“Mm, let’s go.” Betty Lane changed her mind immediately.
No matter how boring the auction, going with Lucia would make it a sweet date.
If she could also bid on some items Lucia liked as gifts, even better. Betty Lane thought, and actually grew a bit interested in the town’s auction goods.
She carefully read the auction notice, but only saw some marginal listings, nothing suitable as a gift for Lucia.
Betty Lane felt a bit disappointed and patted Lucia’s restless little head.
“The auction is tomorrow. Let’s do something else first.”
“Mm-hmm.” Lucia was also reading the notice seriously. Though she had forgotten many memories, luckily she still remembered the written knowledge of this world, so she wasn’t illiterate.
By the time Lucia finished reading the notice haltingly, a waiter had already arrived, asking if they wanted lunch at the inn.
Betty Lane looked at Lucia. Lucia agreed, so she paid for both their meals, and under the waiter’s guidance, they entered the inn’s dining hall.
It was a spacious hall, with a long table formed by nine small tables pushed together in the middle, covered with a large white cloth. The waiters had already begun serving.
Generally, the main course at an inn depended on local produce and the chef’s mood. Special main courses were only provided when nobles booked in advance.
“Dear sir and miss, even so, we can still offer delicious main courses and custom side dishes.”
“Mm, the custom part refers to dishes other than the main course, little miss.”
The waiter explained kindly to Lucia, clearly her appearance had a way with people.
The waiter handed menus to Betty Lane and Lucia. As Lucia ordered, the waiter introduced the main course. At the other end of the hall, a group burst into laughter:
“Oh haha, look, fellas! Today we get to taste what the nobles eat!”
“I’ve been wanting to come here.”
“Haha, eat all you want. After we sell the goods tomorrow, we’ll be rolling in it!”
Betty Lane and Lucia both frowned at the noisy commotion and looked over at the boisterous diners.
The waiter gave Betty Lane an apologetic smile.
“I’m sorry, Viscount. Nobles don’t often come to this inn, but we have to prepare lunch every day. So the dining hall is also open to respectable folk.”
Betty Lane glanced sideways at the group. They were all dressed like mercenaries—unkempt appearances, and one even had a s*ave on a leash.
Among them, a bald mercenary said to the s*ave, “Today you’ll eat well. Tomorrow at the auction, perk up and fetch me a good price.”
The s*ave remained silent. Seduced by the aroma, her throat bobbed, but she only stared at the floor, not daring to look at the dishes on the table.
The s*ave’s timid appearance struck the mercenaries as funny. They guffawed and spewed dirty jokes, growing more and more obscene.
Betty Lane didn’t want Lucia to hear those obscene jokes. She glanced instinctively at Lucia and asked the waiter:
“Are these the ‘respectable folk’ you mentioned?”
The waiter nodded. “They can afford the meal.”
Betty Lane’s temple twitched. In a bad mood, she was about to snap when her hand was gently held.
She looked down and saw Lucia holding her hand, nodding at her.
“Hah…” Betty Lane let out a breath. Since Lucia agreed, she would not trouble the waiter.
They sat at a small table. The appetizers they ordered were brought, and they began to eat. The waiter moved between the long table and the small table, fetching dishes for the guests.
Only two tables in the hall were occupied, separated by several seats. No matter how the mercenaries sprayed spit while eating, Lucia deliberately ignored them, and both sides peacefully coexisted.
“Look! This is the suckling pig-chicken that only nobles eat!”
The main course was a suckling pig-chicken—roasted by combining the lower half of a capon with the upper half of a piglet. The pig’s snout still held a whole apple.
“Hey, doesn’t this suckling pig-chicken look like you?” The mercenary’s remark caught Lucia’s attention.
Unable to suppress her curiosity, Lucia looked for the first time at those fierce-looking men.
The bald mercenary yanked the chain attached to the s*ave’s collar. The s*ave stumbled and knelt before his seat.
She was a female s*ave, dressed in a gray single skirt, with dark golden curly hair. Among the curls were two large, drooping ears like those of a golden retriever.
Only then did Lucia realize—the s*ave was a beast-eared girl.
