an alley, using passersby as cover to secretly watch Betty Lane and Lucia.

She had found Lady Angel. That was an undeniable great achievement. She should report immediately and feel proud of this discovery.

But now, Shally’s body trembled more and more, and she was unwilling to report it.

Where was the girl in light armor who had taken care of her all the way?

Even if that girl in light armor looked exactly like Lady Angel, even if Lady Angel was now beside Betty Lane, Shally still clung to a sliver of hope.

If the news of finding the angel was reported, Betty Lane would surely be alerted, and then she would lose the clue to finding the girl in light armor.

No…

I have to find out on my own.

Shally murmured in her heart, retreated into the shadows of the alley, and disappeared into the thick darkness.

Betty Lane felt a gaze of prying eyes and turned to look. It was only a quiet alley entrance.

She saw nothing unusual and resumed joking with Lucia. They walked out of the station, and Lucia’s attention was suddenly caught by a notice on the station’s outer wall.

“That’s an auction notice,” Betty Lane explained to Lucia.

“In a small town like this, aside from the Baron himself, there are no other nobles. The auction is aimed at people with respectable jobs and passing nobles. No particularly rare items appear at the auctions held here.”

Betty Lane explained casually. She had no desire to attend such a boring auction. Besides, in Betty Lane’s heart, even the annual auction carnival in the royal capital couldn’t compare to spending time with Lucia.

“An auction!” Lucia’s eyes sparkled. The knowledge from nineteen years’ worth of countless protagonists flashed through her mind…

An auction—wasn’t that the perfect place to pick up treasures with little cost and great profit?

“I want to go to the auction!”
