Chapter 5: The Guardian Knight’s Suspicions

As the Angel’s Guardian Knight, Betty Lane had always been devoted to her duties.

She hailed from a collateral branch of the royal family, sharing a bloodline within five generations of the current King of Varga.

However, the royal family’s penchant for extensive procreation meant she inherited little wealth as a distant relative.

At fourteen, driven by a desire for status, she donned a noble’s empty title and personally ventured onto the battlefield.

Her elder brother, a year her senior, accompanied her to war.

Together, they braved countless hardships, fighting for seven years and earning remarkable merit.

Yet, just as they were about to return to the royal capital for their enfeoffment, her brother fell to a stray arrow in the final battle.

After the war, Betty Lane returned to the royal capital, was granted the title of Viscount, and bid farewell to the battlefield.

Disoriented by grief, she spent her days drinking in the imperial estate, living like a shadow of her former self.

Just as she believed she would remain in this颓废 state indefinitely, the King chose her, appointing her as the Angel’s Guardian Knight.

She still remembered the first time she saw the rumored Angel.

The tiny Angel lay weakly on the bed, their long, snow-white hair fanning out around them.

One glance into those clear eyes was enough to captivate Betty Lane completely.

Although the Angel was just a small creature, freshly awakened from a crystal, they couldn’t even reach Betty Lane’s navel when standing on tiptoe with arms outstretched.

Nevertheless, Betty Lane resolved to protect this adorable little Angel.

Indeed, thanks to her role as Guardian Knight, Betty Lane emerged from the sorrow of losing her brother and regained her resolve.

Eight years swiftly passed, and the tiny Angel had grown a little, though still far from becoming a “grand” Angel.

A faint smile played on Betty Lane’s lips as she approached the sacred palanquin.

Inside the palanquin, Lucia was consumed by anxiety, her body trembling slightly as she suppressed her panic.

In her previous life, Lucia had suffered from mild social anxiety.

The bravest thing she had ever done was probably giving a speech in front of seven new colleagues, her legs shaking the entire time.

She had spent the whole morning contemplating escape, and now, realizing she was about to be observed by hundreds, if not thousands, of people outside the carriage, her uncooperative legs began to tremble once more.

And, just now, did that Guardian Knight glare at me?

‘Did she see through me?’

‘As a close bodyguard who has been by the Angel’s side for years, the Guardian Knight might very well detect my abnormality!’

‘If she discovers that I’m a strange soul occupying the Angel’s body, will she brand me a demon and burn me at the stake?’

Lucia’s heart pounded with fright, terrifying herself.

The curtain of the carriage window was suddenly pulled aside, and the face of Betty Lane, the Guardian Knight, filled the small opening.

Her face was backlit, making her orange eyes particularly sharp as they peered into the window, fixing on Lucia.

*Thump!*

Lucia startled, sitting bolt upright.

She instinctively turned her face away, not daring to meet Betty Lane’s gaze.

“My Lady Angel, do you require anything?” Betty Lane’s voice, a rich, magnetic female tone, drifted into the carriage.

Simply hearing Betty Lane’s voice, Lucia subconsciously conjured an image of her appearance and figure in her mind.

She sounded like a dominant woman—tall, with a generous bust and long legs.

‘What am I thinking about!?’

Lucia grew even more flustered, swallowing hard and daring not to speak.

Betty Lane gave an understanding look, her gaze sweeping the carriage for a moment.

Finding nothing suspicious, and with the procession currently parading through the streets, she couldn’t very well get in to inspect.

She leaned her head in, her red lips almost touching Lucia’s ear, her breath caressing Lucia’s cheek.

The sensation made Lucia itch, yet she dared not move.

Lucia maintained her stiff posture, passively listening as Betty Lane whispered in her ear:

“Little one, you’ve been exposed.”

*Thump!!!* Lucia’s heart lurched, and her breathing hitched.

“Behave yourself throughout the grand ceremony, and no unnecessary movements before we return to the palace.”

Having delivered her warning, Betty Lane lowered the curtain and rode her horse back to her position.

As the Angel’s Guardian Knight, she had watched the Angel grow up.

She knew the Angel was a mischievous little girl, full of initiative, daring to think and act.

The Angel once spent half a month memorizing the guards’ patrol routes to plot a nighttime tower climb, only to be caught by her.

They had also once jumped into a dry well to explore a supposed underground labyrinth, only to be caught by her.

They had even conducted unauthorized magic experiments, nearly burning down the library, only to be caught by her.

In short, the Angel was never a quiet girl; she possessed a lively and interesting mind.

Normally, within the royal palace, Betty Lane would indulge the Angel’s antics with the mindset of teasing her own little sister.

As long as no major incidents occurred, she would watch from the shadows, amused.

But today was the Grand Ceremony, a matter concerning the royal family’s prestige, so this troublesome little Angel could not be allowed to cause any trouble.

Betty Lane had just glanced into the carriage.

Although she hadn’t seen anything suspicious, she had noticed that the Angel seemed particularly guilty today.

That was why she had said Lucia was exposed, hoping to bluff her into behaving.

Lucia, however, was utterly terrified.

She clutched her head in the carriage, trembling uncontrollably, her mind filled with images of herself being led to the stake.

‘I’ve been discovered!’

‘It’s over!’

‘She’ll arrest me as soon as we return to the palace!’

‘It’s over! It’s over!’

‘Calm down, calm down…’

‘I cannot return to the palace, absolutely not!’

‘We’re currently parading through the streets; they wouldn’t dare do anything to me now.

‘I must seize this opportunity to escape; returning to the palace means utter doom!’

Lucia desperately tried to calm herself, patting her cheeks to regain her composure.

The palanquin swayed, then stopped.

They had arrived.
