Chapter 18: A Close Call

“Close call, really. We were a split second away from game over.” Bai Ye appeared in an abandoned building with Bai Muxue and Lan.

“Mmmph!” Lan struggled violently in Bai Muxue’s arms. Something was stuffed in her mouth, making it impossible for her to even open it.

Just before, when Lan had nearly bitten Bai Muxue, Bai Ye had used magic to silence her.

“You can talk now.” Bai Ye snapped her fingers, and the thing in Lan’s mouth disappeared.

“You… you’re despicable! Taking advantage of someone in a tight spot!” Lan gritted her teeth, glaring at Bai Ye. “Especially you!”

“Heh, you got that right.” Bai Ye walked over to Lan and bent down. “But… my dear Miss Lan, can you take a look at the situation right now? We’re the ones who caught you.”

“Oh, right. I also took that little gadget off you.” Bai Ye extended her right hand, and on her palm lay the communicator designed for magical girls.

“If I were you, I wouldn’t say beg for mercy or anything, but I’d at least keep quiet for a bit.”

“Go ahead and kill me if you can. Come on!” Lan closed her eyes and bared her neck, looking like she was offering herself for execution.

“Why do you always talk about dying? We never said we were going to kill you…” Bai Muxue said close to Lan’s ear.

“Hey, talking to her like that won’t work. Why not just push her down like last time?” Bai Ye suggested.

“…I think if you have nothing useful to say, you could just not say it.” Bai Muxue was stunned for a moment before replying.

“Don’t look like you’re ready to die. We really aren’t going to kill you.” Bai Muxue patted Lan’s cheek again.

“Even so, you definitely wouldn’t do anything good.” Lan opened her eyes and met Bai Muxue’s gaze.

“Heh, you’re right about that too.” Bai Ye nodded. “Actually, I’ve always had this idea: to shoot some defeat CG of magical girls or something.”

“Miss Lan, would you be interested in becoming the first magical girl to get a CG?”

At the words “defeat CG” from Bai Ye, Lan couldn’t help thinking of the kind of not-suitable-for-children stuff she’d seen before. Her cheeks flushed instantly.

“Why are you so inappropriate…” Bai Muxue muttered on the side.

“Just kidding.” Bai Ye waved her hand. “And even if I really wanted to shoot, we don’t have the tools for it right now. There’s no way.”

Bai Muxue’s phone had exploded yesterday, and she hadn’t had time to buy a new one today.

“So it looks like that plan is off the table.” Bai Ye smiled. “In that case…”

Bai Ye suddenly reached out toward Lan.

Lan seemed to have already seen her fate. She closed her eyes, her body trembling slightly in fear.

She had heard of many magical girls being captured and killed by witches. The casualty rate for magical girls fighting witches was also the highest.

‘Was she going to…’

After waiting for a long time, Lan didn’t feel any pain. She opened her eyes and found that the restraints on her had been undone. Bai Muxue, who had been holding her, also stepped back a few feet.

“What kind of trick are you two plotting now?”

Lan instinctively assumed that Bai Ye and Bai Muxue had some sinister plan. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have let her go so easily.

“That sounds so harsh. Why can’t I just take pity on you and let you off?” Bai Ye clutched her chest, pretending to look sad.

“Alright, alright, hurry up and go. If you don’t leave now, I might change my mind in a bit, and then you won’t be able to run even if you want to.”

“…I’ll be back!” Lan left those words behind and turned to walk away.

“Sigh, I told you, you’re too soft-hearted. Something will happen sooner or later.” Bai Ye turned to Bai Muxue.

Given Bai Ye’s personality, she definitely wouldn’t have let Lan go so easily.

Even if she didn’t go as far as shooting defeat CG, she would still have humiliated Lan thoroughly.

It was because Bai Muxue had just used telepathy to persuade Bai Ye to let Lan go that she did so.

“The emotional power we collected from Lian this time should be enough, right? No need to bother with Ye Li again.” Bai Muxue replied.

“Fine, you’re right.” Bai Ye agreed.

The stronger the magical girl, the stronger her emotional power.

When Lian had been flustered and hesitant, Bai Ye had collected a large amount of emotional power, enough to replenish the magic she’d spent this time, with some to spare.

“I’ll lend you the weapon Lueying for now. I’m still weak right now, so I can’t directly help you like this every time.”

“I understand.” Bai Muxue nodded.

“One more thing. You really should learn how to fight. This time, your strength was a bit higher than Ye Li’s, but in the end, you lost.”

“The main reason is that you haven’t been through a real fight yet. Your combat experience isn’t as good as hers. If I hadn’t helped, you really would have been captured.”

“Fine, fine, I got it. You can stop talking.” Bai Muxue canceled her transformation and walked out of the abandoned building.

“Aren’t you going to take her communicator?” Bai Ye asked.

“…Are you actually stupid or just pretending to be? Generally speaking, things like that have trackers, right? If we kept it, we’d be caught in no time.”

“True.” Bai Ye thought about it. That made sense.

The abandoned building wasn’t far from the alley where they had fought. Bai Ye didn’t have enough magic to carry all three of them a long distance away.

“What’s that?” Just as Bai Muxue was about to head home along this road, she noticed someone standing at the entrance of the alley.

The person had long silver-gray hair, and it didn’t look dyed.

Shi Lu stood at the alley entrance, extending her hand to feel the residual magic inside.

‘It’s very similar to the dark magic of the Eternal Night Witch, but I can’t just conclude that this is the Eternal Night Witch on the run.’

‘Two similar magic signatures… There are two witches? Since when did Changfeng City have two new witches? And both use dark magic.’

‘No new leads for now.’

Shi Lu was about to leave.

She had been searching for traces of the Eternal Night Witch these past few days, but the other party was really good at hiding.

Shi Lu wasn’t in a rush. She knew this wasn’t something that could be resolved in a day or two.

Out of the corner of her eye, Shi Lu noticed Bai Muxue standing not far away, and she was walking this way.

‘White hair, red eyes…?’ Shi Lu looked at Bai Muxue and suddenly remembered that the Eternal Night Witch’s features were also white hair and red eyes.

Shi Lu thought Bai Muxue was very likely related to the Eternal Night Witch, or even the Eternal Night Witch in disguise.

She didn’t sense any witch magic on Bai Muxue, but the Eternal Night Witch’s disguise was also very strong. That alone couldn’t clear Bai Muxue of suspicion.

“Huh?” Bai Muxue saw that the other person suddenly looked over this way.

‘Could it be… that she’d been noticed?’
